DEPARTMENT DETAILS
Music is thriving at CLC, with this large
department’s activities central to College’s
community. Over 800 individual instrumental
lessons occur each week with a total of 44 teaching
staff (8 full-time, 35 visiting specialists) supported
by a full-time administrator. Full-time staff include
the Director of Music, Head of Instrumental Studies,
Head of Academic Music, College Organist and
Heads of four Faculties (Strings, Keyboard, Vocal
and Woodwind, Brass and Percussion).
Facilities for co-curricular music include 30
individual teaching rooms, all equipped with pianos
(along with two harps, one harpsichord, 3 practice
organs and orchestral percussion). There are two
recital rooms containing a Steinway model B,
Yamaha C3 grand, Viscount 2-manual chamber
organ and square piano. Larger concerts are staged
in the main 1000-seat Princess Hall (Steinway
Concert Grand, Yamaha grand and Kenneth Tickell
3-manual pipe organ), the 300-seat Parabola Arts
Centre (Fazioli F278 concert grand) or external
local venues such as Tewkesbury Abbey and Pittville
Pump Room. Dedicated practice facilities exist in all
the boarding houses and College has a total of well
over 100 pianos.
Curriculum Music is taught from year 7 through to
A2 and IB; it becomes a popular option in year 9
and for GCSE. There is a suite of three large
classrooms and one seminar room, equipped with
iMACs running Sibelius and other similar software,
with iPADs/Airplay technology (for direct use by the
students in teaching and sharing of work) and with
traditional classroom instruments. A dedicated music
library serves curricular and co-curricular needs. We
have recently installed a recording studio between
the two main classrooms.
College has around 50 Music Award Holders
although the huge variety of ensembles and activities
available can accommodate almost any interest and
level of ability. These include 2 symphony
orchestras, a string orchestra, a symphonic wind
band, a jazz band, 5 choirs (some led by senior girls)
and 12 chamber groups and assorted ensembles.
There is a large termly entry for ABRSM practical
and theory exams, as well as annual visits for Trinity
and LCM Music Theatre exams. Advanced
instrumentalists take ATCL and LTCL diplomas at
College and can also be entered for ABRSM
diplomas. There are biennial Prize competitions in all
four Faculties as well as internal auditions for Music
Scholarships and Exhibitions; all Award Holders
attend a tailored music enrichment programme on
Saturday mornings.
Each year an extensive programme of concerts is
presented. We also organise biennial European
Tours (performing in venues such as the Duomo,
Florence; San Marco, Venice and the Mezquita,
Cordoba)
