PUT THE “OUTING”

BACK IN “SCOUTING”!

From Faun Guarino:

More studies report the negative effects of minimal time spent outdoors, from the increase in myopia we first reported at roundtable in 2018 (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/03/well/live/nearsightedness-myopia-children.html) to physical ailments.

It’s not just the pandemic that is causing health problems…

Children do not play outside as much as they did decades ago, research indicates. Outdoor play can have benefits for physical health as well as for psychological development. To maximize the benefits, it is worth making a greater effort to provide children with safe and accessible outdoor playtime.

Scouters – THIS IS OUR TIME! Plan your Pack’s summer program. Get your scouts (and their families) ready to explore the great outdoors!

Need ideas for den or pack summer activities? Take science outside:

From solar oven smores (https://desertchica.com/diy-solar-oven-smores-kids-science-experiment/) to creating the biggest bubbles ever (https://tinyurl.com/26sv4kb5) offers lots of cool projects to mystify, entertain, and engage your Scouts!

Add a sprinkle of these activities to your Pack events throughout the summer months:

Make it a science day at the park. Add some exciting experiments to your pack picnic. Take a nature walk with a twist (https://tinyurl.com/eyw494fe).

Be sure to fill out the application for the National Summertime Award for your Pack, dens, and Cubs (https://tinyurl.com/4zdn5jja) and your Cubs for the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award (https://www.scouting.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/512-01319-CS-Outdoor-Activity-Awd_WEB.pdf ).

VENTURING LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Venturing Leadership award recognizes Venturers and Venturing Advisors who have made exceptional contributions to Venturing and who exemplify the Scout Oath and Law.

The Northeast Region Venturing

Officers Association selected two youth and two

adults from the Pequott District as the 2021

recipients of the Area 2 Venturing Leadership

Award.

Congratulations Amritha J. & Julia K. (youth

recipients) and Jennifer O’Brien & Michael Sarlo

(adult recipients), all of Crew 577!

ATTENTION UNIT LEADERS

Do You Need a Certificate of Insurance, especially if your meeting location has changed? A Certificate of Insurance is a document that gives evidence that you have insurance to cover claims for which you may be responsible and are usually required by the operators of the campground or activity your unit is attending, or your unit’s meeting location.

Be sure the activity is not an unauthorized Scouting activity. For fundraising activities, be sure the fundraising application was filed & approved. Requests for certificates must be submitted at least two weeks in advance. Include the following with your request:

• Two certificates are available: either 1-10 million or 6.5-13 million dollars. Ask the facility for whom you need the insurance how much they require & indicate this in your request.

• Ask the facility how their name should be listed on the certificate of insurance, along with their address, and include this with your request.

• Advise what date you need the certificate by.

Send this information to the District Executive, Kristin Lindman, at [email protected].

Note, certificates are NOT issued for Eagle projects.
