Beverley Schools Enterprise Adviser Janine Armstrong (CIPD) arranged the Careers Fair for the school. Employers and training providers were invited to talk to students about their industry and the career opportunities available to them. Companies that attended were Topps Tiles, Jury’s Inn, EE, Marks & Spencer, James Cook NHS, ESPA College, Flexi Training and Nigel Carden from SENDIAS. Parents were also invited to attend the event as well as other SEND schools where they took along a small group of students from KTS Academy, Priory Woods and Kirkleatham Hall.

Trevor Tiit, Careers Lead at Beverley School, ‘The quality of presentations by the employers was outstanding with students thoroughly engaged, enjoying themselves and of course gaining a valuable insight into work within a range of sectors. Parental involvement was also an important part of the event with a good level of attendance and again finding valuable information that could help shape their son’s and daughter’s future options.’

Beverley School had their first ever Careers Fair and it was a resounding success!

Case Studies

The career event has built up good leads/contacts in order to work with in the future. All employers enjoyed the event and said they would be willing to work with us again.’

Case Studies

Catcote Academy CPD Event This event was directly supported by Tees Valley Combined Authority, The Careers & Enterprise Company North East Lead Karleen Dowden and Catcote Academy’s Enterprise Adviser Mark Rycraft, who is the Middleton Grange Shopping Centre Manager.

The aim of the event was to upskill and provide continuous professional development for 100 staff members from Catcote Academy.

The event took place Wednesday the 25th April at the academy’s main site. The focus of the event was to raise awareness of the new national careers strategy and more specifically inform staff about the Gatsby Benchmarks. Catcote staff took part in activities in which they worked in teams to look at key aspects of the Gatsby Benchmarks, compared the academy’s current provision against the benchmarks and looked at exploring new innovative ways of embedding the Gatsby Benchmarks further. Following staff feedback from the event, the Catcote careers team are now generating a more detailed careers strategy for the academy as a whole.

BT (Business Direct) have joined forces with Tablet Academy to offer schools and colleges in the Tees Valley area the opportunity to host and take part in a free Computer Science Learning Festival. There are 2 festivals, Computational Thinking Festival and Cyber Safety Festival. As part of the Computational Thinking Festival, teachers and students will gain a core understanding of the main principles of Computer Science. The Cyber Safety Festival focusses on staying safe online and introduces teachers and students to the growing field of cyber security.

Both of these sessions are interactive, informative and fun and those in attendance will have a great opportunity to speak to large companies such as Apple and Microsoft about their technology. As well as been given information about the BT apprenticeship programmes and work placement offers that are currently available.

BT have already worked with numerous schools in Tees Valley: ■ Bishopton PRU

■ Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form

■ Hummersknott Academy

■ High Tunstall College of Science

■ Dyke House School

■ Hartlepool College

■ St Hilds C of E

■ Egglescliffe School

■ Abbey Hill Academy

■ Carmel College

■ Hollis Academy

■ Stockton Sixth Form College

If your school would like to take part in any of the festivals, contact Ian Todd, Senior IT Consultant at [email protected]

Kirkleatham School re launch their on-site caféEnterprise Adviser Victoria Shanks of Hospitality Guaranteed has supported the school with their re launch of their café by helping them create a menu and provide advice on the best ways to run and manage this excellent facility. Through Victoria’s contacts the school has been able to speak to their Local Authority, who have provided further advice and support on hygiene requirements. Students were able to work in the café giving them a real experience of a work opportunity and a paid incentive. A £500 profit was made and the school were able to purchase new garden furniture for the outside area.

Vicky McDermott, CEIAG Lead, ‘We are absolutely delighted with the success of the café, the official launch day was amazing. The students worked so hard and really enjoyed the experience. We couldn’t have done any of this without the support of our Enterprise Adviser and we feel we couldn’t have been given a better match, we love working with Victoria and the partnership is going from strength to strength. She has supported us as a school in many ways and made links for us to other organisations that we would not have been able to make ourselves.’

New Government Careers Strategy: Making the most of everyone’s skills and talents In December 2017, the Department of Education released its new career guidance strategy which includes plans for a high-quality careers programme. From January 2018 schools and colleges should use the eight Gatsby Benchmarks to guide their careers activity provision and the government’s aim is for them to meet all eight benchmarks by 2020.

The strategy is aimed at ensuring young people have the skills they need with a particular focus on STEM subjects.

The Enterprise Adviser Network links directly to the new strategy, which connects local employers to schools and colleges in their area, offering young people meaningful encounters with employers and the workplace, which is having a positive impact.
