TYLER STALEY, EVENT MANAGER
Hello, and welcome to the 2013 Carlisle Bike Fest! I am excited to be hosting my fi rst-ever Bike Fest
here at Carlisle, and I hope everyone enjoys their visit this weekend. I have a variety of interesting displays, events, and bands in mind for this year’s show. When it comes to musical entertainment, we will have a country-themed Friday, a rock-themed Saturday, and then Sunday will feature an interesting blend of blues, rockabilly, surf, and bluegrass bands.
I am excited to have the Monster FreestyleMX, as well as the team of incredible riders, back for 2013. We are also featuring the StarBoyz stunt team in front of the Grand Stand throughout the weekend. Also featured, the incredibly skilled group of dogs and trainers from the Disc-Connected K9s Frisbee team will be wowing you with tricks all weekend. Here to turn up the heat is the one and only Biker Billy, who will be off ering seminars on his unique recipes as well.
For 2013, we are very excited to present our military bike display. A fair amount of our attendees at Bike Fest are veterans of some sort so we are taking this as a special chance to thank you for your service. In front of each bike you will fi nd a bucket for donations to the Wounded Warrior Project. We are taking the time to collect donations and spread the word about this great charity so feel free to stop by the information tent and ask our volunteers about the Wounded Warrior Project.
Brand new for 2013, we are featuring a new area known as “Gears and Grit.” Th is is a special portion of our grounds dedicated to vendors and enthusiasts who are part of the homebuilt lifestyle. We will feature vendors and builders who are dedicated to this style of bike, including J&B Moto, here to do a live build for the weekend. Th ank you for coming to Bike Fest, and enjoy the weekend!

BRADLEY AND ALEX WITH THEIR PROUD PAPA
It’s never too early to introduce your child to the joys of motorcycling. My daughter Alex, now 21, was just
6 when we got her a Honda XR-50. She could already ride a bicycle (a key element) so she didn’t need the training wheels on the motorcycle.
At the time, we had a cabin on Mount Hood in Oregon, and I had two stepson teenagers. I rode an XR-250, as did the older boy, and the younger one was on a 125.
From our front door, we could head out onto logging trails in the Mount Hood National Forest, and for days on end we would start early, pack our lunches, and spend all day exploring. Gasoline capacity was our only limiting factor, and I occasionally had to siphon fuel from the 250 into one of the smaller bikes..
Alex learned from experience. She learned to kick-start the bike, to accelerate and brake with the pack, to be careful with the front brake on gravel, and to also be sure the person following her was in sight, so we didn’t get separated from each other.
Now, 15 years later, I count those days as some of my most memorable on two wheels. Not because we did anything particularly exciting, but because we were together as a family, and heading down new dirt roads every day.
Alex rides a 2006 250 Ninja today, and I’m on my trusty Suzuki SV650. While these aren’t the pair of Ducati monsters we aspire towards, they still provide us an opportunity to be father and daughter, mounted and ready for yet another wonderful adventure, on our motorcycles, together. And now that my son Bradley has reached the age of 6, don’t you think a PW50 would be a good fi rst choice?
Enjoy Carlisle Bike Fest — it’s all about the best way you can be with your friends and experience the open road — on a motorcycle.

14 2013 CARLISLE BIKE FEST CarlisleEvents.com
There are a lot of cool bikes that come to Carlisle each year, some
as part of the general onsite parking, some rat bikes and some that are even better than that as part of the judged bike show. Bikes come onsite, ridden by their owners or via trailers to be placed on display for everyone to admire. No matter how the bikes have gotten to Carlisle, each has a special meaning to its owner or to those who will see them.
Th e bikes here have been built by hand or by major manufactur-ers. Some are kept as original and some are customized, but a common theme found here by riders is their love of riding and their love of the open air. On top of that, many people here this weekend support our troops, ride for a cause or have served themselves. With that in mind, please take a moment to stop by the special Military Bike Display, where they are raising money for the Wounded Warrior Fund. Within the display, you’ll fi nd a very special bike that was born from a father’s love for his son. Th at father is Larry Tremblay Sr. and his son is Joey.
Below, in Larry’s own words, you’ll better understand the history of this great bike and see how many selfl ess people gave time, money, energy and supplies to bring the bike to life.
“I shall never forget the day in April of 2005 when two Marines
came to my home to inform me of the death of my beloved son Joey in Iraq. During the two to three months that followed Joey’s death, an idea formed in my mind to build a tribute to Joey that would make him proud, something that everyone who saw it would always remember Joey and all the other young men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifi ce for their country.
It is in this vein that the Marine (Tribute-Memorial) Bike was started, the same bike that is on display this weekend as part of Carlisle Bike Fest. Th e Marine Bike was built for one, dedicated to a few and in honor of all who have fallen defending our great nation. My son Joey and I used to spend time together watching Jesse James on the Discovery Channel and the Biker Build-Off s. We both enjoyed and admired the skill and talent it took
to build a motorcycle. I thought this would be a great monument to the son I love and miss.
Th ere are many people and companies that have helped this idea come to life. Th e bike you see in front of you this weekend could not have been built without the help, talent and support from many great people. While Joey was my inspiration, I have to recognize the following companies, people and groups in my home area of New York that brought the bike to life: Powder Tech, RPM Choppers, Hannoush Jewelers, Dino Petrocelli, Moto Insanity, JB Grafi x, Richards Military Exchange, Custom Machinery and Stevenson Lumber.
Th ank you for visiting the bike. By doing so, you’ve paid tribute to Joey. You’ve acknowledged his sacrifi ce and you’ve honored his memory.”

One of the greatest parts of this weekend is the eclectic mix of
people, bikes and vendors that you’ll encounter. From two-wheeled enthusiasts to those who rode in on three or even for those who drove here to enjoy the weekend, be sure to check out all the event has to off er.
J&B Moto Company is a big part of this weekend’s Cafe Racer program. Headquartered locally in Wrightsville, PA (about a 30-minute ride off I-83), J&B has come on board to further their passions and showcase their products.
Th e J in J&B stands for Jeff Metz and the B for Brian Leonard. Jeff , who recently left to pursue other ventures, co-founded the company with Brian. Th e two have known each other for more than 20 years, and their shop started in a simple 16-by-16 garage. Th rough hard work and strong word of mouth, the company that launched in 2007 has progressively grown. Services off ered by their shop now include paint, fabrication, body work, maintenance, restoration and overall customization work.
Bike Fest 2013 is their very fi rst time as offi cial partners of the event, but how did J&B get to fi nally be a featured attraction at Carlisle Bike Fest instead of Jeff or Brian walking the grounds as they have in years past?
“Tyler (event manager Tyler Staley) approached us and asked,” said Leonard. “For years, we had been going to a show in Ohio and
it was like a mini-vacation for us. Businesswise, it’s better for us to do business at Carlisle Bike Fest than Ohio. I’d sooner work with a show locally and help if we can and see how it goes.”
While J&B off ers multiple services, is this what they set out to do six years ago?
“I won’t say that it’s what we set out to do,” continued Leonard. “I think we were trying to do more bike building, but off ering the diff erent services kept the money fl owing; more in-and-out jobs helped keep us going. When we were just building bikes for people, it actually got a little tough. While people were interested in our services, so many of them came to us with ideas that either they had or with something that they saw in magazines and I don’t think they realized the time and money that it took to do it. Th at’s where the ‘other’ work and services helped us a lot.”
Like many good businesses too, J&B was built on the backbone of people that were passionate about what they do. Brian had actually been doing paint work for cycle shops for years, but it wasn’t until he started taking his own Cafe Racer bike to shows that people really started to catch on. He directly credits Jeff for encouraging him to show off his personal projects because, according to him, “I just built them and he rode them for me.”
“Catch on, people have,” noted Leonard. “We’ve done work for folks
in Chicago, Florida and points in between. Th e word of mouth among other things has really helped us along.”
“Despite the seemingly nation-wide client base,” Leonard continues, “the farther away a job, the more diffi cult it can be sometimes, just from the simple fact that someone who is local can physically see their project and provide face-to-face input. All of our customers are great, but like any business, when you are dealing with someone and contact is limited to email, photos, etc., it adds a diff erent dynamic to how we go about the build.”
Th e overall diversity of J&B has not only led them to the Bike Fest event this year, it’s allowed them to expand their staff and services too.
“We have seen continued growth with our business. In fact we are looking to add a few more qualifi ed members to our team in the coming weeks and months,” noted Leonard. “We’ll be adding inspection services and want to continue to build on our First Friday program, where enthusiasts can come spend some time at our shop with folks just like them.”
If you’re a big fan of local companies, made-in-the-U.S.A. products and people who work hard and know how to treat a customer, be sure to give J&B some of your time this weekend...and again, see each and every bike vendor onsite. Who knows, they may have something special just for you too!

Riding a bike is a lifestyle choice that is very unique to the theme of this weekend. It doesn’t
matter whether you cruised in on two wheels, three or navigated your daily driver to Carlisle; Carlisle Bike Fest is the go to local destination for open air enthusiasts. Along with being one of the mid-Atlantic’s premier weekends, Carlisle Bike Fest is also very popular with the listeners and followers of one local radio station, 105.7 Th e X. As such, the weekend features a very special Saturday only display and competition centered specifi cally on the station, the riding community and bike fest weekend itself.
Th e X, which prides itself on being central Pennsyl-vania’s only active rock station, has been an area staple for decades. Owned and operated by Cumulus Media, Th e X is also home to one of the longest running local morning programs; the People’s Morning Show (PMS for short). On air since Howard Stern left terres-trial radio in 2005, the show consists of Jen Shade, Earl David Reed and Nipsey. Running from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., the show is very topical and each host has a specifi c set of interests. Earl is a comic, Jen is big into the bike scene and Nipsey…well, he’s a great dad and the whipping boy of both his co-hosts and the programs’ listeners.
Given the particular interests of the talent and large following of their show, Carlisle Events and Th e X formed a partnership in 2011 that is going strong today. Th e partnership sees PMS host weekly contests centered around whatever automotive event happens to be on the schedule for Carlisle. Listeners spend a handful of days submitting photos of their prized ride, then the same listeners and fellow enthusiasts, take a few more days and vote. In general, the machine with the most votes online is named the People’s….Performer, Mustang, Camaro, Mopar, etc. During Bike Fest, however; the contest is even more detailed, involves a longer presence of the station onsite and sees multiple bikes selected online.
As part of the People’s Bike competition, dozens of bikes enter and fi ve advance to the fi nals on Saturday
of Bike Fest. At that point, with rider and popular co-host Jen Shade onsite for four hours, show goers can vote for their favorite bike from the display of fi ve. Th e winner and the others are then recognized and presented with plaques in front of the 105.7 Th e X stage just aft er 2 p.m..
Th e contest has grown immensely in the past two years as well. Last year, hundreds of votes were submitted and the winner edged out second place by a matter of one vote. In addition, the total votes submitted in 2012 were exponentially higher than 2011.
“Partnering with Carlisle Events has been a win-win for us (105.7 Th e X) and them (Carlisle Bike Fest),” said sales rep Rob Simon. “We are able to brand our station in front of an audience that in some cases isn’t already familiar with us and Carlisle Bike Fest gains tremendous exposure via the People’s Morning Show. Best of all, when the fi nal fi ve are unveiled and are put on display here at Carlisle, fellow riders get very excited to see who advanced past the web portion of our contest. It’s even better when we are able to announce a winner and reward them for their hard work.”
“I do a lot of bike themed events, especially during the summer months,” said Shade. “Coming to Carlisle each July is something I always look forward to. Th e event is great, the people are great and the bikes that are part of our contest have always been impressive.” Shade continued, “When you combine the bikes of our contestants with those brought to Carlisle by the tens of thousands of enthusiasts, the weekend really is special.”
As you walk the grounds this weekend and if it isn’t aft er 2 p.m. on Saturday, be sure to see the special X display. Bikes and talent will be here from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20. In the meanwhile, check them out online at www.1057thex.com or simply enjoy the great live music that is playing the stage from now through the end of event weekend!

Koup’s Cycle ShopExcitement and satisfaction were important parts of
Larry Koup’s life. In the 1960s, his motorcycle exploits excited crowds along the East Coast with wins that included the Windber Road Race and the Daytona 200 Sportsman Class. Today his legacy brings satisfaction to hundreds of motorsports enthusiasts in central Pennsylvania through sales and service. Larry, with the help of his father, Ralph, opened Koup’s Cycle Shop in a garage behind their Oberlin, PA, home in 1957. It started as a part-time business selling the Kawasaki and BSA line of motorcycles. Today it’s Koup’s Cycle Shop Inc., with Kawasaki, Suzuki and Ducati motorcy-cles as well as Kawasaki Mules, ATVs and Teryx RUVs and Suzuki ATVs and Scooters. Th e legacy continues with Larry’s son David and Larry’s wife, Zelda. Th e business is still family owned and operated. Over 53 years, Koup’s Cycle Shop has seen many changes in this industry. It has expanded to include a wider number of sport-type vehicles used for transportation, recreation and work use. Apparel, accessories and service are now key elements of the motorcycle store. Koup’s also has a large online presence by off ering motorcycle-related parts and accessories at koups.com. But most important to the Koup’s growth is what hasn’t changed — the owners and staff are still in love with motor-cycles and still provide the friendly customer service, excitement and satisfaction that has been the legacy of Koup’s Cycle Shop. Visit Koup’s at 189 N. Harrisburg St., Harrisburg, PA 17113, call (717) 939-7182 or visit them online at koups.com.
