What is a Vitamin?
Vitamins are organic substances that are essential to the body (essential = cannot be produced by the body)
“Vitamin” comes from the latin word vita/life
Every human being needs vitamins in limited amounts to sustain body health
They do not provide energy or help building units
Vitamin A
Needed for: new cell growth, healthy skin, hair and tissues, vision in dim light, immune function
Found in: egg yolk, milk or fish-liver oils, dark vegetables
Suggested daily intake: 600 µg (micro grams)
Vitamin B1(Thiamin)
Needed for: production of energy from carbohydrates and fats
Found in: nearly all foods
Suggested daily intake: 1,4 mg
Vitamin C
Needed for: immune-stimulation, iron absorbtion, wound healing, anti allergies, teeth and gum health, eye health
Found in: oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, cantaloupes, mangoes, papayas, and their juices, bean sprouts, green peppers, broccoli
Suggested daily intake: 75 mg
Vitamin D
Needed for: absorption of calcium and phosphate, healthy bones and teeth
Found in: milk, cheese, whole eggs, liver, salmon
Suggested daily intake: 5 µg (micro grams)
Symptoms and Illnesses
A low Vitamin A intake can cause skin and tissue problems.
A to low or to high intake of Vitamin B1 has not been observed to cause any toxic results.
A low Vitamin C intake can cause health problems with teeth and gum. (Scurvy)
A low Vitamin D intake can cause problems with your bones
Vitamin Pills (Yes/No)
Good: help substain healthy diet e.g. sick people or people with allergies
Bad: not natural, many chemicals
