Our Curate, Rev Phil Cooke, writes this month… 

Dear friends, The onset of November means that Autumn is well underway. It also means that we’re into what some people call ‘remembrance season’.  It’s a  me when many of us take a par cular moment to remember loved ones who have died in recent or more distant years.  There are a number of par cular dates we also remember and ‘celebrate’ at this  me of year, not least Remembrance Day (Nov 11th) and All Saints day (Nov 1st). And then, of course, there’s Bonfire Night (Nov 5th) which gave rise to this well‐known rhyme: 

‘Remember, Remember the 5th November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.  I see no reason why Gunpowder, Treason  Should ever be forgot.’  

But we don’t only remember in November! We do it all the  me. Birthdays and anniversaries remind us that  me is passing, and also help us remember how special we are to other people. Celebra ng Christmas, Easter and other fes vals also helps us remember the story of Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrec on. 

Remembering is clearly important. It allow us to cherish those memories we treasure; it allows us to be thankful for the  mes we wouldn’t ever change for the world; and it invites us to recall the mistakes of both others and ourselves,  to learn from these and a empt a be er fist of things next  me around.  

Unsurprisingly, perhaps, remembering is also a common theme in the Bible. ‘Remember the poor’ is a par cularly relevant refrain right now with the current refugee crisis and other ongoing world issues – a remembering that properly demands a response of compassion and generosity. At the same  me, God’s people were helped through numerous tough  mes by recalling God’s faithfulness and remembering how he had saved them in the past. Holding on  to this can give us real hope too.  

And let’s not forget that God also has a pre y good memory himself.  One Old Testament prophet explains that He has engraved each of our names in the palms of his hands; the Psalmist reflects that God’s thoughts towards us outnumber even the grains of sand; and Jesus himself tells us that even every hair on our head is numbered. So as we embrace another season of remembering, let’s not forget that God has never forgo en about us, and is longing for the day when we might remember to remember him.

Review of  the Minutes for Hanborough PCC Mee ng on  Monday 14th September 2015. 

1.  Hanborough Methodist Church will be moving into Christchurch for 4 months from the 27th Sept 2015 whilst work happens on the chapel.  They are very welcome. 

2.  Holiday Bible Club was a great success.  We had nearly 80 children, 20 adults and 20 teenagers helping. 

3.  St Peter & St Paul: 700 new guides have been ordered.  The work on replacing the damaged stone in the central aisle is about to commence.  The north and south Porches will be re‐roofed over the winter months. 

4.  Christ Church Cathedral Visit –the Diocese are encouraging all churches to visit the  Cathedral.  It was suggested doing this in the summer months as a benefice summer ou ng which would include a service and a picnic in Christ Church meadow. 

5.  Joint Harvest Supper – 27th Sept 2015. 

6.  Prayer Weekend 25th/27th joint Prayer Weekend. 

7.  Treasurer’s report: The “envelope” money is down but direct giving is up. Parish share is completely paid ahead of  me.  £1072 le  in the 10% Giving Fund.  It was agreed that £800 would go to the Migrant/Refugee appeals (£400 Chris an Aid, £400 to Red Cross).  It was agreed to raise David’s secretarial support. 

8.  Main item – Feedback from poten al new village development  David Mason has formally consulted our PCC on this.  Strong feeling that housing is needed in this area especially at a price people can afford but this development is possibly too big and not properly thought through.   

9.  The wall in the church yard at Christ Church was collapsing and has been rebuilt in a day.  Part of the wall has yet to be capped.

Prayers For Our Community The churches in Hanborough will be focusing some of their  prayers on the community and will be praying for a part of the villages' community each month. This month, the focus of prayer will be Church Hanborough, Mansell Close, Pigeon House Lane  and Lower Road. 

Harvest Lunch Thank You Thank you to all those who came to the shared Hanborough Harvest Lunch at Christ Church the other week.  A collec on was taken for Chris an Aid's refugee appeal and £133.50 was sent (£70 of which was gi  aided).   Many thanks to all who came and to all who gave. 

Remembrance Sunday, Hanborough Parish 8th November 2015, 9.45am A Service of Remembrance, to include uniformed groups, will be held at St Peter & St Paul, Church Hanborough, at 9.45am. The uniformed groups will then march to the War Memorial in Long Hanborough in time for the minute's silence at 11am. All are welcome.

The Fireside Group The Fireside Group is one of several groups and organisa ons in the Benefice of Hanborough and Freeland that always welcomes new members.  

Everyone is welcome to join in at 8pm on Wednesday evenings, when we study the Bible and its applica on to our everyday Chris an lives. Our mee ng place is the home of John & Ann Applegate for whose hospitality we are grateful. 

Autumn 2015: The Stories of King David (part 2) 

This autumn we are looking at the challenges David meets as king.  May we learn ways of coping with those challenges we meet in our lives.  We welcome our speakers, the Revd. Hilary Ewing  for the first  me and the remainder who have  been to the Fireside Group before.

Toddlers at St Mary’s 

St. Mary’s church in Freeland, welcomes all  families and children to join a toddler group with a Chris an theme. There will be toys and ac vi es for children aged 0–4 years and we offer you  me to play and chat with coffee and cakes to enjoy together, all for a small dona on of 50p. 

Toddlers at St Mary’s will be running every Wednesday at 10.00–11.30am, term‐ me only.

The members of the Church and the Community care for one another in all sorts of informal ways and the Pastoral Care Team* assists in the ministry of visiting and prayer. *The Revd.
