Through the iPad (and iPhone) our user will be able to take high-resolution video clips of from zero to 12 seconds long. The set in which these clips appear can be defined either before or after recording. If no set is defined, a new set will be created for each session. These clips are square in aspect ratio (1080 pixels on a side) in order to more easily compare and contrast, and to avoid the narrative connotations of popular video formats. Any new clips automatically appear in the locate/organize screen. (In later iterations we will include Standard and 16:9 film ratios by adding a ‘soft matte’ to the clips in the organization screen.

This screen state is divided between locating and organizing video clips and sets of clips. For the iPad, the left portion of the screen is devoted to discovery. Clips and sets appear in a list that is both graphic and textual. They can be sorted by date, location, time, tag or set. They can be filtered by similar criteria, or search terms can be entered for specific sorting. On the right hand side of the screen, clips or sets can be organized spacially in a grid. Because all clips are the same size and shape, the grid is uniform. Clips can be dragged into different sets, and reorganized in 2-D grid space. This is the primary use screen.

Video clips (or sets of clips) can be viewed at full resolution. From this state, clips or sets can be posted to various sites or emailed. When sets are posted, they appear as a single extended clip.

1: SHOOT VIDEO

At the top of the iPad screen are the tabs labeled ‘SHOOT’ and ‘ORGANIZE’, which alternate between the two primary screen states. In this illustration, SHOOT has been selected.

Below these tabs are two boxes. The leftmost box displays the name of the set in which any new shot will appear. By pressing and holding a finger to this box, a standard input screen will appear and the set name may be changed (see page 1C). This will create a new set. The box to the right of this displays the current state of the program. As depicted, it is shooting the first clip of a new set.

2: SEARCH BOX

In the SHOOTING STATE (which is depicted), the search box can be used to find clips or sets that have been created during the same day’s shooting. They will appear in the scrollable area beneath the ‘SETS’ and ‘CLIPS’ tabs.

Beneath the search box are buttons that allow for sorting and filtering of the clips or sets shot that day. ‘SEE ALL’, will place all clips and sets from the most recent shoot in the area below. By using ‘START TIME’ and ‘STOP TIME’, the user can filter out only clips that have been shot within a time period on the day of the shoot (see page 1D). By using ‘GEO’, a modal pane will appear with a map that can be used to filter out clips shot within a certain vicinity (see page 1E).

The ‘SETS’ and ‘CLIPS’ tabs determine whether clips or sets (collections of clips) are shown in the scrollable area beneath. Double tapping a clip in this scrollable area will make it appear in the central square for viewing or basic editing and annotation (see page 4A).

As a clip is being shot, it will appear at the top of this scrollable area, pushing down all previous clips.

The white balance button can be used at any time when the iPad is not shooting to white balance the video camera.

Beneath this button is the erase button. Any clip appearing in the central area can be erased. A modal window appears, asking the user for confirmation.

Beneath this button is the post button, which will open a modal window that will allow the user to post the current clip to existing social sites such as YouTube or Twitter.

Beneath the post button is the annotate button. Pressing this, will ‘flip’ the current clip to the ‘back’ where notes, tags, and other information can be added (see page 2A). In the preferences pane, this can be set to occur after every shot.

Beneath this button is the shooting area, designed to be pressed by the thumb of the user. In the preferences area, this can be set to shoot only while pressed, by turning the camera on and off in the traditional manner, or to automatically trigger a shot of specific length. For left handed users, the entire interface can be reversed left-to-right in the preferences area.

1: TIME FILTERING

Clicking the ‘START TIME’ or ‘STOP TIME’ buttons will open a filtering window with which users can filter out only the clips taken within a given time frame, or with particular tags.

When in SHOOT mode, this filtering will be based on hours of the given day and in ORGANIZE mode, this filtering will include calendar based filtering.

1: GEOLOCATING A SET OF CLIPS

Clicking the ‘GEO’ button above the Sets and Clips tabs will open up the current set in Google Maps, with each of the clips depicted by a marker.

Rolling over a marker will open a popup window showing that particular clip. Clicking on the marker causes that clip to open in PLAY mode (see page 4A).

By tapping the screen and dragging, the user may create a selection window around groups of clips and then they will appear in the scrollable area beneath the sets and clips tabs.

Tapping the ‘GEO’ button again will return the program to its previous state. Tapping the ‘Press to Shoot Video’ button will return the program to its shooting state.

Check the geotag for exact location. We stumbled on these steps while looking for the railroad location. Light hits the cement very nicely at early sunset. Kind of wonder if we are allowed to shoot without a permit since it is technically private property. The owner is totally cool with us using his lot as long as we buy him some booze. He says it’s his lot anyway, so I say we go with it.

1: CLIP SCROLLING AREA

When a shot is completed, it appears at the top of the clip scrolling area, pushing the previous clips down in the sequence. The image displayed is the first frame of the shot. This can be changed in the edit mode (see page 2C).

2: ANNOTATION AREA (BACK OF CLIP)

When ‘annotate last clip’ button is pressed, or the ‘notes’ link on the front of the clip is pressed, the clip graphically flips, to display the annotation area. At the top left is the ‘clip’ link which will return to the ‘front’ of the clip. To the right of this area is the number of the clip, in this set. Numbers increase sequentially.

To the right again is the date and time of the clip, which is filled in automatically. To the right of this, is the ‘GEO’ button. When pressed, the annotation area will display a map (Google), and an icon showing where this clip was shot (see page 2B).

Beneath the top bar of the annotation area, is the title of the clip, which the user may enter or leave blank. Holding a finger to this area will open the titling box for text entry (similar to page 1C).

Beneath this area is the annotation box. Holding a finger on the annotation box will open it for text entry or editing.

Beneath this box is the ‘TAGS’ area, in which the user may enter tags to aid in locating the video swatch at a later date.

3: RETURN TO SHOOTING

While in annotation mode, the shooting button, when pressed, will return the program to its shooting state (see page 1A).

1: GEOTAGGED LOCATION OF CLIP

When the ‘GEO’ link at the upper right of the clip is tapped, the central area will be replaced by a Google Maps depiction of the area where the clip was shot, with a marker pointing out the location of the clip.

Tapping the same area (now labled ‘NOTES’) will return the clip to its Annotation State (see page 2A).

Tapping the upper left area of the clip, labeled ‘CLIP’, will return the clip to the ‘PLAY’ state (see page 4A).

Tapping the ‘EDIT’ button on the bottom left of the clip will open the clip in EDIT mode (see page 2C).

To the left and below the ‘NOTES’ button is the ‘VOLUME’ control for the clip.

2 COLOR CORRECTION SLIDERS

A pair of sliders control the color correction for the clip and the brightness.

Beneath them is the ‘ERASE’ button, which when pressed will request a confirmation in order to erase this clip. Beneath that button is the ‘CHOOSE COVER IMAGE’ button, which will select the image that represents the clip, based on what image is currently displayed. Below that is the ‘REPEAT’ button, which will cause the clip to play continuously while editing takes place.

3 IN AND OUT POINTS

At the bottom of the clip is a slider. The left portion of it controls when the clip begins, and the right portion controls the end of the clip. In between is the play head. The entire clip is always present, so any edits are reverseable.

To the left of the in and out slider is the ‘DONE’ button which will return the clip to its normal ‘PLAY’ mode.

Beneath the in and out slider is the ‘CONTRAST’ slider, which controls the contrast of the clip.

1: ORGANIZE VIDEO

Selecting the ‘ORGANIZE’ tab, switches to the organization state of the program. To the far left and below, we see the same sorting and filtering buttons as in the ‘SHOOTING’ state, however the middle buttons are now labeled, ‘START DATE’ and ‘STOP DATE’, because they will filter out clips or sets based on a day range rather than a time period (of one day)

Beneath this, is the scrollable sorting area, where we see the sets that have been shot, in reverse chronological order. After a period of shooting, the most recent set will appear at the top of the scrollable area, and that set will be displayed in the central, organization pane, as shown.

2: ORGANIZATION PANE

Here we see the most recent set of video swatches on a 2-dimensional grid. The clips can be dragged and repositioned as desired. Each of the clips shows the first frame as its primary image, although this can be changed in the ‘EDIT’ mode (See page 2C). In addition, each clip contains a ‘NOTES’ button, which will open up the clip in the central pane in its ‘ANNOTATION’ state. To the right of the ‘NOTES’ button is the title, which is abbreviated. Touching the title will open up the full title, which will extend beyond the frame of the clip, if needed.

The clip can be repositioned to another area of the grid by touching, holding and then dragging. Double tapping the clip will open it up in the primary viewing area, in ‘PLAY’ mode (see page 4A).

Finally, in the bottom left corner of each clip is the ‘EDIT’ button, which will open the clip in video editing mode, in the center of the viewing pane (See page 2C).

3: ARTBOARD

By touching and dragging a blank area of the artboard, the user may reposition the entire area as a unit. The artboard in its entirety is about ten times larger than the viewing area, and so very large conglomerations of clips may be arranged here.

By pinching or spreading, the user may enlarge or shrink the artboard in order to see more or less of it. Double tapping the artboard will return it to its standard magnification, which is shown in this illustration.

1 SET ORGANIZATION TAB

Tapping or sliding the ‘SETS TAB’ will subdivide the central screen into two areas. The area to the left is an organizational area for the graphic organization of sets. The area to the right is the same clip organizational artboard that has been described. The currently selected set will appear as a graphic object on the left portion of the screen. In much the same way as a clip, this representation of the set can be annotated, titled, and edited. When editing a set, the entire set will behave as if it were one giant clip.

Shown above the example ‘SET 1’ are two buttons which will clear the set area completely, or create a new empty set.

2 SET ARTBOARD

Sets may be dragged from the scrollable bar on the left onto the set organizational artboard. Once multiple sets are on the artboard, tapping a set will switch out the clips that are represented on the right hand portion of the screen. The clips represented will be all the clips that compose a selected set.

3 MOVING CLIPS TO DIFFERENT SETS

By dragging a clip from the right hand portion of the screen onto the graphic image of a set from the left hand portion of the screen, a user may transfer clips from one set to another. Dragging and releasing a clip into a blank portion of the Set Organization artboard will duplicate the clip, so that one clip may be added to multiple sets.

1: PLAYING VIDEO (ORGANIZE SCREEN)

If double tapped, a clip will enlarge to full size and begin playing, once it is done playing, the ‘NOTES’, ‘TITLE’ and ‘EDIT’ areas will appear. If the clip is single tapped, those buttons will temporarily disappear as the clip plays again. If the clip is once again double tapped, it will return to its place on the artboard.

‘NOTES’ will graphically flip the clip to its ‘ANNOTATE’ state (see page 2A).

‘EDIT’ will open the clip in its ‘EDIT’ state (See next 2C).

Tripple tapping either a clip or a set will cause that item to take over the screen completely and to play on repeat until the screen is again tapped.
