SAEINDIA Southern Section is a premier society that serves the cause of mobility
engineering. It is a unique society that includes professional engineers who serve different
OEMS and Suppliers, academia as well as budding engineers (students) who aspire to be
part of the professionally attractive field of mobility engineers. We believe that Mobility
Engineering is a knowledge rich field and that learning and sharing can be fun and
rewarding. To this end, SAEISS organizes several events throughout the year, runs
programmes that enrich and engage and conducts lectures and symposia. It is a part of
SAEINDIA.
SAEINDIA is an affiliate society of SAE International which is head quartered in USA
and has a glorious record of over 100 years of service to the mobility community.

Dear SAE INDIA Southern Section Members,
Greetings from our Management Committee,
The interactions with Mr. Dan Hancock has been inspiring and his 30+ years
association with SAE has been amazing. His interest always goes about STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering & Maths) education and enriching the knowledge of school
children. When he could see the demonstration of School Children in Maharishi Vidhya
Mandhir School, He felt satisfied as his initiatives deliver fruits across the globe.
We had the SAE INDIA Knowledge Round Table (KRT) inauguration at Mahindra
Research Valley. It was a unique event as SAE International President inaugurated the
KRT and handed over the KRT Shield to Dr. Aravind S Bharadwaj, SAE India President as
Chief Technology Officer in Mahindra Research Valley. As requests are flowing from
different corners for the starting of New KRT’s, we have big opportunity to make SAE as a
learning and Knowledge sharing tool across our Section and SAE India.
COLT and Student Convention have been one of the biggest Student Events. COLT was
conducted for the first time in Hyderabad division. It was a mega event organized by our
Hyderabad Division. The Chief Guest for COLT was Mr. C.H. Malla Reddy Member of
Parliament, India.75 SAEINDIA Collegiate club Office bearers from 22 Colleges & 7
Faculty Advisors attended the event. It was well organized by Hyderabad division
members Dr. G.Padmanabham, Chairman , Mr. Srinivasa Rao Y, COLT champion ,
Dr.Gururaj T, Joint secretary, Mr. Venkateshwar R, Dr. M.PawanKumar Y, Scientist RCI.
We request continuous support from SAEISS Members to participate in all events of
SAE India and strengthen Mobility community for knowledge sharing & Learning.

SAE KRT Initiative was successfully Launched at Mahindra & Mahindra
The Chief Guest Of the Program was Mr. Dan Hancock.
KRT : A group of SAE members working in a company forms an environment where they

An overview from this lecture meeting:
• A monitoring and detection system which can alert the driver for component or system
failures that can affect emissions.
• On Board Diagnostic System (OBD) is a system on a vehicle or engine which has capability
of Detecting Malfunctions
• Indicating their occurrence by means of a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
• Identifying the area of these malfunctions by means of diagnostic elements
• Storing the information in computer memory
• Communicating that information off-board

SAEISS Conducted lecture meeting on “Friction Stir Welding In Chassis” on 23rd August’14,
at SAEISS Office by Dr. D. Muruganandam, Professor ,Production Engineering, Sri Sai Ram
Engineering college.
An overview from the lecture meeting:
• The FSW process was conducted on varying the welding process parameters such as
tool rotation speed (RPM), welding speed (mm/min) and tool pin profile by keeping
downward force (kN) constant.
• The properties such as defects, macro and microstructure, micro hardness, tensile and
bend behavior on welded plates were studied.
• A specially shaped tool pin, made from material that have a hard and wear resistant
relative to the material being welded.
• Tests have been conducted on the welded specimen for defects, microstructure, tensile
hardness, and bend behavior on welded plates.

• Dissemination of knowledge gained on fuel cells through a new course “Fuel Cell
Technology”.
• This course bestows a disclosure to the participants towards the up to date state of play
in international research and development in fuel cell energy technology.
• The course takes in hand the issues of environment and energy resources using fuel cell
for small and portable applications.
• Serves as an imminent avenue of improving energy efficiency in fuel cells to enable
designers to develop better designs.
• Enhances in-depth understanding of Proton exchange membrane Fuel cells (PEMFC) for
energy efficiency, performance, safety and economics.
• This underpinning course will follow a line of investigation and progress in Scaling up &
Stacking up of Fuel Cells.

manufacturing process.
• Have a good knowledge of the principles of failure modes like corrosion, friction and
wear, including abrasive, erosive and sliding wear, including the selection of suitable
coating systems.
• Have a detailed knowledge of new coating concepts, including multilayered structures
and functionally gradient materials, together with examples of their major applications.
• Have an appreciation of the microstructural characteristics used to describe materials
and the techniques used to characterize the surface.

effective communication & co-ordination, etc., to purse all the activities of SAEISS
effectively in their collegiate club”
• Various leadership, Communication & motivational sessions are conducted on the Day 1
of COLT program by eminent speakers after the Inauguration. The club officers are also
trained on how to manage the Collegiate Club regular activities in order keep the Club
active throughout the year.
• The Day 2 session was focused on Team Building Activities like Ice Breaking, coin
passing, Traffic jam, etc., to enable the Leadership quality among the young engineers.

engineering, engineering design challenges, and technical theatres are all present in one roof
during these two days. It is SAEINDIA Southern Section's flagship event for students.

AWIM – A World In Motion - KICK OFF 2014
The Inaugural function of “A World In Motion” for the year 2014 was successfully held on
28th July 2014 in Maharishi Vidhya Mandir school, Chetpet, Chennai.
The Chief Guest for this Program was SAE International President Mr. Dan Hancock and
Mr. Murli Iyer.
Award Ceremony: SAEINDIA Southern Section recognized the immense contribution of
Industry members, Teachers for bringing AWIM to such level. Also not forgetting the main
Subject “School Students” are also awarded for their achievements in AWIM nationals 2013.
Glimpses from the event
Born in Indiana, He received his Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering-
from General Motors Institute, Michigan, in 1974 and Master's degree in
mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973.
After joining General Motors in 1968 he held various engineering positions
within Allison Transmission Division, which later became Detroit Diesel Allison
Division in 1994, he was appointed director, transmission engineering, GM
Powertrain and in 1997, he returned to Indianapolis where he was named
President, Allison Transmission Division. Hancock served as chairman of the Society of Automotive
Engineers Foundation Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2008. He served as president of FISITA, the
International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies, from 2004 to 2006. His last position with
GM was Vice President Global Strategic Product Alliances, General Motors Company

MTTP was conducted to train the teachers from participating Schools in AWIM 2014, So that
they will learn how to build the Jet Toy. This will help them to Train the student in their
School.
