Mind map: diagram used to visually outline and connect information, with related concepts radiating outward from a core, central word or image. Popularized by Tony Buzan in the 1970s.
Graphic recording: documenting a conversation, meeting, or presentation in real time in words and images. Can be done live or virtually, on large paper, whiteboard, or digitally.
Graphic facilitation: integrating facilitation and interactive visual practices to facilitate group process.
Sketchnotes: Taking personal notes using images as well as words.
Gamestorming: the use of interactive games for group work including ideation, strategic planning, design, problem solving. See book of the same name by Dave Gray et al.
Kinesthetic modeling: a hands-on method for creative problem-solving created by John Ward. Individuals or groups silently make three-dimensional models out of modeling dough, popsicle sticks, random objects, etc.
Template, graphic template: a pre-drawn template, designed for a particular type of group process such as strategic planning or visioning, which is filled in during the group session.
THINGS TO TRY…THINGS TO TRY…THINGS TO TRY…THINGS TO TRY…
• Get an inexpensive sketchbook and pens that you like. Carry them with you and doodle or sketchnote while you’re at meetings or presentations.
• Try mindmapping next time you need to plan a presentation, make a to-do list, or take notes on a book.
• Put a whiteboard or flipchart in your office where you can write on it easily and often!
• Put butcher paper on a wall, or paint a wall with whiteboard or chalkboard paint.
• Read one of the books on the resource list.
• Get friendly with sticky notes!
• Try using one of the attached templates in one of your meetings.
• Take a workshop in one of the methods we’ve played with today.
• Bring a visual practitioner into your workplace – to train your staff, or document one of your meetings.
• Put play-doh or “fiddles” out on the tables during meetings.
• Try giving a presentation using a whiteboard or flipchart instead of PowerPoint.
