Final Exam Basics

Is cumulative, but mostly just for the essay. Otherwise concentrate on the content covered since the midterm

Exam breakdown

• 50%=Essay: choose between 2 topics

- you should be writing for at least an hour on this, fill the exam booklet

- you DO NOT find out the topics beforehand

- you should be referencing material learned since the beginning of the course

- these are NOT slide comparison questions

Exam breakdown

• Other 50%=smaller questions, all on content covered SINCE THE MIDTERM– 20 multiple choice questions, worth 1 pt. each– 10 fill-in-the-blank questions, worth 1 pt. each

– 10 slide IDs, worth 2 pts. Each• These are only on images seen since the midterm• Know artist name, title of work, date (5 year range

before/after), and movement it was part of– Each of these small things is worth 0.5 pt each

Important things to note

• Spelling counts, especially in the last name of the artists and the titles of the works

• Don’t forget about the sound art lecture! And that we studied sound poems like Karawane, and Cage’s 4’33’’; also know terms from the sound art lecture, like plunderphonics

Essay things to think about

• BIG PICTURE seems to be key; have you paid attention since the beginning of the course? Can you synthesize across all the weeks? Relate different artists, artworks and movements across the history of Modern art?

• When you talk about a work in your essay, make sure you mention: – What movement is it part of? What is that

movement about (one sentence?)

– How does this work EXEMPLIFY the movement that it is a part of? How does it fit into its particular movement?

What are the similarities between movements? The differences?

• When you’re discussing the artworks and the movements they’re a part of, make sure you connect them to: – Historical context (what’s going on in history

at the time?)– Cultural context (what are some of the other

cultural movements (ie. literary) going on at the same time?)

– Social context (what is society at the time like? What is it being influenced by?)

– Political context (is there a war going on? How has that affected the movements?)

Examples of potential essay questions

• Drawing on 4 distinct art movements, discuss authorship and the role of the avant-garde

• Drawing on 3-4 distinct art movements, discuss the ways in which women have intervened in the history of modern art
