Workno work under 16

Exceptions include:

Working under an apprenticeship contract, from the age of 15.

Working in a family business supervised by a parent or guardian for occasional or short-duration work with no health or safety risks.

From 14, it is possible to do short periods of light holiday work, of a kind suitable to the child’s age (not, for example, working in a bar), as long as the parents’ permission is given. They can only work during holiday periods of at least 14 days and the child must have at least half the holiday off. Therefore a Saturday job would not be possible under 16.

Customs and

Culture

French cooking is highly refined and involves careful preparation, attention to detail, and the use of fresh ingredients.

You are expected to say 'bonjour' or 'bonsoir' (good morning and good evening) with Monsieur or Madame when entering a shop and 'au revoir' (good-bye) when leaving.

The handshake is a common form of greeting. Friends may greet each other by lightly kissing on the cheeks, once on the left cheek and once on the right cheek.

First names are

reserved for family

and close friends.

You have to wait until

you are invited before

using someone's first

name.

Food is one of the

great passions of the

French people.

The choice of ingredients varies by region and is heavily influenced by what is grown locally.

Hello/ Good morning – Bonjour

Hello/Good evening – Bonsoir

National Anthem La Marseillaise

Customs and Culture

At social gatherings hosts introduce guests, usually starting with the women and then moving

on to the men in a rough

approximation of age order, oldest

to youngest

Greetings on initial meetings will tend to be formal and reserved.

A handshake and direct eye contact are standard.

Address people with their titles plus surname.

Only close friends

and family

members tend to

use first names.

Never jump to first

names terms

without being

invited to.

Close friends may greet each other with an embrace and a kiss on each cheek. Again, wait until the Croatian initiates this form of greeting.

Work in Peru Almost 20% of the children are forced to work as

child labourers to help their family survive. There are many young girls and boys who have

a small box of candy or cigarettes which they sell in the streets.

many of them do not attend school at all. They spend their whole day walking about and selling.

I met a little boy who works as a cobrador (conductor) on a bus in the city of Lima. He told me that he works six days a week from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. For this he earns 40 or 50 Peruvian nuevo sol a week, which is less than €20.

Customs and culture

When introducing themselves for the first time, members of the opposite sex shake hands. Men who know each other well will shake hands or pat each other on the back. Women who know each other will kiss each other on one cheek.

Peruvians use a lot of hand gestures and are animated when they talk. People also stand very close to each other and touch each other. Maintaining eye contact is important.

Peruvians were western-style clothing in urban areas. They tend to dress up when going into public. It is inappropriate to go out of the house wearing dirty or old clothing.

Many couples decide to live together (as opposed to getting married) because of their lack of resources for carrying out both the legal and religious ceremonies.
