In Cost Benefit, I perform as nine personas situated in the U.S. healthcare system – a system in which language determines your body and incentives determine decision-making. The system’s structure rewards complicity. I posit that there is a conflict when people internalize the system and begin acting on its behalf, even if it means denying another human being aid. In the face of this conflict, do the personas defend and propagate the system, submit to it, resist it, or are they blind to it?

The way ‘space’ is structured to become ‘place’ is informed by an ideology that has a profound effect upon how people interact with one another both within and between cultures. In my region of Central Florida, I’ve witnessed how fragmentation within our communities, segregation of the population and homogenization of our culture has lead to loss of diversity and vitality that is echoed within our larger society.

As a photographer, my work serves as a document of this ever-changing, ever-‘saming’ cultural landscape by portraying the efficacy of memory and it’s complex relationship to place…beyond the photographic surface.

Rolf HoegI use traditional methods of making as a vehicle to critique and reframe our relationship with “functional objects”. To me, the object is merely a container embodying ideas of identity, use-value, economy, and globalization. It is through function that this container provides a context and capacity for these ideas to be repositioned within an existing structure. It is through function that my work speaks, and like words, relies on people, use, and sometimes humor to activate it.

Angela Meronsixtynine (conversations)

Conversation involves risk. It can bring people and ideas together. The results are not guaranteed but there is the possibility that it can create change in the world and the way you see the world. Beginning with five young women age nineteen to twenty three, my projects have included nearly fifty people: male and female, age nineteen to sixty, all currently living in Iowa but one. A snapshot of a community recorded at a local bar and at my studio. Details aren’t disclosed in this work but you hear a conclusion and a beginning of a conversation.
