Considering the legacy left behind after graduation

Letting go of past pains proves essential to future growthAs I sit here, str uggling to find

words that adequately describe

my experience at Hoban over the

past four years, I can’t help but become

overwhelmed with a deluge of confl icting

emotions brought about by the act of

reflecting upon my time spent in high

school, an act which, like most things

in life, is both painful and rewarding.

The pain comes from my recollection of

all the bad times I have experienced. Whether

it’s fi ghting with friends or family, getting in

trouble with the administration or any of the

other situations which would be too diffi cult

to describe via a column in the Visor, there

have been many occasions where I have

found myself angry, regretful, depressed,

confused or any combinations of the lot.

I’m not saying I have had a rough

life or that I should be pitied, but I am

rather acknowledging the fact that I have

made many mistakes in recent years

and, regardless of whether they involved

something I did or something I didn’t do,

they have all had an impact on me which still

evokes an emotional response to this day.

One thing which I believe I need to fully

recognize before I go out and enter the real

world, whatever that means, is that I am a

human, and that humans make mistakes.

While this recognition is not an excuse

to continually make the same mistakes

over and over, that would be more in the

realms of stupidity than of enlightened

action, it does provide a reason to prevent

past events which I no longer have control

over from continually infl icting pain. Rafi ki

said it best, the past can hurt, but you

can either run from it, or learn from it.

With that out of the way, it is time to talk

about the rewarding part of these refl ections

which involves the fond memories of

all the amazing people I have met, all

the fantastical things I have done and

all the awe inspiring places I have been.

Honestly, I cannot put into words how

much the opportunities I have been given

have allowed me to exit my comfort zone and

strengthen not only the relationship I have

with my immediate community as well as the

global community, but also the relationship

I have with myself. Looking back at how

much has changed for the better fi lls me

with a sense of joy and accomplishment

that far outweighs any sadness caused by

the reasons previously mentioned. My

time spent here will forever hold a place

in my heart as one of the most important

times in the formation of who I am today,

and of who I will be in years to come.

I think I might have had a better idea of

what to write for this sort of thing four

years ago, before I started at Archbishop

Hoban High School and before graduation

was lurking right around the corner. Maybe

it is just because I probably would have

procrastinated a lot less about it, or maybe

it is because I would have been able to

write sentence after cheesy, melodramatic

sentence about events that I would be likely

to hold dear, people I would soon meet

and fi nd myself happily unable to forget

and life lessons I would be bound to learn.

Now, sitting here trying to write this, it

is much harder than any of that. It’s trying

to put together something that transcends

each one of those cookie cutter sort of ideas

and making it into something someone

out there besides my mom might want to

read. It has become trying to fi gure out

what these four years have meant to me,

what they’ve made me think and what

I’ve done with them as opposed to a list of

accomplishments and stereotypical nostalgia.

That brings me to talk about Wednesday,

or for myself and maybe a few others out

there, blue and orange Wednesday. For two

years now, I have worn blue and orange

each and every wednesday of every week,

an ideal born out of depths of an AP History

course. It is the one dress coded day that

actually lasted through the long monotonous

days of high school unlike so many others

before it. Argyle Thursday was a hit for

awhile, I still wear the socks some weeks,

but for the most part it died out and despite

the fact that the Hack-E-Sac Team will be

competing in the National Tournament

next week the teams desire to dress up day

after day was shut down by the polo police.

It is through the little things in high

school that a person can defi ne themselves.

Whether it be a personal color scheme you

wear, or that special parking spot that’s been

yours for four straight years, maybe you

know the secret of which drinking fountain

spawns water from the fountain of youth.

All that matters is that there is something

that exists to make high school more than

just an education, but something personal,

something to look forward to each day and

the next. For me, that was blue and orange

Wednesday, and each and every one of

you that sported the colors here and there

made all the difference for my high school

experience, and I thank you for making

me smile, even if it occurred by chance.

So as a par ting gift, I only ask one

thing. Next Wednesday, when I’m happily

bound by my second favorite dress of

shir t and tie, wear blue and orange.

And if that is too much to ask for, than

simply do something that means a thing

or two to you. Because after four years

of school have gone by you’ll look back,

and it will have made all the difference.

Outward focus results in a sense of accomplishment

Senior advises students to branch out of friend circleAs the fi nal days of high school begin

to slip away faster, and the reality of

graduation steadily creeps closer for

us seniors, it is about this time that everyone

tends to get sentimental and, let’s be honest,

a little sappy. And I could not help but

notice that the more emotional and panicked

everyone becomes, and the more rapidly the

school year starts to wrap up, the more clichés

begin to pop up in the hallways. I, however, am

no exception to this phenomenon. After all,

clichés are clichés for a reason: they convey

truth. So as I present to you a piece of cliché

senior advice, I only ask that you understand

that I am only telling you this because I have

found it in this last year to be absolutely true.

As I am sure you all known, senior year

holds some really exciting and memorable

experiences. From Mum Day to the prom,

we are always busy participating in all of

these special senior moments. However,

as I look back on my fi nal year at Hoban,

the one thing that really stands out to me

is not so much the events, but the people.

When I started my senior year, I was

really excited to spend time with my friends

and go to all of the senior events together.

However, what I did not expect was to make

so many new friends along the way. Becoming

friends with someone that you have known

for four years probably seems like a strange

concept, but knowing someone’s name or

just knowing that they exist is very different

from actually getting to know who a person

is. There were plenty of people prior to

this year who I knew, but for some reason

or another, whether our paths had never

really crossed, or we just never decided to

strike up a conversation, we were not friends.

Yet somehow this year, maybe because

we were just thrown together by chance or

because people tend to grow into themselves

and become more open senior year, a couple

of those people and myself took that special

step, probably without even conscientiously

realizing it at the time, towards becoming

actual friends. There have been so many

amazing people that I have met this year that

I sincerely regret not taking the time to get

to know sooner. It is honestly my only real

regret about my high school experience.

Which is why I am telling you this now,

so that you do not wait until the last second

like I did. This school is full of some incredible

people, who I will be really sad to leave behind.

But since you will still be here, get out there

and meet some new people, people who

you may think that you already know. After

all, you could be missing the opportunity

to make some really great friends.

For Anna Baumhoer and myself,

Tuesdays have become a sor t of

D-day. Throughout the course of this

year, they have been defi ned by late nights

in the Visor room, junk food dinners and

hectically trying to pull the paper together

on time. As I walked through the deserted

Hoban parking lot at 9pm on this very last

Tuesday, to the only car left waiting for its

counterpart, with a stack of senior surveys

to be typed up in my hands, I came to realize

that these Tuesdays represent my greatest

success at Hoban: the attainment, I am hopeful

in my claim, of the status servant leader.

I do not point this out in order to draw

attention to myself. I have already received

my reward in getting to see the staff’s hard

work paid off in the fi nal copies of the Visor

that arrive each month. However, I must call

to mind the concept of servant leader in order

to best portray the lesson that I have learned

most thoroughly during my time at Hoban.

The lesson is this: the smallest moment lived

focused on another is far more satisfying

than any length of time focused on self.

This cannot be a superfi cial goal. When

motivation to seem helpful or complementary

comes from a need to “look good,” the focus

remains on self. It is when the wellbeing of

another truly transcends the inherent need for

self-preservation and attention that one lives

in the service of others. Some of my absolute

favorite moments at Hoban stem from either

being a spectator of a selfl ess act, or being

lucky enough to have had the Holy Spirit work

through me in order to perform a selfl ess act.

By focusing on others, I have met many

amazing people with incredible stories, many

of whom I would never have met if I had been

preoccupied with my own selfi sh motives. I

have been continually surprised at how easy it

is to live one’s life focused more on others than

on oneself. It is as simple as greeting everyone

you meet in the hallway or classroom, asking

someone how they are doing, actually

listening to the answer and being aware

of the little things happening around you.

As my senior year draws to a close, I hope

that I am able to hold on to this mindset and

hope others will share it with me. Especially

since, in the end, I have come to realize that

as soon as one dedicates their life to others,

when the focus on self is eradicated, it is the

self that benefi ts most. Each year that I have

attended Hoban has been progressively more

enjoyable to me as I have put this lesson into

action. With the culmination of my senior year,

I am the happiest I have ever been. I can only

attribute this happiness to every single person

I have been lucky enough to meet at Hoban.

Personal relationships lost in attachment to social media

Class of 2013 becomes memorable class in fi nal yearEver since Shaquella created the

2013- 20- 20- 13 anthem at rent-a-

junior last year, the class of 2013 has

surpassed all expectations. Not only did

we continue Hoban’s traditions in a new

and unique fashion, we also distinguished

ourselves by using our many talents to

leave what I hope will be a lasting legacy.

We are a diverse graduating class; I am

not talking about an old wooden ship. From

Anthony Osmun cheering on Phil Brett at

a Friday night football game, to Stephen

English owning the talent show stage with

his dozen performances, to Rachel Rodgers

creating a masterpiece in the art room or Alan

Jankowski never failing to deliver humorous

announcements with the best weather guy in

the tri-state area, the class of 2013 has spread its

infl uence in all areas of the Hoban community.

Our class had a plethora of great ideas and

was able to turn many of them into realities

which has made all the difference. Mario

Micale’s harlem shake, lip dub (R.I.P.), and

the new H video helped unite the school

to an even higher level. I believe we have

shown the Akron community what Hoban

is all about. From the people, to athletics,

to the education, Hoban has grown to

be something that youngsters all around

Northeast Ohio want to be apart of and

the class of 2013 has helped promote this

new image with its spirit, and enthusiasm.

I have been blessed to have great

classmates and a supportive group of friends

who have stood by me through good times and

bad. From late night golfi ng at Chenoweth or

swimming at the Spears’ no two adventures

have been the same. Although our high school

years may be coming to a close, I know going

my own way will make me mature and my

relationships with my friends will continue

to grow despite the distance between us. I

strongly respect my friends, my classmates

and everyone at Hoban who has made this

year, and my four years here the best of my life.

Even though it might sound cliche, my

senior year has been one of the best years of

my life and the most memorable during my

time at Hoban. I’m going to miss the Hoban

community, but plan on continuing in the

Holy Cross tradition for four more years as

I embark on my new journey. With the new

standards that have been brought to the table,

I cannot wait to call myself a Hoban alum, and

to see the legacy continued in the future.

Sorry to distract you.

It is an epidemic that has infi ltrated into

our world one Social Media network at a

time, and has increased its malice with every

new App downloaded onto a smart phone.

The technology craze that has consumed

the world has people obsessed with their

beloved devices and constantly occupied with

improving their virtual selves. The devices

have become more than mere mechanisms

for communication and enter tainment;

they have transformed into a way of life.

It is nearly impossible to walk into a room

and not see someone fi ddling with an iPhone or

other smart phone. Not having a smart phone

myself, I almost feel isolated from some sort of

special club that everyone seems to be a part

of. It has become a cult. With group messaging,

Snapchatting, and countless other iPhone

quirks, members of this virtual world are

incessantly referencing something funny that

I am totally unaware of due to my possession of

a simple Pantech touch screen phone. At times

it can be frustrating; however I stand strong in

my decision to not purchase a smart phone.

My fi rst reason for this was that I refused

to be one of those people who are constantly

on his or her phone in public when they could

be using this opportunity to genuinely interact

with people face to face. Simply possessing

one of these devices presents a temptation,

especially for teenagers, to take out their

phone and ignore everything around them.

Secondly, the attachment to social media

that these phones provide easy access for

is causing people to mask their real selves.

People are now more concerned with how

they present themselves on social media than

how they present themselves in real life. It’s

become a competition: who has the funniest

tweets, who has the most likes on Instagram,

who looks the best in their profi le picture?

All of high school we have been taught not

to place labels on other people. However, the

last thing we do is fi ll out Senior Superlatives

where we distinctly label people according to

what we believe them to be. Although this is a

fun end of the year activity, many of us voted

for someone who we just heard is the “Most

Shy” or “Worst Driver” even if we lacked the

evidence to validate this ourselves. Social

media encourages the same idea. It lures us to

judge others based solely on their Facebook or

Twitter page and not for who they really are.

We only have one life. Why are we spending

it behind a computer screen or constantly on

our phones? God created us to crave human

interaction, and the truest way we can satisfy

this desire is by forming relationships face to

face. I present a challenge to the entire faculty,

staff, and students of Hoban, but mostly to

myself and my fellow classmates of 2013: get

out and live life the way God wants you to, make

each day your masterpiece without your phone

as the paintbrush, and yes, be true to you.
