Redesign a line of deli meats and products to expand any current or fictitious deli of your choice. Strengthen the brand identity through cohesive packaging that speaks to a specific target audience. The materials used should be both
reusable and recyclable.
S O L U T I O N _
I chose to redesign Manny’s Deli in Chicago. I was inspired by the deli ’s delivery truck that circled the neighborhood in the 1940’s in the deli ’s first years. By pulling elements from the delivery truck such as license plate, tire tread and other automotive details I was able to create patterns, graphics and an identity that captures the deli ’s original neighborhood spirit. These elements were applied to deli meats, cheeses, poultry, sandwiches, olives, jellies, honey, spices, coffee and home-made pastas.

Glass in mid-century modern architecture.
B R I E F _
Create a poster series for an architecture themed conference, event, tribute or lecture series. Describe three main topics to be discussed or featured, one topic for each poster. Create your own type for the main image of each poster. The topic should be conceptual and allow for broad discussions.
S O L U T I O N _
Inspired by mid-century modern architecture I chose to focus on one element in this type of architecture: glass. The main topics of the posters are geometry, transparent, and reflection. Each of these elements comes from the use of glass in mid-century architecture. Simple and modern typography was used for the secondary information to support the main type in the posters.

Water from the grounds of the Palace of Versailles.
B R I E F _
Create a bottled water line or rebrand an existing line. Design two sizes of bottles, large and small, and package a six pack along with their carrier.
S O L U T I O N _
Influenced by the royalty of the Palace of Versailles, I decided to create a new brand of water that is bottled on the grounds of the royal château. The brand Versailles is a modern day interpretation of the ornamentation and elaborate details found in the palace. I custom made the carrier that is inspired by Marie Antoinette enjoying an afternoon picnic in her garden.

Self-discovery in the films of Cameron Crowe.
B R I E F _
Design a film festival honoring the films of a director of your choice. Identify a common thread that connects and runs through the director’s f i lms. Create l imited edition del iverables based on that thread, including a poster, catalog book, DVD packaging, tickets, schedule, album and a container to hold everything.
S O L U T I O N _
I chose the light-hearted director Cameron Crowe. His films capture a nostalgic feeling of growing up and falling in love. The photography, typography and materials used work together to portray the self- discovery one goes through during the coming of age in adolescence.

Humans and animals living together in perfect harmony.
B R I E F _
Define, research and explore a current social topic in the United States. Based on the chosen topic, explore it through design throughout the 15 week semester with a variety of projects including posters, packaging and a final book. Create design solutions that will help solve the chosen social problem.
S O L U T I O N _
I chose to explore the relationship between humans and animals in captivity. Researching both the negative and positive effects animals in captivity have on both animals and humans, it was revealed how vital of a relationship there is between the two. It is a never ending relationship and we rely on each other to survive. The main goal of the book is to make people aware, understand the importance and how to act responsibly on it.

A reflection is made up of many different layers
B R I E F _
Explore an abstract topic and use the process as the material. Combine the process in order to create a final book.
S O L U T I O N _
I chose the topic of ref lection, and the many facets of the word. Everything in my process book was in a stream of consciouness while stil l maintaining the idea of ref lection. Collages, photography and writing were all combined into a final printed and bound book.

FEELING
The most magical place on earth.
B R I E F _
Create an iPad brochure with a strong personal and conceptual context, about a place that you are particularly drawn to. Describe ideas, emotions, metaphors and senses with the blending of image and type.
S O L U T I O N _
I chose Bolinas, California, a magical little sea town that is weary of outsiders coming in and ruining their treasured place. Using my own hand rendered type along with vintage style photography and hand drawn graphics, the reader feels how special of a place it is, along with the sense of quietness. The quietness was achieved by having plenty of open space for the eye to rest. Rhythm was used in the typography to portray the daily life in this small coastal sea town.

Teaching kids cultural diversity through geography.
1 4 7
B R i e F _
Create educational materials that help teach kids cultural diversity through geography. These materials are for first and second graders and focus on the topics of homes, meals, jobs and types of transportation.
s O L U t i O n _
I wanted to create useful materials for teachers and parents to use both in the classroom and at home, but I also wanted the materials to be fun and visually appealing. In my research I found most of the materials that exist already are biographical by individual country and culture. No books exist where comparisons of cultures are shown. This was something I chose to focus in order for children to make direct visual comparisons to spot the similarities and differences in culture.
