An Occasion For The Arts 2017 • 3
Last year’s An Occasion was our longest and most diverse ever. We added culinary and literary arts to “our favorite weekend” and have continued to expand in 2017. We are pleased this year’s show boasts a stellar lineup of visual and performing artists for you to engage with in their booths and on their stages.
A hearty welcome to our artists who have traveled from across North America to be with us. We are thrilled to have The Williamsburg Symphony performing “Symphony at the Movies” concerts at Kimball Theater four times this weekend. Our partnership with other non-profits CultureFixVA & Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center, local institutions Colonial Williamsburg & William and Mary and businesses The Merchant Square Association and The Blue Talon Bistro directly contribute to the many offerings of An Occasion 2017.
This festival is about art, community and partnership. We believe art is liberating and inspiring. We hope you are lifted through your time with us. We have free and creative activities for all ages and ranging from visual to culinary to literary arts — participate in them all!
We believe partnership enables and strengthens. An Occasion for the Arts would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, led by our presenting sponsor Bank of America and Merrill Lynch - Mattheisen & Beers, whose vision and commitment to this community we applaud. The generous support of The Williamsburg Area Arts Commission and many local businesses and individuals make the show possible.
As you plan and enjoy your trip to An Occasion for the Arts, we hope you feel inspired, engaged, and strengthened. And of course, purchase unique pieces from our artists that you will enjoy the year round! Welcome and enjoy the show!

8 • An Occasion For The Arts 2017
AN OCCASION FOR THE ARTS is a 501c3 non-profit organization, founded in 1969 to give the Williamsburg area a grand and inspiring arts experience. Since then it has grown, year by year, to become the area’s premier art and music festival. With additional support from sponsors, the City of Williamsburg, the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance and the Williamsburg Area Arts Commission, we have been able to expand our program this year. See page 5 for information on many of our new events.
We are also now able to provide an endowment to the Williamsburg Community Foundation in order to assure continued support of young artists in our area. If you would like to help us sustain quality art in Williamsburg, join us as a volunteer or as a Friend. An on-line donation form can be found at aofta.org

Within the Artist’s Village that stretches along a three-block area of Merchants Square, you’ll find a spectacular range of art in 14 diverse mediums from ceramics to painting, and from the traditional to the whimsical. One of the best things about An Occasion for the Arts is the rare opportunity to speak personally with the artists who have come from afar. Imagine the years of training and hours of patient labor that went into each of their creations. You will come away with a memorable story as well as the purchase of a fine piece of art to enjoy for many years to come.
Because choosing a few pieces of art from so many possibilities can be a challenge, here are some thoughts to consider.• Be curious. Artists won’t hesitate to answer questions you may have when you’re considering the purchase of a work of art. The inspiration behind a piece and the process it took to make it are all aspects that are very important to its value and your enjoyment of the work.• Trust your judgment. If the work — whether decorative or functional — speaks to you; if it seems strong, distinctive, startlingly beautiful, interesting or poignant the first, second and
third time you look at it, you will probably enjoy it more with each passing year.• Will it fit into my home? There is no reason why an intriguing contemporary blown vase can’t sit happily beside an old copper pot or a modern sculpture can’t compliment a traditional painting. It touches your heart then it should grace your home. Besides, an eclectic grouping of art gives a home character and warmth.
Have fun, walk around the entire show to get a feel for what might fit in best in your collection and use this wonderful opportunity to purchase a piece to enjoy.
