Visual eects
In lmmaking, visual eects (abbreviated VFX) are theprocesses by which imagery is created and/or manipu-lated outside the context of a live action shot. Visualeects involve the integration of live-action footage andgenerated imagery to create environments which lookrealistic, but would be dangerous, expensive, impracti-cal, or simply impossible to capture on lm. Visual ef-fects using computer generated imagery has recently be-come accessible to the independent lmmaker with theintroduction of aordable and easy-to-use animation andcompositing software.
1 TimingVisual eects are often integral to a movies story andappeal. Although most visual eects work is com-pleted during post-production, it usually must be care-fully planned and choreographed in pre-production andproduction. Visual eects primarily executed in Post-Production, with the use of multiple tools and technolo-gies such as graphic design, modeling, animation and sim-ilar software, while special eects such as explosions andcar chases are made on set. A visual eects supervisor isusually involved with the production from an early stageto work closely with production and the lms directordesign, guide and lead the teams required to achieve thedesired eects.
2 CategoriesVisual eects may be divided into at least four categories:
Matte paintings and stills: digital or traditionalpaintings or photographs which serve as backgroundplates for keyed or rotoscoped elements.
Live-action eects: keying actors or models throughbluescreening and greenscreening.
Digital animation: modeling, computer graph-ics lighting, texturing, rigging, animating, andrendering computer-generated 3D characters, par-ticle eects, digital sets, backgrounds.
Digital eects (commonly shortened to digital FXor FX) are the various processes by which imageryis created and/or manipulated with or from photo-graphic assets. Digital eects often involve the in-
tegration of still photography and computer gener-ated imagery (CGI) in order to create environmentswhich look realistic, but would be dangerous, costly,or simply impossible to capture in camera. FX isusually associated with the still photography worldin contrast to visual eects which is associated withmotion lm production.
