In the heart of a cirque, early morning light bathes the ‘remparts’ as waterfalls cascade down slopes covered with ferns and the climbing branches of the chayote fruit plant (a local vegetable) in the forest. Later on, after having crossed lunar landscapes, the volcano is there, seemingly peaceful yet waiting to erupt and send a light show of lava down the slopes.
Lunch time will be a treat for the taste buds, with a cari lunch simmered for a long time, accompanied with rougail (spicy sauce) and a delicious creamy vanilla sauce in a really hospitable setting. In the afternoon, enjoy the lagoon, the beach or the beauty of marine life. At tea time, walk in a village filled with colourful Creole houses, nicely decorated with decorative valances. As soon as the
sun sets, the night jasmine scent escapes from the gardens to fill the air with its fresh aroma. All over the island, stone fireplaces, chimneys and temples show the story forged by the Reunionese of diverse origins. In the evening, enjoy the Creole flavours and the quiet singing on the breeze in the filaos trees (casuarina). Here, in La Reunion, the music, like the spices, can be
enjoyed on every street corner. On the beach, you will learn to move to the energetic rhythms of Sega music or to flirt with the swaying rhythms of Maloya. And for the bravest, nightclubs offer the best DJs to liven up the night with dancehall music or boisterous hip-hop. Maloya, just like the tango, is listed as a cultural heritage of humanity. Discover it as you dance…
In Reunion, an exciting adventure awaits you. In the tropics, only two to three hours time difference from Paris, the Bourbon Island reveals its beauty to the world for everyone’s delight, with its ”Pitons, Cirques & Remparts” all on the UNESCO world heritage list. This exceptional island awaits you.
The ”Pitons, Cirques & Remparts” of Reunion are a window into the creation of the earth, with each landscape being defined by green “remparts”(natural mountain sides carved from erosion). Behind them appear an imposing site with breathtaking views and fantastic light shows. Arranged in the form of a shamrock are the three cirques: Mafate, Salazie and Cilaos, joined to the Piton des Neiges on one side, show their uniqueness. On the other side, Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, provides a visual spectacle for tourists at each of its eruptions.
You will be amazed by its biodiversity, a real miracle of nature. Here is actually one of the planet’s top hotspots for biodiversity, with over one thousand six hundred plant species. Reunion is an island of 2,512 km², with the advantage of being an exotic island while still remaining a part of France. The pleasant temperatures throughout the year make the island an extraordinary tropical garden, diversified and colourful, thanks to the inventiveness and pleasure its inhabitants find in gardening. On the coast, you will be able to relax on the beach or take a plunge into the lagoon to discover the fabulous
underwater world. There is also the enchanting sight of whales arriving for breeding season.
The variety of landscapes gives you a daily feeling of visiting a new country.
Everything in Reunion is easily accessible in just one day, you can do a tour round the island and when you come to the end you will have the impression of having travelled round the world as the scenery is so diverse.

La Reunion, an island like no other A walk into the heart of Reunion Island

By mountain bikeAnother way to descend the slopes of our volcanic island.
In the airUsing a paraglider, paraplane, parachute… you will experience more thrills while gliding in the air like a ‘papangue’ (Reunion Harrier). Reunion is a spot universally known by amateur thrill-seekers. You can take a flight over the island in a helicopter or a microlite, a truly fabulous experience.
On horsebackThe equestrian centres for tourists entice you with a thousand unimaginable places to visit.
On the golf courseAre you an amateur golfer? Welcome to Reunion. Several courses give you the possibility of putting your skills to the test.
In the waterFor the more adventurous, go clim-bing or abseiling, canyoning in the deep ravines of Fleurs Jaunes in Cilaos, Trou Blanc in Hell-Bourg or Bras Noir in La Plaine des Palmistes, all offering unforgettable sensations and a different way to admire Reu-nion’s exceptional scenery
In Reunion, there is a wide range of safe leisure activities all year long. Qualified guides and monitors certified by the French government will help you practise your preferred sport or help you discover one you always dreamed of taking up. An indescribable pleasure not to be missed. Time for take-off!
On footThe Island is open to all, relaxed walkers, hardened hikers and professional trail runners.
An island in the middle of the Indian Ocean is inevitably a dream destination for swimming, the beach, scuba diving and all kinds of nautical activities. In La Reunion, you can enjoy yourself in front of and behind the coral barrier reef. Diving into the clear waters of the lagoon is a pleasure everyone should enjoy.
The soft sand and sunny beaches are protected by a coral reef for thirty kilometres, and with just a mask and snorkel, your adventure is underway. In deeper waters, equipped with an oxygen tank and mask, the sights become simply astonishing. And the beautiful marine turtles always amaze divers.
The Natural Marine Reserve, created in 2007, covers 3,500 hectares and has the role of protecting the coral reefs while preserving the balance
of this invaluable living jewel. However, swimming and leisure activities are authorised there. From June to October, whales come here to breed just off the coast. A breathtaking spectacle!
The west coast has surfing spots with excellent breaking waves, in particular the “la gauche” of Saint-Leu which is classified as one of the three best waves in the world.
In the East, other nautical types
of activity flourish in the pools and rivers, ideal places for water activities, white water rafting, kayaking, hydro speed… or quite simply bathing in the fresh water is very appreciated in summer.
Move to the rhythm of the tides, and most importantly enjoy discovering the jewels of Reunion.
A discovery full of surprises! In this natural marine reserve there are numerous fish and coral, but also turtles and dolphins all year round, and humpback whales which come to Reunionese waters to give birth between June and October.

At daybreak, the sun emerges. Leaving from Bourg-Murat, the climb takes a winding road bordered by a forest of cryptomeria trees. Everything is already exotic. Take the time to stop before your descent to embrace the magic of La Plaine des Sables, with its unique lunar landscape, covered with orangy-brown stones. Silence is not uncommon as you cross in awe and wonderment.
First stop: the Pas de Bellecombe, and your descent into the vast
landscape of the enclosure. Like the first steps on the moon. Each step on the hardened lava plunges you further into a strange universe which will move the more rational and enchant the more poetic. The ascent to the crater is rather long, but on arrival is a splendour!
Return via the ‘Route des Laves’ to enjoy more sights. The national road cuts its way though old lava flows which fall into the ocean. Some are old and already fully covered with vegetation, others still bare,
but already some greenery grows through the basalt. An emotional pleasure. Experience it yourself.
Reunion Island is entirely volcanic. The Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active vol-canoes in the world, has created the landscape and with each eruption flows into the sea. The other volcano is now plunged into an eternal sleep: the Piton des Neiges is the highest summit in the Indian Ocean at 3,071 m.
Often cooked with a wood fire, cari is the main dish in Reunion. Cari bichique, cari camarons, cari boucané… there are as many forms as there are ways to cook it. It is served with rice, beans, greens and spicy rougail (a sauce made with tomatoes, onions or aubergine).
At aperitif time, it’s impossible to resist the range of rums accompanied by samosas. Each family, each table d’hôte and each restaurant has traditionally concocted their own recipe. Your taste buds will be tempted at the sight of splendid jars of fruits, aromatic plants soaked in rum and sugar.
Another story from Reunion is the history of the vanilla flower. It was in 1841 that the young slave Edmond Albius discovered, with his skilful hands, a method of pollination which is still done delicately by hand. In the hills of the Maïdo, which offers exceptional views of the three cirques at sunrise, the tradition of distilling essential oils of geranium and vetiver is continued. You won’t be able to resist breathing in these sublime aromas.
Smell! Taste! Savour! And above all enjoy…
The whole island is alive with natural fragrances and sunshine while the aromas of spices envelop the senses on the market stalls, a true festival of colours and scents in the region of the exquisite vanilla. You can enjoy the food all through the day. Creole cuisine is rich with the traditional ‘cari’, and European, Chinese, Indian and Malagasy influences form an integral part of the gastronomical landscape of Reunion.

As a stopover on the East Indies Trading Route, Reunion is one of the most exciting of the Indian Ocean’s ‘Vanilla Isles’, with a unique history forged by men from Africa, Europe and Asia. The eight hundred thousand inhabitants are living proof of overcoming the challenge of bringing mixed races together.
A voyage of the mindReunion offers you at every turn and street corner the wealth of its cultu-ral, artistic and biological heritage, shown especially in the colourful Creole houses with their decorative valances and the beautiful residences with a ‘guétali’ (kiosk to watch pas-sers-by). A marvel for the mind and those with a hunger for learning. Let yourself be surprised!
Reunion: a must-see destination for any traveler looking to discover the world.
A land of hospitality‘Petits Blancs’ (descendents of the colonists), Cafres (descendents of Malagasy or African slaves), Ta-mils or Malabars (Hindu Indians), ‘Z’arabes’ (Muslim Indians), Chinese and ‘Z’oreils’ (Europeans), Como-reans and people from Mayotte… The island’s ethnic diversity is a real strength bringing all Creoles a source of pride of their origins.
The bringing together of religions The pride of the Reunionese is their respect for others, which is written in their genes. This tolerance is symbolised by the churches, Tamil temples, mosques and Chinese pagodas which form an integral part of the urban landscape

Saint-Denis, Sainte-Marie, Sainte-Suzanne
Welcome to the ‘Beau Pays’ (Beautiful Country)
This was the nickname given by Etienne REGNAULT, Reunion’s first governor to the towns of Saint-Denis, Sainte-Marie and Sainte-Suzanne, offering a colourful array of rich and unique heritage: from large Creole homes to picturesque walks, from outdoor nature activities to fun nights out, the life all the way from Cap Saint-Bernard to the Sainte-Suzanne river is truly buzzing.
The Barachois Coastal road located along the seafront of Saint- Denis, the Barachois (meaning ‘small basic port’ or ‘small shelter for boats’) is today a long stretch of grass wonderful for walks with stunning panoramas at sunset.
The Chaudron Market Fruits and vegetables, fish and seafood, poultry, spices, handicraft, djembés… Over 400 stalls with colourful parasols jostle together in this wonderfully bustling market. It is worth coming here just to experience the atmosphere of this typical place alone! This Marketplace reflects the image of Reunion Island: a kaleidoscope of sounds, colours, tastes and smells... Wednesdays and Sundays from 6h to 12h.
Religious Sites in Saint-DenisReunion: an example of brotherhood to show the world! All together, Christian churches, Tamil temples, Buddhist pagodas and Muslim mosques have all found their place in the towns and lives of the Reunionese. Among the religious sites in Saint-Denis, there is the Hindu temple Kalikambal, the Chinese temples Chane and Lisi Tong, the grand mosque Noor Al Islam and the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral.
Guided visits and tours in Saint-Denis There are several themed guided tours, on foot or by bicycle in the island’s main town: historic monuments and Creole houses, history of the East India Trading Company, visit of four religious buildings, bike tours, hiking up in the hills of Saint-Denis, workshops to participate in … For fun nights out: go to the ‘Let’s Speak Creole’ workshop, then head to the Bowling alley or even the casino. And late into the night, just choose your spot: bars, clubs, gay-friendly... you’re sure to be in for a long night. Find the dates for up-coming circuits and workshops on the website of the Inter-Communal Tourist office of the North.
Or rather, Cultures ! All the different cultures that make up the population of Reunion. All the artistic culture and lifestyles in Reunion. The island’s main city brings together the different aspects of the rich local heritage. And surrounding all this, an exuberant natural landscape welcoming trekkers, hikers and Sunday afternoon walkers with open arms.
“Creole Houses Circuit“From the former Hotel de Ville up to the State Gardens, admire the historic monuments and Creole houses along the Rue de Paris, one of the city’s most emblematic roads for Creole architecture. The former Hôtel de Ville sym-bolises the prosperity of the colony under the Second Empire. The Creole house of Raymond Barre, entirely made of wood, is one of the most beautiful tributes to the expertise of local craftsmen. The Artothèque, formerly the Villa Mancini, is today an art gallery with the objec-tive of developing artistic creation and promo-ting Indian Ocean artists.
The Musée Léon Dierx is a museum of contemporary art from the collection of Reu-nion’s famous art collector, Ambroise Vollard (1838-1930).
Circuit on foot with a heritage guide, from Monday to Saturday.Duration of visit: 1h30 by reservation at the OTI NorthRates : 8 €/person
The 19th Edition of the GRAND RAID (La Diagonale des Fous) is a legendary mountain race, which will take place this year from 13th to 16th October 2011. After a few modifications to the 2010 version (a longer course and the Semi-Raid renamed Trail de Bourbon), 2011 will have a new addition. Three extreme mountain races in one, over just one weekend.Organised alongside the Diagonale des Fous leaving from Saint-Philippe (162km and 9643m positive altitude climb) there is the 12th Edition of the Trail de Bourbon leaving from Cilaos (93km and 4920m of positive altitude climb) on the 15th and 16th October. A third race has been added for the event in 2011. This new mountain race is called La Mascareignes and will start from Grand Ilet on October 15th 2011, crossing 61km with a positive altitude climb of 3036m, which is more accessible for less capable runners. The three races finish at La Redoute stadium in Saint-Denis.

The Lighthouse The only flashing lighthouse of the whole Indian Ocean, it guided ships arriving in Reunion between 1846 and 1984. No longer in use, this historic monument now houses exhibitions and a bicycle hire shop.
Cascade NiagaraA must-see, the Niagara waterfall is one of the most visited sites in Sainte-Suzanne. You can reach the bottom of the waterfall by car and stop to take some great photos.
The Seafront ChapelSmall Tamil temple set into the foot of a cliff. Access: follow the road to the Grand Hazier domain then carry on towards the sea. The temple is where you can see 2 colourful columns. Please respect this site.
Workshops to participate in ‘Saveurs Créoles’ Why not learn to cook a log-fire cari like the Reunionese do? First you have to go to the market to buy vegetables and spices, time to prepare and appreciate your lunch in the gardens of the lighthouse.
Vacoa plant weaving In the shade of the Sainte-Suzanne lighthouse, learn how to weave vacoa plants. Take home the fruits of your efforts : a wicker-work object.
Guided tours Return to the ‘Beau pays’ The owner of the Grand Hazier Domain opens the doors of this wonderful old Creole estate. You can also visit the one hundred-year-old orchard and then the vanilla plantation.
Sainte-Suzanne by bicycle A 12 kilometre circuit across fields of sugar cane and vast Creole estates.
Microlite flight: «Pitons, Cirques and Remparts” seen from the airThis microlite flight takes off from Sainte-Marie and flies over the local sites which have helped to bring Reunion its World Heritage status. A pre-recorded commentary explains the geological formation of the ‘Pitons,’ has the birdsong of endemic birds such as the Tuit-Tuit, and also deals with the historic aspect with information about the conscripted workers brought in from India. Flight lasts 45 mins, reservations at the OTI North. Price : 99 €/pers
Sainte-Suzanne: a key site for vanilla… and cari cooked over log fires!
Would you like to learn how to cook a cari over a log fire? It is now possible. The workshop takes place at the Sainte-Suzanne lighthouse. Partici-pants of this Creole cuisine workshop have their lunch in the lighthouse gardens looking out over the Indian Ocean.
In the afternoon you visit the Vanilla plantation. In the heart of an old sugar domain, find out how to pollinate a vanilla flower (in season) and learn all about the drying techniques of this pre-cious orchid.Admire the sunset at the seafront, where you can also see the ‘Chapelle Front de Mer’, a Tamil temple and a haven of sea spray and tranquility. If you go inside, please respect this sacred place by not walking into the area reserved for fire-walking.
With sugar cane fields as far as the eye can see, rugged shorelines and thunderous ocean waves, it is a truly authentic place. The site of Reunion’s international airport, it was also the home of some of aviation’s greatest pioneers, who first flew from Reunion to Mainland France back in 1929 – amazing!
Fishing port and marina. The only berth for fishing and pleasure boats in the north of the island, the port of Sainte-Marie is a pleasant place for sea walks by the ocean. Restaurants nearby.
The Black Virgin This small oratory is a tribute to the legend of the fugitive slave Mario. To protect him from his pursuers, he prayed to the Virgin: miraculously a bush appeared in which he could hide. The statue of the Virgin is the site of an annual pilgrimage on May 1st.
Hiking up to Piton Fougères A loop which takes you deep into a forest of ferns, strawberry guava, eucalyptus and highland tamarind trees. And as a bonus, stunning viewpoints of the Roche Ecrite, the Rivière des Pluies and the cirque of Salazie…
Tamil fire-walking ceremonies from January 1st to 3rd 2012 in Sainte-Marie but also across the rest of the island.
If the name "Quartier Français" evokes the site’s rich history, it is because it was one of the first settlements of the Reunionese population. One of the most important sites for the sugar industry, it has kept a lot to show off its influential past. Today, Sainte-Suzanne is a modern town out in the countryside.

The Natural Marine Reserve. The west has the most beautiful beaches in Reunion, stretching along 25km of coastline, from white sand to black sand and from lagoons to the deep ocean sea. The Indian Ocean is inhabited by multi-coloured fish and coral of all shapes and sizes and is a veritable natural aquarium whose temperature never drops below 21°. To ensure sustainable protection, this fragile environment has now been transformed into a Nature Reserve. The Eco-guardians are on watch! On the beach at l’Ermitage, they have even created an underwater path. Wearing flippers, mask and snorkel, this free guided tour takes you in among damselfish, triggerfish, clownfish, angelfish and masked bannerfish…

The West : the entrance gate to Reunion’s history This is where it all began! Acting as the front door, the west coast was where the first inhabitants of Reunion landed ashore.
Mentioned on maritime maps as of the beginning of the 16th century, Reunion Island remained an uninhabited paradise for a long time. Merely a stop-off point on the East India trading route for pirates and sailors who came to replenish provisions, the island had its first inhabitants in 1638. On the day of Saint Paul no less! The bay of Saint-Paul was also named the ‘Bay for best anchorage’ and this was where most of the boats arrived.
A religious and ethnic mosaic In the west, there are many sites which bear witness to the religious fervor of the Reunionese, but also testify as to the blending of races among the population, their beliefs and superstitions.
Testament to a rich and turbulent past, there are more historic places here than anywhere else. A few examples - The Villèle Museum was the former residence of the island’s most influential landowner, Mme Desbassyns. She had this chapel built on her estate in order to convert her slaves. -The Marine Cemetery in Saint-Paul has several famous people buried there: the poet Leconte Delisle, his muse Elixène de Lanux, the pirate La Buse and his unusual grave… -Le Lazaret, in La Possession, was for a long time set aside as a quarantine area for Indian workers conscripted en masse between 1828 and 1935. - La Chapelle la Misère : located in Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts, it was apparently the very first Hindu temple here. - Stella Matutina Museum (currently closed for renovation, re-opening scheduled for mid 2012) is an old sugar factory up in the hills in Piton Saint-Leu. The site has been reconverted into an agricultural and industrial museum and traces the island’s history from the arrival of the conscripted workers from India who were brought in mainly to work in the sugar cane fields.
Marketplaces rich in Creole heart and soulFrom Le Port to Saint-Leu, the marketplaces in the west are a fine tribute to this incomparable way of life, with bursting vegetable stalls revealing the true Creole heart and soul. The market of Saint-Paul is one of Reunion’s biggest. It takes place along the sea front on Fridays (all day) and Saturday mornings. The markets of Saint-Leu and Trois-Bassins take place in the town centre, also on Saturday mornings, and the market of Le Port is at the Place des Cheminots, on Wednesday mornings, just like the one in Saint-Gilles.
Flower displays of a thousand colours, handicraft from Reunion and elsewhere, vegetables of all shapes and sizes, fresh fruit and pyramids of spices leaving colourful traces like in some impressionist painting. As they leave church and join the marketplace, senior citizens known as «gramounes» add a little something to the infallible charm, a touch of Reunionese life of years gone by. It all paints an innocent picture reflecting the gentleness of an era that has not quite finished.
A party of a thousand colours The West is the ideal setting for all nights out, concerts, shows and nightlife. No day goes by without something fun happening in this party-loving region.
• there are reputed venues (The K, The Séchoir, the Open Air Theatre, The Kabardock, The Leconte Delisle centre…) all with an eclectic program. • colourful cultural events all year round: The Leu Tempo Festival, the Grand Boucan (Reunion’s biggest carnival at the end of June), the Tam Tam Festival; the Festival de la Création ; the Film Festival, the ‘Déboussolés’ (electro-jazz music festival), the ‘Nouvelles Guinguettes’… • many bars, restaurants and clubs to assure you a great night out every night.

Between Saint-Paul and Saint-Leu, eroded flows of basalt lava have formed breathtaking slopes with rugged relief, with dense forests, digging vast ravines between the sea and the cirques finishing with plains of savanna sweetly sweeping down to the rough ocean shore.
The Kélonia Centre in Saint-Leu is a scientific research base and information and protection centre for marine turtles. Visitors can get all the up-to-date knowledge about these affectionate reptiles and their environment.
The Aquarium of Reunion in Saint-Gilles : take a dive in the superb aquarium in Saint-Gilles in the company of your Indian Ocean hosts. The guest stars : sharks, barracudas, sting-rays…
The saltwater lake of Saint-Paul : one of the wilder places along the coastline. Great for amateur water-skiers, it also has a swamp of taro plants, a labyrinth of streams cutting through papyrus plants all the way to the wonderful walk of the Tour des Roches, just at the foot of the mountains around Saint-Paul. There is a little tourist train you can take to visit here, complete with historic commentary.
The Insectarium in Le Port offers a stunning insight into the world of insects, with information about the lives and habitats of these not-so-creepy creepy-crawlies, from the most annoying (the mosquito!) to the most surprising (stick insects with their amazing camouflage). You can admire the insects’ habits and meet some tame chameleons in the butterfly garden outside.
Mafate : A unique site in Reunion The first inhabitant of this cirque, cut off from the world was an escaped Malagasy slave with a formidable name: Mafate (meaning ‘that which is dangerous’) reigned for much of the 18th century over a community of escaped slaves before finally giving his name to the cirque.
The wildest of the three cirques is still as cut off from the world: even today the only ways in are by helicopter or on foot. With a surface area of 95 km2, there are no less than 100km of footpaths including one National GR footpath (GR3).
All around the mountains form huge ridges with a dozen summits all over 2000m high. Between forests, ravines and rocky summits lie little villages with locals happy to welcome the many trekkers with open arms. The emblem of Mafate is a mountain goat – that says it all!
The National Park of Reunion : A long-lasting relationship with nature.
The forests of Le Maïdo and Trois-Bassins, the cirque of Mafate and the slopes of the Grand Bé-nare are all exceptional sites which benefit from the park’s protection. Walks and short hikes can be outings that last from a few hours, half a day or a full day, without having to spend a night out in the mountains. They don’t require any special
preparation. However, because of the mountai-nous relief it is necessary to be reasonably fit and always well-equipped (water, enough food, warm clothing and waterproofs) and of course not to stray from the footpaths. As you walk, keep your ears and eyes open to admire the endemic flora and fauna, a never-ending pleasure.
With exceptional wealth and diversity, the natural habitats of the west are some of Reunion’s most precious gems.
The Jardin d’Eden (Garden of Eden) : near the beach at L’Ermitage, prepare to be charmed by the heady perfumes of this exuberant nature. Grand Bénare : A breath-taking viewpoint located in the commune of Trois-Bassins, the Grand Bénare is an exceptional panorama over the cirques of Mafate and Cilaos from an altitude of over 2,896m. The terrain is original: a moor landscape with Branle filaos, a kind of heath.
Mascarin National Botany Conservatory, located on the road up to Les Colimaçons, has all of the island’s endemic species, including various carnivorous, medicinal and odiferous plants.
Fleur de Géranium. Petite-France Maïdo, the hills of Saint-Paul, are famous for the geranium distilleries up there.

The Grand West is an ideal playground for those who are really active. On land, in the sea or up in the air, Reunion is superb for leisure activities and extreme sports… And all this with a breathtaking backdrop and expert qualified guides. Looking for fun and adventure? “Oté, alon bougé“ ! (Let’s get moving!)
ON LANDThe fantastic scenery of the west coast is great for lovers of outdoor activities. A paradise for hikers, the GR (French national public footpaths) and local footpath network are famous the world over. There are many of these paths starting off in La Posses-sion, Saint-Paul, Saint-Leu or Trois Bassins.
Based in Saint-Gilles, numerous clubs offer activities such as climbing, visiting tunnels of lava… There is a forest adventure playground up in the Maïdo
where you can swing from tree to tree. An original way to visit the forest: between five and twelve metres off the ground!
Reunion also has a great reputation among mountain-bikers, with the downhill tracks starting up in the hills in the west – the most famous is the Mégavalanche, an international downhill racing competition which takes place every year, usually at the end of November or beginning of December.
AT SEAActivities out at sea give you an original perspective of Reunion. When out at sea, the view of the west coast is a real treat! All along the coast, in the marinas of Saint-Gilles and Saint-Leu, in the bay of Saint-Paul or even in Le Port (the Mascareignes Nautical Base), there are many companies offering big game fishing outings.Leaving from the port of Saint-Gilles, you can also take glass-bottom boats to observe the undersea world. Dolphin safaris (all year round) and whale-watching outings (from June to October) are also possible, as well as more romantic excursions on a catamaran or old clipper.
Surfing, sailing, water-skiing, jet-skiing, kayaking, wave-skiing, kite-surfing and scuba diving are also on offer along this coast which is almost completely devoted to maritime tourism.
In Saint-Leu, the famous wave known as the «Gauche» attracts the best international surfers for the annual world championships. «La Pointe Trois-Bassins» This spot is well-known for the quality of its waves and attracts both amateur and professional surfers, most notably for international competitions. There are other great spots at the beaches of Boucan-Canot, Roches Noires or Aigrettes.
April 2012 : Yop Surf Reunion Pro, sports and leisure (Trois-Bassins)
IN THE AIRFlying high in the sky or close to the ground, both are possible in Reunion – the best place is in the Grand West…!
To do this, why not give paragliding a go? Up in the hills of Colimaçons in Saint-Leu, or also in Bellemène in the hills of Saint-Paul, or in Dos-d’Âne, in the hills of La Possession – there are several take-off sites for people wishing to try out this amazing sport. Taking off at an altitude of 1000m, you’ll glide across the slopes of the Grand West before landing gently on the beach.
Rides in helicopters, microlites or even motorised paragliders are all possible, making it possible to fly over the lagoon, the cirques or the volcano. Seen from the sky, Reunion is a real gem set in the middle of the Indian Ocean!
French National Paragliding Championships (Saint-Leu) The French Paragliding championships will take place from 6th to 12th November 2011 from the take-off points at Les Colimaçons, and Bellemène with a competitive area stretching from Dos d’âne to Saint-Joseph. Evening entertainments will be provided with demonstrations, stunts, parachutists and a concert every night with restaurants by the Saint-Leu seafront. © Serge Gélabert

Étang-Salé and its beach The coastline of Etang-Salé is first and foremost a magnificent beach of volcanic sand (a mixture of basalt, olivine and coral) stretching along 1.5kms and lined with filaos trees. The beach at Étang-Salé is great for family swims and one of the island’s best surf spots.
Étang-Salé and its wild coastline “Le Gouffre“ is the most impressive place to witness a clash of the elements, as the sea rushes up a natural funnel in the black basalt and then erupts in a fountain of foam. The clearly defined coastal footpath leads from Etang-Salé to Saint-Pierre, great for walking, horse-riding, or even cycling or roller-blading on the cycle path marked “voie verte“.
Étang-Salé and its forest The forest of Etang-salé is a mass of 1,000 hectares made up of filaos trees, blackwoods, Indian tamarinds or even the scarlet flamboyant in December. It’s a popular place for walkers, horse-riders, joggers and mountain-bikers.

Destination… the South!
A promise of sunshine, beaches and wild coastlines lining the Indian Ocean, grandiose mountain landscapes and an extraordinary lifestyle, the south of Reunion is a journey in itself. As a destination, the South offers a break of many qualities: convivial, authentic, festive, exotic, natural and relaxing. All these make up the spirit of the south.
Étang-Salé : between sea and forest
Saint-Louis : the gateway to the South Saint-Louis, from the seashore right up to the highest summits. The Gol factory processes and extracts sugar from cane brought in from the west and south coasts of Reunion. The Domaine de Maison Rouge is a listed historical building and the last coffee plantation of the overseas French territories which has conserved the original lay-out of the buildings, terraces and courtyards. Today it is the home of the MADOI (Museum of Decorative Arts of the Indian Ocean) and the Maison Rouge Agronomic Conservatory. The Etang du Gol is now a protected natural and ornithological reserve. Surrounded by vegetation of aloe, filaos trees, tropical almonds, birdwoods and blackwoods, the site has been equipped with numerous picnic areas.
Saint-Louis, multi-cultural townThere are mosques, Tamil temples, Catholic churches, all co-habiting in harmony.
La Rivière Saint-LouisThis picturesque district of Saint-Louis is considered as the home of woodcraft traditions. Every year for more than 20 years now there is the “Expo Bois” event, an exhibition promoting the work of local craftsmen.
Les Makes, the authentic and innovative side of Reunion Up in the hills of Saint-Louis, the village of Les Makes is well-known as the starting point of some superb walks and hikes, and the exceptio-nal view at “La fenêtre,“ a panorama overlooking the cirque of Cilaos. The Astronomy Observatory of Les Makes, the only one of its kind in the Indian Ocean offers amateur star-gazers a voyage of constellations in the celestial heavens of the southern hemis-phere. ‘Té Mounoir ! détak la fenêtre Les Makes, out zié va marié ansamm z’étoil.’* *’Open up the window in Les Makes, and your eyes will marry the stars.’

Entre-Deux
Nestled between two ravines, the village of Entre-Deux is well-known for its beautiful Creole houses and gardens lovingly cared for by their owners. As part of the Villages Créoles® network, Entre-Deux is one of three villages in Reunion which has managed to preserve its Creole architecture and traditional gardens. Here more than ever you can find delightful and dapper houses, working their charm amidst lush vegetation and slopes leading up to the majestic summit of the Dimitile at 1,800 m. Traditional handcraft based on weaving choca plant leaves and other artistic crafts plays an important part. There are more than twenty craftsmen living in this small village, all happy to open their doors to visitors who are looking to find out all about their know-how.
Tam’s Workshop of the SensesEnter a universe of perfumes with Mémoire D’Sens. An unforgettable olfactory adventure! Nearly 10 years ago, Tam was part of a Perfume-making company in the luxury perfume industry in Paris. Here she honed her skills alongside the very best perfume-makers of the time, and learned the secret of their alchemy. She took part in the creation and launch of several perfumes from some well-known brands: Mess, Hugo Boss, the Serge Lutens collection… Today she is still close to her roots, and happy to share her know-how. A moment of true privilege... Workshops take place on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at the Tourist Office from 9h30 to 11h30.
Saint-Pierre, the capital of the South, seaside resort and festive town.Saint-Pierre (the Sub-Prefecture) is considered as the capital of the South. It was created in 1735 by the Governor Pierre Benoît Dumas who named the town after his first name.
Saint-Pierre, the capital of the South
Buzzing with life, the seafront and the town centre are full of shops, restaurants, hotels, a casino and nightclubs.
Saint-Pierre, Seaside Town
A complete seaside resort, the town has a recently renovated marina offering diverse activities such as scuba diving or big-game fishing. A town with its feet in the water, Saint-Pierre has a lagoon, a beach of white sand and an activity zone called ‘The Beach Gardens’ with green areas, pedestrian alleys and fun water fountains for the kids. Continuing along the seafront and over the bridge crossing the river you’ll come across a little village called “le vieux Terre Sainte” which combines
charm and authenticity, and where life revolves around fishing.
Saint-Pierre and its districts.
The Domaine Vidot is a vast expanse of green belt land located at an altitude of 650 metres, Grand Bois and the ruins of the sugar factory there, and Piton Mont-Vert with its primary forest made up of nearly 65% of endemic species…
Saint-Pierre, Cultural Town
Discover Saint Pierre via guided visits organised by the Heritage Promotion Centre, run by the city hall’s culture department. The wild south is the perfect place to stop-off to discover a kingdom of perfumes and spices, set between the green emerald of its forests and the marine blue of the Indian Ocean. With friends or family, feast your eyes on dreamy beaches or rugged cliffs, and discover a region which is still truly authentic, just like the smile and warm welcome of the locals.
As you wander you’ll come across lots of oppor-tunities to treat your taste buds in table d’hôtes where gastronomic specialties are prepared over a wood fire, mixing the savours of spices and tra-ditionally-cooked vegetables.
Petite-Ile is considered the island’s vegetable garret due to the fertile nature of the soil here, resulting in excellent vegetables and citrus fruit. The village also has a large number of innovative
craftsmen. The road full of craft workshops winds among flower gardens and is a great place to find out all about woodwork, ironwork and objects made of ceramic, bamboo or porcelain. Feast your eyes…
In an idyllic and charming setting, Saint-Joseph has carefully preserved its particular rhythm and way of life. By the sea, it has one of the prettiest bays in Reunion, Manapany les Bains.
These varied landscapes are the real appeal of the hamlets up in the hills: the Creole villages of Grand Coude and La Plaine des Grègues, Jean Petit, Langevin, Grand Galet, Vincendo, la Crête, Jacques Payet and Matouta. At the foot of the slopes of the volcano lies Saint-Philippe, stretching out between the verdant mountain forests and the rugged cliffs hewn by the sea, all the way to the landscape carved out by lava flows from the volcano. Cap Méchant, Mer Cassée, Souffleur d’Arbonne… The coast is dotted with spectacular viewpoints from which one can admire the fantastic nature of the Indian Ocean.
Further to the east is the area around the Piton de la Fournaise known as the ‘Enclos’ (enclosure) where lava flows from the Fournaise have strea-med down, leaving behind a real lesson in the island’s geology.
The Wild South : Sea-spray and fragrances
Nestled in the very heart of the island and gateway to the volcano, La Plaine des Cafres has really unique landscapes on offer compared to the rest of the island. Set between 1,100 and 1,800 metres altitude, La Plaine des Cafres is a succession of increasing levels with a variety of little villages: Piton Hyacinthe, Coin Tranquille, Notre Dame de la Paix…
You have to go through La Plaine des Cafres in order to reach the massif of the Piton de la Fournaise, and then along the forestry road, a place immortalised by a song of Reunionese folklore called ‘Picnic on the Road to the Volcano.’ The road climbs up to an altitude of 2,000m and then arrives at the fantastic lunar landscape of the Plaine des Sables.
Grand-BassinLost at the foot of the Dimitile, where the rivers of Bras-de-Sainte-Suzanne, Bras-sec and Bras-de-la-Plaine all meet, this village is like a miniature Mafate. A patch of land that has been preserved since the dawn of time, it is only accessible on foot for good hikers via a steep footpath shaded by loquat trees. There are hostels there so that you can spend the night before coming back up the next day.
Horse-riding across La Plaine des Sables For horse-riding enthusiasts, visit La Plaine des Sables on horseback.Information: contact the Tourist Office of La Plaine des Cafres .
The Mare Longue Forest Recently classified as a world heritage site by Unesco, Mare Longue is one of the last primary forests at low altitude in all of the Mascarene Islands. It has a natural reserve of 68 hectares. A veritably enchanting patch of nature offering a wealth of colourful woods and other endemic plants (ebony, takamaka, grand natte, bois de pomme…). It really is an exceptional walk along a well-indicated botanic footpath (see below) on offer to nature-lovers keen to discover trees of rare beauty.

Cilaos, a volcanic cirque classified as a Unesco world heritage site. On August 1st 2010, Reunion’s "Pitons, Cirques and remparts" were recognized as natural won-ders and added to the Unesco World Heritage list. A source of pride for Cilaos and for the south of Reunion.
Cilaos, a mountain resort with stunning natural sceneryThe cirque of Cilaos is dominated by the Piton des Neiges, and is the sunniest of the three cirques. The landscape inside it is dotted with "pitons"the most impressive ones being the "Bonnet de Prêtre", the "Piton de Sucre", and the "Morne de Gueule rouge". You can get there by bus or car, admiring breathtaking views all the way along ‘the road of 400 bends.’
On foot, there are a lot more access routes. Among others, there is the footpath over the Col du Taïbit where hikers come in from Mafate and the footpath of the Piton des Neiges, the one path from Cilaos up to the island’s highest summit and from there the Forest of Bélouve or La Plaine des Cafres.
There are numerous ravines which have carved deeply into the landscape of small plateaus hal-fway up the mountains called ‘ilets’, places where man first found refuge in the 18th century: Ilet à Cordes, Bras Sec, and Palmiste Rouge are the most impressive. Due to its exceptional geography, Cilaos has become a real Mecca for hiking-lovers and canyo-ning, climbing and mountain-biking enthusiasts.
Cilaos, authentic and epicurean The traditional wine of Cilaos (red, rosé and white) first appeared during the early years of colonisa-tion. Today around twenty hectares are set aside for three noble grapes: Malbec, Chenin and Pinot Noir. Cilaos lentils are mainly grown around Îlet à Cordes. It’s the cirque’s dry climate and volcanic soil which gives them their particular taste. Culina-
ry enthusiasts love them, and the commune even organizes an annual Lentil Festival in October.
Cilaos
With its pure landscapes, pure fresh air and the regenerative spa waters, Cilaos is a place to re-charge both body and soul. Let yourself be char-med by the beauty of the scenery, the authentic hospitality of the locals and the taste of its culi-nary specialties. ‘Mont Cilaos et ressours’ à ou ek son l’eau ek son band’ montagnes. Le bien-être lé garanti !!!*
*Come up to Cilaos to revitalise yourselves with the water and mountains. Well-being guaranteed !!!
The Cilaos embroidery, also known as the «jours de Cilaos,» is well-known – there is even a little museum dedicated to the art. The waters of Cilaos are good for the health.
The hot water springs known as ‘Véronique’ and ‘Irénée’ come up from the depths of the earth to bubble out at ideal temperatures of 31 and 38° Celsius. A spa has been open there since the 19th century, great for curists and passing visitors alike. There is also a sparkling mineral water, the island’s first.

Taxi drivers who have taken English coursesHere are the contact details of TAXI firms whose director and / or driver can communicate in English after having studied a 30 hour course in 2009 in preparation for the CPCT exam (Professio-nal Taxi Driver Ability). These taxi drivers must not however be considered as bilingual. All the taxi firms on the list are independent taxis - only the GIE PAILLE EN QUEUE is a consortium of independent taxis equipped with a common call number and radio office.

Regulations permit taxi drivers to pick up clients from any commune, providing that a telephone booking has been made in advance. Clients may only be picked up in the street without prior telephone booking in the affiliation zone (commune or specific airport). A client may be dropped off anywhere according to the client’s needs. Taxi drivers (organised as a consortium) may be contacted by telephone.

Canyoning, rafting, mountain-biking, microlite, quad-biking, horse-riding and scuba diving.
If there is one place in Reunion where the island’s melting-pot is most clearly evident, it is here in the east. Religious monuments, architectural or industrial heritage, unusual sites – all these places have helped to build what today makes up the history of the eastern region. The sugar factory, the Colosse temple, the church in Sainte-Anne, Creole houses… Each of these places has its own way to reveal a snapshot of our history – come on your own or be taken round by a local guide!
Saint-André : The charm of the Indian melting-pot
The Mecca of the sugar industry, this commune saw a large number of conscripted workers brought in from India to settle here in the 19th century.
The Tamil culture has left a lasting impression here right up to today. Colourful temples and Indian festivals are everyday sights. This is also the location of one of the island’s main distilleries.
Tamil templesSuperb buildings of bright colours, these many Tamil temples brighten up the landscape of Saint-André. The Colosse in Champ Borne is really worth the detour.
Bras-Panon : the sweet aroma of vanilla
Landscapes of primary forests, plains and valleys, with the soothing green colours of the sugar cane plantations gleaming in the sun.
Bras-Panon is resolutely an agricultural commune, and good food is greatly appreciated: here the vanilla is the culinary king. At each new moon the bichiques fishermen flock to the rivermouths: cari made from this small-fry is the pride and joy of Creole food!
Pools and WaterfallsFor a refreshing outing, either on foot or in the water, Bassin la Mer and Bassin la Paix are the most well-known. Swimming is not supervised. The Cascade du Chien and the Belvédère de l’Eden can be found at the end of a lovely forestry road, with an impressive waterfall and a stunning panorama of the coastline.
21st to 30th October 2011: Dipavali, Dipavali, Festival of Light in the Tamil religion (Parc du Colosse in Saint-André and also in Saint-Pierre, Sainte-Suzanne, Sainte-Marie, Saint-Paul)
In the east there are numerous local foods to satisfy all tastes : vanilla plantations, orchards of lychees, longanis, mango and citrus fruit, chayote plants, watercress, not forgetting of course all the derivative products of sugar cane.
Tables d’hôtes, farm hostels or restaurants will give you a warm welcome with delicious specialties of the east region such as shell stew, bichique (small fry) cari, duck à la vanille or chayote plant pie… The only real difficulty is choosing what to eat among all these delights. And, as we like to say here: ‘Everything begins in the East!’

Located around 40km to the south-east of Saint-Denis, the commune of Saint-Benoît climbs progressively across the Bébour plateau right up to the majestic Piton des Neiges, culminating at 3,071m. Reputed for being one of the island’s rainiest regions, the pools, waterfalls, primary forests, tropical flowers and even spice plants all make the hills of Saint-Benoît an idyllic place for all nature-lovers…
For hiking enthusiasts : • Bassin la Paix and Bassin la Mer : a wonderful place for a refreshing dip surrounded by wild natural beauty. • the coastal footpath : a walk to the sounds of the crashing waves, taking you from the banks of the Rivière des Roches right to the town centre of Beaufonds via the Marine and the Parc de Bourbier. • Grand-Etang : an enchanting stroll amid lush vegetation around the only volcanic lake in Reunion.
• the forest of Sainte-Marguerite : discover indigenous and endemic species in this 160 hectare forest.
For nature-lovers: • The valley of Takamaka : with its world record for precipitation, this deep valley hewn into the land between Bébour and the ocean is a simply unique setting between steep mountains, waterfalls and natural pools. • Bassin Bleu : located in Sainte-Anne, this freshwater pool is an unbeatable place for a dip, as well as a pleasant picnic spot.
But also: the fountain and church in Saint-Benoît, the Hindu temple in Beaufonds, the Notre-Dame de Lourdes Oratory, Creole houses and ‘bichiques’ fishing: a Reunionese tradition that takes place at the river mouths in the East of the island.
Sainte-Rose : A combination of the rough and the smooth Here the flanks of the Fournaise massif meet the headstrong ocean and the often thundering waters of the Rivière de l’Est. Pastural landscapes and abundant vegetation also bring a touch of smoothness.
Marina of Sainte-Rose Recently renovated, this little port now houses a hydroelectric power station.
Bridge over the Rivière de l’Est Held up by hearty steel cables, this bridge can only be crossed on foot.
Anse des CascadesPalm trees, araucarias, ferns, taro plants, orchids and fishing boats defy the wild ocean waves and the crystal waterfalls.
Volcanic lava flows of Notre Dame des LavesWith the black traces at its entrance, the little church of Piton Sainte-Rose will never be able to forget one of the volcano’s more darker rages…
The Fisherman’s FootpathA 15km itinerary along the wild coastline, leaving from the marina at Anse des Cascades, just as pleasant by bike as on foot.
At an altitude of 1000m, nestled in between the forests of Bébour-Bélouve (one of the island’s main primary forests) and the volcanic massif of La Fournaise, this village up in the hills lives to the rhythm of its sublime natural surroundings, its agricultural heritage and its quality of life.
It gets its name from the quantity of endemic Palmistes (Tectiphiala ferox) which were discovered there when the plateau was colonised by man. The majority of the commune is flanked by mountainsides making it feel like a mini-cirque, but the general relief is in fact more of a horse-shoe shape.
At the heart of Reunion’s National Park, La Plaine des Palmistes caters for everyone with the same care: to those sensitive to the local natural riches. To those who like a good cari, either at a picnic or in a good restaurant. To those who, just for a short stay, will visit the cool temperatures of the pretty Creole houses and get a taste of the well-being and soothing way of life.
There is a large number of exceptional sites accessible nearby:
The botanic footpath of Petite Plaine, footpaths to the Cascade Biberon, the Bassin Cadet, Piton des songes, La Pandanaie, le Piton de l’eau and le Piton Textor.
In La Plaine des Palmistes you’ll come across streets filled with rich architectural heritage, consequences of both its local agricultural history and its traditional role as a place for a change of air. The commune has recently been added to the Villages Créoles® label.

The cirque of Salazie is the most accessible of the three cirques, and the whole area is part of the zone classified by Unesco as a world heri-tage site. Well-known for its lush vegetation, its remparts and its waterfalls cascading down the mountainsides, Salazie has a range of magnifi-cent panoramas for the tourist to admire. Thanks to its geography, the cirque has numerous hiking possibilities and treks leading to the neighbouring cirques (Mafate and Cilaos).
Treks leaving from Hell-Bourg : The forest of Bélouve : the higher you climb towards Bélouve, the better the view gets until you reach the top plateau and a panorama of the whole cirque. The Piton d’Anchaing : this site is full of histo-ry, and from the summit you can see the whole cirque in 360°. Terre Plate: a pleasant walk crossing a cryptome-ria forest and a viewpoint over the Creole village of Hell-Bourg. Piton des Neiges: access to the island’s highest summit.
Treks leaving from Grand Ilet La Fenêtre: a medium length walk with a double viewpoint overlooking the cirques of Mafate and Salazie. Plateau fougère The Roche écrite: a more demanding hike, only for regular trekking enthusiasts, culminating in a 2,277m summit overlooking the void and the cirques of Salazie and Mafate: you will be at eye level with the island’s main summits; far on your left the Mazarin and the Bélouve plateau, down below you Salazie and the area surrounding the Piton d’Anchaing. Opposite you there is the Piton des Neiges and the Gros Morne. To your right, the Grand Bénare…
The cirque is also a great place for fa-milies to go out on some great pasto-ral visits such as : The Voile de la Mariée, The three waterfalls,The old spa, The Mare à Poule d’eau,The Mare à Martin

Salazie is also a gateway to the other cirques of Mafate and Cilaos. Note that leaving from the Col des Bœufs is the easiest way to get into Mafate. Salazie is also Reunion at its most authentic, with locals and traditions which have been well-preserved. Hell-Bourg is a member of the association of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. Along with Grand Ilet, this village is also one of the cirque’s two Villages Créoles.® Here you can take a guided tour and learn all about the history of these pretty Creole houses.

Rates• Rates are offered based either on a daily basis with per kilometre surplus or as a package price with unlimited kilometres. Some companies have special offers (weekend, cars with advertising, etc...). The rate per kilometre varies between €0,88 and €2,62 (taxes included), not counting minimum charges, baggage fees and airport supplements.
