From Louis Bricklin - President’s Message Friends,

In “normal” times, I write this letter to you around the fifteenth of the month before you see it. That’s to give our editors, Ed Hoffman and Jill Cooper, time to do their thing before you see it in print come the first of the following month. But for this month’s letter, I asked Ed and Jill for permission to extend my deadline so that there was some chance that what I wrote would not be rendered obsolete by the time you read it. Right now, March 25, as I write this, things are changing by the hour - not by the day, week or month. It occurs to me, however, that maybe that deadline extension was not really necessary. We knew we were in a crisis on March 15. We are today. It appears overwhelmingly likely that we will remain in one when you read this in early April. The purpose of my letters to you over the last two years has generally not been to provide you with previews of “What’s Doing at Beth David,” whether dealing with Covid-19 or anything else. We do that in other places: in this newsletter, in our regular emails and on our Facebook page. Instead, I’ve tried to make this column about what I think Beth David needs to do to remain relevant to and supportive of the members of our community in the years to come. One of the ironies of our current building closure is that it has forced us

to turn the future into now. We have done so remarkably well. Those of you who read this column regularly know that I have suggested that the day will come when the words “member of our community” will substitute for “membership in the synagogue” and when our synagogue building – lovely

as it is -- will become a much less important part of who and what we are. Covid-19 has given us a firm shove in that direction. Now I wouldn’t suggest to you that raising your hand in a Zoom room or singing to an audience of one or two on Shabbat is the same as being there in person. But what I do know from what has gone on for the last month is that - building or not - we will find ways to connect. We have seen record attendance at Friday evening Zoom services, in Zoom small group meetings and at our Zoom Board meeting. We have more tune-ins on our Facebook streaming than ever before – by a lot. We know that there are a number of reasons for this including, “Hey, what else is there to do?” But we also know that when we think creatively, when we think about how to reach you outside of our four walls, we are able to do so in very real and very meaningful ways. Indeed, we’ll probably figure out some new ones even before you read this.

As a result, we will continue to bring our members together Jewishly, to seek and learn and do. I have written before that the communities which succeed in the future will be not those that improve, but those that transform. Covid-19 has forced the beginnings of that transformation upon us. Though there is much in our building to which we will want to return when this is over, we should not lose sight of what we are learning from all of this. “Doing synagogue” and “doing Jewish” can be done in so many ways that never crossed our collective minds before. They don’t all involve a building. We can and we will learn from this, and go forward all the stronger for it. L'shalom Louis p.s. The first week of April we will be sending monthly statements. At Beth David, we have committed to continuing to pay our professionals, employees and bills for as long as we possibly can. If you are able to pay your invoice when it arrives, that would help us immensely. If you are not, and we totally understand, then if you could pay any portion of it that would be greatly appreciated as well. And if you are not able to pay any portion of it at this time, be assured you remain a member of our community. No one has ever lost a place here because of an inability to pay.

The Beth David Monthly is published for use by its members. Feedback is welcome. The deadline for the May/June issue, the last for this season, will be May 15th. There is no guarantee that your submission will be included if it arrives after the deadline. Please send articles to Ed Hoffman, Editor: [email protected]

Rudyard Kipling wrote a moving poem for his son entitled “If.” I paraphrase the first two lines - If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on a pandemic...

My desk chair has a permanent indentation from all of the conference calls and Zoom calls I’ve been on for the last weeks. I got so tired of looking at myself while on Zoom that I changed my background to me being on a beach. It helps...a little. While our building is closed, I go in roughly twice a week. I pick up the mail from the post office and inform Ned of all the things he needs to enter into the system, which he can do from home. He’ll come in once a week to do the banking, along with other items that he cannot do from home, such as sending out yahrzeit reminders. Tony comes in one to two times weekly to check to make sure the building is still in one piece. Betty, our bookkeeper and accounts payable person, is stuck in Florida (there are worse places to be) but hopes her March 31 flight won’t be

cancelled as have all her previous flights. When she returns our vendors will get paid. If she remains in Florida I’ll take care of getting the bills paid. Dena continues to work virtually daily alongside our clergy, who are doing a spectacular job of keeping our community connected.

And I’m so proud that my team is working hard to maintain the business of Beth David. But how do we keep our heads when all about us are losing theirs? I, for one, rely on dogs and take my dog Ziva for a walk every day (when it’s not raining, and staying 6 feet away from the other dog people). We go to Ashbridge Park, where tucked all the way in the back is Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. I snapped a few photos, the contents of which bring me great joy...and a much needed smile. So I’m sharing with you one of these photos and the caption that goes with it. I hope they, too, bring a smile to your face. Stay safe and be well. Jill [email protected]

College kids home? Not this college dog who is taking a break between two drooling graduate school courses. Ziva, the college dog, is majoring in social distancing - not social work.

From Jill Cooper, Executive Director

A Message from Beth David Regarding Our Blood Drive

For the reasons set out in the announcement on the opposite page from the Red Cross, we have elected to re-open our building on April 12 for the sole purpose of permitting the Red Cross to use our facilities for its blood drive. You should know that the building has been virtually empty since we closed it on March 12, which means that no cleaning has been done since that time nor will any be done before April 12. Conversely, only one or two people have been in the social hall where the drive will be conducted, and we have no reason to believe any of them are infected. After reading the information provided by the Red Cross you should make your own personal decision weighing the needs and risks involved. Obviously, those over 60 years of age or with pre-existing medical conditions should consider those facts in making their decision.

Blood Drive

As COVID-19 containment efforts continue nationwide, officials are asking to limit non-essential mass gatherings as much as possible. Please note that American Red Cross blood drives are essential and in direct support to other emergency services remaining open, to sustain our fight against coronavirus and those most vulnerable to it: patients with chronic ill-ness or disease. It is imperative that we collect every unit we can, as over 6,000 blood drives and 200,000 donations have been cancelled in recent days. A severe shortage of blood puts doctors in the position of having to choose which patient gets the lifesaving blood.

You can still go out and give blood. We’re worried about potential blood shortages in the future. Social distancing does not have to mean social disengagement.

~ US Surgeon General, Jerome Adams We understand public health concerns, but want to stress that donating blood is a safe process and Red Cross blood drives have the highest safety standards. Here are just a few of our vigilant measures to protect the health of all involved in our blood drives.
