December 30, 2018 Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph 2

Feast of the Holy Family, Year C

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. The celebrations that follow Christmas have a certain logic to them. In a couple of days we will celebrate the maternity of Mary on January 1st, which is a holy day of obligation. This weekend we celebrate the reality that Jesus joined a particular human family. He became man, and also submitted Himself in obedience to a mother and a father, namely Mary and Joseph. One of the things that can make this time special is getting to spend time with our family. But often times the pace and stress can take over, and we can forget why we do what we’re doing. Christmas can also open up old wounds. We have encounters again with people who may have hurt us in the past, including family members. Old grudges and resentments that we’ve been holding onto for years can rise to the surface. If we let it, the Christmas Season can bring healing. If we open our hearts to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph the joy of Christmas can heal our wounded souls. This is part of the power of Christmas and the celebration of the Holy Family. Mary and Joseph knew what stress was. They had to deal with the stresses and anxieties of daily life as well. They also had to deal with serious things as well. Just days away from giving birth to Jesus, the pregnant Mary journeyed to Bethlehem because of the census by Caesar. This journey may have taken up to nine days. As all expectant mothers and fathers tend to worry when their child is so close to being born, I’m sure both Mary and Joseph worried during this journey. And then days after having Jesus, it is revealed to Joseph that they must flee to Egypt, as Herod gave the order to kill all boys two years and younger who lived in or near Bethlehem. Again, I’m sure this worried both Mary and Joseph. Finally, when Jesus was twelve years old, Mary and Joseph lost their child. He was gone for three days. Can you imagine the fear and worry that Mary must have felt? Think about Joseph. He let God down because he couldn’t even protect His Son. Sometimes we can have a sanitized view of the Holy Family, but they were real people. They had real emotions, real worries, and real concerns. What makes them special is that Jesus was at the center of their family, both spiritually and literally. May we keep Jesus at the center of ours. May our families here at Visitation look to the Holy Family this time of year for renewal of mind and spirit, and for strength and comfort during those days when it just feels like everything is coming apart.
