Credit Recovery: Students who need to recover credit for previously failed courses may be scheduled in courses that do not exceed a total of 2.0 credits at a given time. If students complete a credit recovery course prior to the midway point of summer extended learning (July 8, 2020), they may then be scheduled in another credit recovery course as long as they do not exceed a total of 2.0 credits. A final mark must first appear in the Aspen SIS before additional credit recovery courses can be scheduled. Original Credit: Fourth year or higher potential 2020 summer graduates may be scheduled in one original credit course (1.0 credit or 0.5 credit). Original credit is not for acceleration.

Combination of Credit Recovery and Original Credit: Fourth year or higher potential graduates cannot be scheduled in more than 2.0 credits of credit recovery and original credit. SECONDARY SUMMER LEARNING PPROGRAM GENERAL INFORMATION
ELIGIBLE STUDENTS The Secondary Summer Extended Learning Program is for current DCPS students (SY2019-2020) enrolled in grades 6-12. Non-resident students who paid non-resident tuition during the 2019-2020 SY (August-June) are eligible to register and be scheduled in courses. Students who did not attend DCPS during the 2019-2020 school year are not eligible for the Summer Extended Learning Program.
FEES AND EXPENSES
DCPS summer extended learning is free for all eligible students.
REGISTRATION AND SCHEDULING

• When scheduling students, school Counselors should review academic records to ensure that students are scheduled in the correct summer extended learning courses.
CANCELLATION OF COURSES DCPS reserves the right to cancel virtual courses with insufficient number of students scheduled. Virtual courses must have a minimum of 10 students. In the event of course cancelation, the student may be scheduled in another section of the canceled course, in a different course if applicable, or in course at another virtual site.

Secondary Summer Learning FAQs
1. Is there a student orientation prior to the start of the Secondary Summer Extended Learning Program?
Yes! Students who have been scheduled in remediation or enrichment courses are required to attend a virtual
orientation on June 19, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. Students will be introduced to the virtual site’s summer leadership and staff
and provided critical information that will lead to a successful experience over the course of the Summer Extended
Learning Program.
2. Are all students eligible for all course offerings? Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to recover credit for courses failed that are required for graduation. Credit recovery
provides an additional opportunity for students to gain a complete comprehension of course material after they have
failed a full 120-hour, one credit course or a 60-hour, half-credit course.
Original credit courses are primarily for potential 4th year or higher potential summer graduates who have never
previously taken the graduation requirement course. Potential summer graduates can be scheduled in only one original
credit course over the summer.
Students in grades 6-8 who have been retained at the conclusion of the school year will have the opportunity to be
scheduled in any of core content areas course required for promotion that they failed during the school year. Middle
grade students who need additional time and support in any of the four core content areas can be scheduled in
academic enrichment, seat availability pending.
Summer extended learning courses serve students who require additional time, support, and instruction to remain on
track for promotion or graduation.
3. How many courses can high school students be scheduled in at one time? Students in grades 9-12 may be scheduled in courses that total up to two (2) credits in credit recovery courses at a time.
If a student completes a credit recovery course prior to the midpoint of the high school extended learning program (July
8, 2020), he/she may be scheduled in an additional credit recover course(s) permitting that the student’s scheduled does
not exceed 2.0 credits.
Students who are scheduled in one original credit course and additional credit recovery courses cannot exceed a
maximum of 2.0 credits. Scheduling is subject to Counselor approval based on a review of the student’s current
progress toward promotion and graduation in addition to staffing considerations.
4. Are all DCPS secondary school students eligible to participate in summer extended learning?
DCPS’s Secondary Summer Extended Learning Program offerings are designed to meet different student needs and are
geared toward students who need additional support to remain on track to promotion and graduation. Question 1
provides additional information about each program. Please reach out to your school Counselor for information about
which program and site will best serve your child’s needs.
5. Does DCPS offer any summer afternoon programs for secondary students? No. There will be no DCPS centrally managed afternoon programs for secondary students in 2020.
12
6. My middle school child is being retained. Are they required to attend summer extended learning?
Middle school students who are retained for the failure to meet promotion criteria based on their academic
performance and/or attendance will have the option to attend summer extended learning. School teams and families
will determine if retained students either are scheduled in summer learning or repeats their current grade during the
next school year.
Please contact your child’s school counselor if you have questions about the promotion/retention policy.
7. My child receives special education services. Can I enroll him/her in DCPS virtual secondary extended learning?
Yes! Depending on the student’s IEP and progress toward promotion and graduation, students who receive special
education services may be enrolled in the Secondary Summer Extended Learning Program at their assigned school, or in
the Extended School Year (ESY) program.
ESY services which are provided in accordance with a modified IEP are distinct from summer extended learning
programs which offer generalized content on a predetermined schedule. Students with disabilities are provided with
necessary accommodations and modifications to access the general curriculum and receive instruction in summer
extended learning.
ESY services are provided through a modified IEP and are intended to focus on critical skill development. The IEP team
annually determines the students who are eligible for ESY or summer extended learning programming. These
considerations should include the student’s counselor.
8. My student is an English learner. Can I enroll him/her in DCPS secondary summer school?
Yes! English Learners in grades 6-12 may enroll in the Secondary Summer School Program. EL students may enroll in any traditional summer school program. As part of instruction, EL students will experience differentiation based on their individual English Language Proficiency (ELP) level.
If EL students meet the required criteria for the English Learner Summer Academic Program (ELSAP), English learners may enroll in the High School English Learner Summer Academic Program (HS-ELSAP), the Middle School English Learner Summer Academic Program (MS-ELSAP), or the Elementary English Learner Summer Academic Program (ES-ELSAP).
For the HS-ELSAP, students must complete registration forms with their bilingual/school counselors and/or ESL teachers, discuss course selection with their counselors before final course selection is approved and enrollment occurs. The HS-ELSAP provides a rigorous academic program while supporting the students’ progress in English language development. Students who participate in HS-ELSAP develop greater English proficiency, advance through courses and grade levels, and are positioned for success as they work toward high school graduation. Questions can be addressed to [email protected].
MS-ELSAP is a program for English Learner students who are rising 6th through 8th graders. Students with WIDA level 1.0 to Level 2.5 are encouraged to enroll in an intensive language program designed specifically for middle school English Learners. Students who are currently taking English as a Second Language (ESL) classes or receiving ESL supports are welcome to join the English Learner Summer Academic Program (ELSAP). ELSAP provides a rigorous academic program while supporting students’ progress in English language development. Interested students should register by visiting https://dcps.dc.gov/summer or reach out to Nicole Ugel at [email protected] with any questions.

9. My child is not a DCPS student. Can I enroll him/her in DCPS summer extended learning? No. Only students enrolled in DCPS for School Year 2019-2020 are eligible for the Secondary Summer Extended Learning Program.
10. My child is not a DC resident. Can I enroll him/her in DCPS summer extended learning? If the non-resident student is currently enrolled in a DCPS secondary school for SY2019-2020 and has paid non-resident
tuition, then he/she can be scheduled in summer extended learning courses.
11. What is the daily summer extended learning schedule? Students’ schedules will vary depending on the number and type of courses in which the student is scheduled. Please
check with school counselors to if you have questions about your child’s summer schedule.
12. How large are virtual summer extended learning classes? Class sizes range based on student demand. Secondary summer extended learning classes must have at least 10
students to remain open and can enroll no more than 20 students. ESY class sizes are in accordance with the Division of
Specialized Instruction’s classroom ratio.
13. What is the secondary summer extended learning program attendance policy? Due to the change to virtual learning, students will no longer be penalized for non-attendance and teachers will use
different methods to track student engagement. Summer Administrators will address attendance during student
orientation on June 19, 2020. Where can I learn more about DCPS’ Summer Extended Learning Program?
For additional information about DCPS’s secondary summer extended learning offerings, please do not hesitate to
contact your school counselor. You can also find information on DCPS’s website at https://dcps.dc.gov/summer.
