Paradise. We have lots to offer and hope you willstay, dine, explore and play!
Sitting at the base of the Sierra Nevadas, we arejust 2 hours north of Sacramento, and a short drive from neighboringcommunities Oroville and Chico. All routes into Paradise offer extra-ordinary views of Butte County.
Aside from the amazing views leading into town, the first thing youwill notice are our trees…we have lots and lots of towering pines, andtheir green year-round color lend our town its mountainous andwoodsy feel, and many of our residents boast their love of our treesas what they love most about Paradise.
We are proud of our rich history, and by following the Skyway upout of Paradise, you will soon discover Magalia where the largest goldnugget on record in California was discovered (54 pounds!). Travelhigher and you’ll enter the “time warp” of Stirling City, a city rich inlogging and industrial history and home to Clotilde Merlo Park (openMay – October).
Our Gold Nugget Museum and Depot Museum both provide learn-ing opportunities about our Ridge’s exciting mining, logging, andrailroad history. You will walk away amazed at the tenacity of earlysettlers and the determination of the crews who built and operatedthe railroad line from Chico to Stirling City in the early 20th century.
We celebrate Paradise all year round: The Gold Nugget Museumhosts Gold Nugget Days every April; our Boys and Girls Club ofParadise host the nationally-awarded Chocolate Fest during Mother’sDay weekend; the Cruisin’ Classics Car Club of Paradise hosts anannual classic car show in June; we celebrate our apple orchard her-itage the first weekend of October every year with our JohnnyAppleseed Days festival, and we celebrate July 4th with a parade andbluegrass music festival…to name only a few of our festivals!
Our Visitor’s Guide provides lots of information about our abun-dance of hiking, biking, golfing and other outdoor opportunities suit-able for all ages and skill levels. PARADISE, CALIFORNIA; is situated approximately twohours north of Sacramento in the foothills of the Sierra
Nevada range. A short drive from the North Valley communitiesof Chico or Oroville leads to the small town of Paradise locatedabove the valley fog and beneath the heavy snows of the Sierra.
Visitors can take a couple of routes to the beautiful “Ridge,” andeach is an equally stunning example of the drastic differences interrain that can take place in a relatively short period of time.
From Highway 70, drivers turn left onto Highway 191, alsoknown as Clark Road, and begin their ascent into Paradise. Thefinal leg of the trip begins on a straight, flat road, bordered oneither side by grasses and grazing cows. Homes and small ranch-es dot the landscape. As the slope of the road begins to rise, trav-elers begin a curving journey with views over the Valley below.First, Scrub Oaks, then Digger Pines, then Ponderosa Pines, andvoila! You’ve reached Paradise!
Clark Road is one of the town’s two main drags. The businessdistrict of Paradise is laid out in more or less of a “grid,” makinggetting around easy, until you try to find someone’s house! Getexcellent directions for that, or stop and ask one of the friendlytown residents.
The second major route to Paradise is the Skyway, accessible offU.S. Highway 99. Once on the Skyway, it’s a short drive toParadise.
Skyway continues long after the paving does, and in a toughtruck with good clearance you might land in Butte Meadows onthe other side of the Ridge.
An old line used to sell properties on the Ridge was “above thefog and below the snow.”This isn’t exactly accurate all of the time, but for the most part it is. The valley below is notorious for thickfog at times of the year—thick enough for you to postpone thattrip to Chico. And, every so often, snow does fall on Paradise, around the 1,500 foot level, when it does, though it’s very rare thatthe snow is so deep that you can’t go about your business. Ofcourse, the further up the hill you go, the deeper the snow can get.
The Spring and Fall in Paradise, and the surrounding area, arespectacular.Wild flowers bloom abundantly, the brown grasses ofsummer become a vibrant green, and colorful trees likeDogwoods and Redbud put on a proud display.
Paradise is an incorporated town with its own police, fire andgovernment. The areas north of the town limits fall within ButteCounty.

Welcometo ParadiseWelcome
to Paradise
IN PREHISTORIC Northern California, a volcanic eruptioncaused such immense lava flows that several “ridges” were cre-
ated. They include: Cohasset, Forest Ranch, and the Paradise Ridge.Eventually, soil covered these lava caps, but from the air, the lavaflows are still very clearly seen as the defining feature of the region.
As for human history, this area was originally populated by theMaidu Indians, and archaeological evidence suggests that their pres-ence here extended as far back as 10,000 years before the arrival ofwhite settlers.
Like many other indigenous people, the Maidu were killed, or diedof diseases new to them, soon after the whites and Chinese flockedto the area in search of golden dreams. This proved to be a reality forsome, but not so for many more, especially the Chinese who weresqueezed out of their claims by discriminatory laws. Many ended upmining gold only as laborers for white miners, or worked in othertrades; as cooks, or launderers. When the Gold Rush ended, a societythat had tolerated the Chinese for their inexpensive labor, now want-ed them to leave. In fact, the Chinese were literally burned out oftheir homes in Chico. In spite of the marvelous Chinese Temple inOroville (lined with gold that Chinese laborers secreted out of themines in spite of the threats of imprisonment or death), much of thevibrant Chinese community disappeared from the area.
Considering it only began in 1848, the Gold rush was relativelyshort-lived, and by 1853, the Paradise area had settled in to the busi-ness of agriculture. Apples, hogs, vegetables and grains all thrived inParadise's red soil. The area, being along a well-traveled stage route, was one of lively exchange between people on their way to Susanvilleor Nevada. Names of these stops still resurface today in the form ofstreet names, or by the nicknames that people still call the areas, such as Toadtown, Dogtown, Coutolenc, Powellton and Inskip.
BY 1861, the town had grown sufficiently as to warrant thebuilding of a school, the Delaplain School. In 1879 the
Congregational Church opened. A post office followed, and by 1880,the census discovered that the population of the Paradise Ridge was301.
More leaps in population were to come, such as 1903, when theDiamond Match Company built a large lumber mill in Stirling City, just up the hill from Magalia. This endeavor was to employ manyresidents for decades.
By 1911 it was time for the post office to move from the Stronghouse, a private residence, and into the Orloff office. It was at thistime that the name of the town was officially changed from Orloff toParadise.8 Paradise Visitor Guide
PARADISE& MAGALIAan abridged history
PARADISE& MAGALIAan abridged history
IN 1916, local farmers began the groundwork for what is knowntoday as the Paradise Irrigation District.
Like everywhere else in the country, the Depression hit Paradisehard. The influx into California portrayed in “Grapes of Wrath”brought it's own poor masses to Paradise. Though there may havebeen no jobs for the people that came, at least the fertile soils yield-ed more food than the dust bowl states, and the migrants could raiseenough to eat. Good times returned with World War II, but manypeople stayed on in Paradise where, like the rest of the country, theybegan to do more than just exist.
1959 came to pass and the most popular festival in town began—Gold Nugget Days. This four-day-long event includes a ball, thecrowning of a queen, a lively parade, craft fair and more. Gold NuggetDays' focus is fun, but also in appreciating the Gold Nugget Museum, located on Pearson Road. This volunteer endeavor has put togetherquite a collection of artifacts from the area's local history. Every year, school children visit and are taught valuable history lessons at thisfacility. Adults join in as well, either as visitors or volunteers. LivingHistory Days is another event that draws crowds to the museum. Each year, volunteers take up a post in the outdoor replica miningtown adjacent to the Museum, and begin demonstrating old crafts, whether it be blacksmithing or candle-making. Yet the highlight ofthe year is Gold Nugget Days, which draws thousands of visitorsfrom all over California.
In the fall, Johnny Appleseed Days is celebrated with craft fairsand food. It's a great chance to get in one last outdoor event justbefore winter sets in.
IN THE 1800s Paradise was the small village and Magalia andStirling City were the hubs. Though it would be difficult to know
which name they went under—there were so many! Magalia was thesign placed over the post office door in 1861, however the area hasbeen called everything from Dogtown to Butte Mills.
It was under the Dogtown name that the largest gold nugget onrecord in California was discovered... a whopping 54 pounds, 49.5 ofwhich was pure gold. It's worth in 1859 dollars was an unheard-of$10,960, which is just a fraction of what it would be worth today. Fora better idea of the sheer mass of this find, see the replica in the GoldNugget Museum.
Magalia was so much busier than Paradise, in fact, they had a postoffice first, and opened their first school in 1859. Even after the GoldRush was over, Magalia sustained a goodly population with its lum-ber and rock mining, up until World War II. After that, Magalia sort

of slowed down, but land prices were inexpensive enough to keepmany people in the area—even if they had to commute to StirlingCity to work at the Diamond Match Company. Magalia's old down-town remains today—just a tiny bit of road called Old Skyway. Theoriginal depot building is on the corner at the signal, and now servesas a restaurant. The Historic Magalia Community Church has beenrestored and stands proudly next to the much larger, newer thrivingcongregation with the same name.Weddings are still held in this tinychapel. Across the street is a well-manicured cemetery. In this area, cemeteries are always wonderful places to look into the past. Many ofthe names in the Paradise Cemetery, for instance, are now immortal-ized in street names, developments, and so forth.
On further up the hill there is more snow in the winter. StirlingCity consists of a school, a post office, splendid Merlo Park and rowsof old company houses. The Stirling City Hotel is still in operation, now as a bed and breakfast. Even higher up is the Inskip Inn. This isthe last spot before the Skyway turns into a dirt road, and is listed onthe National Register of Historic Sites. Perhaps the most interestingthing about this old hotel is that it's rumored to be haunted by aghost named Charlie.
Of all the places on the paved road, Inskip gets the most snow-drifts compared to the more populated areas down the hill. In gener-al, the temperature on the Ridge hovers around 51 degrees inJanuary, and averages 93.6 in July. Above the 2500 foot level, wheresome of Magalia, all of Stirling City and Inskip is located, snow fallsoften, but not constantly. You'll know it’s bad in Stirling City when theroads in Paradise have to be plowed, which is not often. In fact, entireyears may pass without snow dusting the Paradise town proper.
257 days a year are sunny on the Ridge, on average, but when therain does come, watch out! Sometimes unbelievably heavy, the rainseems to fall in sheets. The balance of days are made up of cloudyones. But for a mountain town, 257 days of sunshine isn’t bad at all.
THE RIDGE OF TODAY boasts over 40,000 residents betweenthe town and the areas above it. This number of people has led
to the coming of many institutions seen in larger areas—a DMV,senior center, recreation center, library, and major supermarkets.
Paradise has come a long way since the days when gold called set-tlers here. And it's not through evolving yet. A state-of-the-art audi-torium has been finished, several new businesses have opened, someof them large, such as Rite Aid and Auto Zone. From the single ele-mentary school has grown numerous primary schools, two publicintermediate schools, three private religious schools and ParadiseHigh School.
Paradise is the perfect place for people who want to raise familiesor just live at a pace that will enable them to enjoy life’s benefitsmore!

TRUE TO PARADISE form, our annual 4th of July celebrationtakes the festivities a little beyond the traditional parade!
As a result, our celebration has now become known as the 4th ofJuly Celebration & Bluegrass Festival, and pulls visitors andtourists from all around the state to partake in the fun! The daybegins early with a continental breakfast right up the road at theDogtown Faire celebration in Magalia, then returns to Paradisefor the annual 4th of July parade, complete with horses, floats,
classic cars, clowns, veterans and lots of flags! The parade route winds down the Skyway to Fir
Street where it takes a sharp left turn up to theCommunity Depot Park for an open-air, jammin’blues festival, surrounded by fine art and craft ven-dors selling their hand-crafted items. Come hungryand visit the beer garden, enjoy a tri-tip sandwichlunch or, of course, the All-American Hot Dog! The
party moves further up the road to include more(professional) music in our Performing Arts
Center, preceded by yet more food anddrink in the food court outside the Senior
Center!
VIP tickets are available for those wanting alittle more comfort and service. Watch the
parade and enjoy your lunch and music underthe protection of a VIP tent! Whatever your
plans, secure your lodging early as this week-end is always a sell-out in our local hotels, motels, inns & RV parks!
Truly a family affair, kids of all ages and sizesspend the day on the grass, soaking up the warm NorthernCalifornia sun, complete with an occasional warm breeze, whilelistening to some truly awesome blues - both local musicians andprofessionals conspire to make it an event worth attending!

... plenty of them! Butte County is blessed with a variety of hiking andnature trails. Remember, these are no smoking areas. Leave nothing, take nothing, obey all warning signs. And, whether alone or with some-one, always let someone know where you are going and when to expectyour return. Have a cellular telephone? Take it along.
Bille Park Hiking TrailLocated on Bille Road, one mile west of Skyway. Bille Park dates back to1907 when it was an olive and grape orchard. It has a rich history fol-lowing several sales until 1966 when the property was purchased by theParadise Recreation and Park District. Indian artifacts and dwellingcaves were discovered at the site. The trail is .4 miles, one way. Sectionsof the trail to the canyon overlook are unimproved. Be safe, use caution.
Paradise Memorial Trail WayThis trail is an old railroad right of way which goes the length ofParadise. It is approximately 5 miles, one way. Starting at Skyway andNeal Road, it takes an easy uphill climb to Skyway and Clark Road. Thesection between Fir Street and the end of the trail north is paved, about4 miles. Bicycles are allowed, and there is cross traffic at various loca-tions where the trail crosses major streets.
Fitness Improvement TrailThe Feather River Hospital Fitness Improvement Trail begins across theparking lot of the Health Center. It is a 1.6 mile course with 14 exercisestations. From Skyway, take Pearson Road, crossing Clark Road, to PentzRoad, About 3 miles. Turn left on Pentz Road to the hospital.

Upper Ridge Nature Preserve TrailsThe Upper Ridge Nature Preserve has two major trails and several con-necting trails or scenic loops. Stop by the Paradise Pines PropertyOwners Association recreation village at 14211 Wycliff Way for up-to-date map and trail access information. Take Creston Road off Skyway toWycliff Way, about 1/2 mile.
Lower TrailThe south end of the Lower Trail starts where the gravel section ofPonderosa Way crosses the bridge over Middle Butte Creek at an eleva-tion of just over 1900 feet. From this point the trail follows as close toMiddle Butte Creek as the terrain will permit to about 1/4 mile north of“Lil Falls” where it climbs up through a lava bed and intersects with theupper trail.
The Upper TrailStarts just north of 14452 Colter Way at the south end and runs general-ly north to Colter and Masterson Ways. The elevation at the southentrance is about 2500 feet and drops rapidly through several switch-backs to about 2300 feet. From this point the trail climbs very graduallyto about 2450 feet where it exits on Colter Way.
The Flume TrailStarts at the lower end of Hupp’s Ditch, an abandoned flume, and followsthis ditch to a point about 1/4 mile north of Lil Falls where it joins theUpper Trail. Access to the lower end of the flume trail can be reachedfrom the Lane Court entrance or from the new trail which cuts off of theold Carnegie Trail and follows close the seasonal creek. This new trailprovides a very gradual descent to the lower end of Hupp’s Ditch and isthe more scenic of the two connecting trails. Entrance to the CarnegieTrail is located across from 14464 Carnegie Way. At about the mid-pointof all trails you will find the “Lil Falls” interchange where all of the maintrails join together. The elevation at Lil Falls is about 2100 feet and is oneof the most beautiful spots in the Greenbelt. Plant identification signshave been placed on or near the best specimens of various plants foundalong the trails.
PG&E Flume PathwaysThe PG&E flumes that zig-zag along the Ridge provide pathways along-side. There are three major flumes in use. These are the HendricksCanal, from the Feather River’s West Branch near Stirling City to the DeSabla powerhouse; the Miocene Canal, from the Feather River’s WestBranch near Coutolenc Road to the Lime Saddle powerhouse where thewater is discharged into the Lower Miocene Canal along Highway 70 tothe Coal Canyon powerhouse; and one from Butte Creek below ButteMeadows which goes along the upper Butte Canyon to the De Sabla pow-erhouse. The paths are not policed, and can be dangerous. PG&E ownsthe right-of-way of these flumes and paths but much of them are on pri-vate property. Next to being fun places to hike, the flumes are rich in his-tory. The Miocene Canal pathway is the most popular.Access via the trailbehind the Feather River Hospital, which runs into the path where you’llbe able to stroll over 18-inch wide catwalks. These catwalks run direct-ly over troughs of flowing water where there is no ground for a foot path, use caution. The trail is a healthy 7-mile hike.

WHAT DO YOU CALL a group of people who want something fordecades, and don’t stop until they get it?
The Paradise Performing Arts Center Committee.A 30 year labor of love has become a reality. Finally, after many
years a victorious Paradise Performing Arts Center committee host-ed a gala opening for 800 people. On hand, was long-time supporterand current board member, Mary Ryan.
Ryan remembers, “When we moved to Paradise in 1972, peoplewere talking about needing an auditorium.” In 1978, the real workbegan, an ad-hoc committee was formed,” she said. Then, the practi-cal matter of raising funds began. “We had a hundred dollar a platedinner, we had rummage sales, the typical things you do to raisemoney. In 1979 we formed a non-profit corporation.”Very slowly, the efforts began to pay off. Though, Ryan admits, it was

taking so long that it was difficult not to become a little discouragedoccasionally. Ryan said, “I knew it was going to happen when westarted, or I wouldn’t have stuck with it over the years,”
Community support continued to build, and much of the $2.4 mil-lion total that was eventually raised by 1999, was helping the projectbuild up steam. There was one large$250,000 anonymous gift, $50,000 fromParadise resident, Lois Kroh, and $25,000from Long’s Drugs, and numerous otherbusiness and private supporters. By 1985,the actual structure was finally started.
“The part that was visibly the mostexciting, for me anyway,” Ryan said, “waswhen they put up the framework withthose big cranes and huge pieces ofmetal. That to me was really exciting.”
Between the scores of dedicated peoplewho helped year after year, to the individuals and businesses that
donated funds, the Paradise PerformingArts Center was completed, and openedto wide-eyed and impressed reviews inJanuary 1999. The evening was a hugesuccess, with almost 800 people in atten-dance.
The Paradise Performing Arts Center isa tremendous asset to the Ridge, it wasdesigned for everyone’s use. Today peo-ple from all over the Valley can enjoy thewonderful acoustics and theatrical tech-nology of this world class performingarts center. A concert, a choir, a play will
be greatly enhanced by the state-of-the-art computerized digital sound system, it
offers the latest technology available in the world of sound today. The auditorium seats 769 in plush, comfortable theater seats. Manybear the name of the person who donated the seat, or the name of aloved one, in whose memory it was donated. It may have been years in the building but it was well worth the wait.
The auditorium has been coined the “Jewel of the Foothills”by one ofthe consultants working through the architect.
Ryan feels It’s a very fitting name.“A jewel is something beautiful,” she said. “Something that stands
out.
