BLOOD DONORDAY- WHAT’SIT TAKE?Thanks to our LifeServers, this year’s KCCI Blood Donor Day in Des Moines was a huge success! 679 donors came out to roll up their sleeve and make a meaningful contribution to their community. Enough blood was collected to save more than 2,000 hospital patients. (For scale, that’s the population of Rockwell City, Iowa!)

What does it take to pull off such a huge blood drive?

Several departments worked together to plan this massive blood drive.

“Blood Donor Day is our biggest blood drive of the year. It takes almost every department at LifeServe to put on the big day but it’s always well worth it,” Marketing Manager Danielle West said. “We always see a dip in donations during the summer months and Blood Donor Day helps us boost the supply, which was much needed this year!”

It’s not just extra manpower that makes the Blood Donor Day machine run; lots of stuff gets involved, too. We handed out more than 650 bottles of water to refresh our donors and found out which snacks are among LifeServer favorites! Here’s how many of each snack option we went through:

• 400 bags of Nutter Butters• 300 bags of Chips Ahoy• 150 bags of white cheddar popcorn• 150 Rice Krispie treats• 100 bags of Ruffles • 100 bags of Oreos• 50 granola bars

Perhaps the most daunting Blood Donor Day task was handled by our loyal volunteers: folding nearly 1,000 shirts for donors, team members and sponsors. A special thanks goes to those dedicated volunteers!

Blood Donor Day wouldn’t have been successful without KCCI News 8. From creating commercials to shooting and airing interviews leading up to the blood drive, their promotion helped us let donors know about our critical need for blood! A special thanks to the KCCI news team who broadcast live from Blood Donor Day and chatted with our LifeServers all day long.

As soon as Blood Donor Day wrapped up, the planning process started all over again for Sioux City’s KTIV Blood Donor Day, generously sponsored by KTIV News 4 and Mercy Medical Center! That drive was also a huge success; surpassing their goal and collecting enough blood to save almost 450 lives!

Thank you to everyone involved!

Technology changes so fast it’s hard to keep up with sometimes: new phones and tablets, new apps, new everything! At LifeServe Blood Center, we’re proud to keep on the cutting edge of technology with our blood collection devices.

If you’ve given platelets, plasma or double red cells, you’ve experienced automation on either our Alyx or Trima device. LifeServe’s Sioux City location has been utilizing the Trima device since 2004, but they are new within the past two years to Fort Dodge, Mason City, Marshalltown, Urbandale and Des Moines. This automated device has the ability to collect the individual components of our blood (red blood cells, plasma, platelets or a combination of all three). The functionality of the device provides blood products that are ready for transfusion once the blood testing has been finalized.

“Both the Trima and Alyx devices allow us to collect individual components during the donation process. This is called pre-filtration,” said Anjeanette Barto, Director of Donor Services. “Because the devices separate out the components into individual bags, the time spent by our laboratory professionals to finalize the processing steps is cut down significantly.”

Time isn’t just saved for LifeServe’s laboratory team; LifeServers can expect less time in the donor chair. A double red cell donation can now be collected in 25 minutes; a 10 minute cutoff from our previous devices. Saved time is a definite benefit, but perhaps the biggest advantage to the Alyx and Trima devices is what they mean for hospital patients.

“These machines give a consistent dose of product that can be given to patients in need,” Barto explained. “Whole blood donation red cell counts fluctuate based on hemoglobin and hematocrit. If those are high, more red cells are collected than plasma. If hemoglobin and hematocrit are low, more plasma is collected. On an automated device, a consistent unit is given, which is important it providing a consistent dose to our patients.”

Now is the time to find out what donation type is best for you! We have four donation options for LifeServers: whole blood, double red cell, platelet and plasma. Cancer patients can receive up to eight platelet units per week. Burn victims use up to 20 plasma units. Trauma situations can need 50 red blood cell units at one time.

If you’re interested in learning more about making your donation pack a punch through automation, visit our website or call 800.287.4903.

LifeServe’s Latest Technology

A few years ago we introduced you to Mason, an Iowa boy with two rare, life-threatening diseases that only affect one in one million males. Following his diagnosis at just two years of age, Mason received at least four lifesaving blood transfusions and a bone marrow transplant.

Today, Mason is healthy and enjoys eating pizza and cereal, is obsessed with reptiles and could color or play with his dogs all day. Mom Tiffany also mentions that Mason likes to pick on his older brother!

It’s because of generous blood donors that Mason is doing so well. He receives plasma-protein therapies for his immune system that are made from lifesaving plasma donations. Thanks, LifeServers!

Remember Mason?

SCHOLARSHIP MONEY AVAILABLE!Tired of filling out applications and writing essays to earn scholarship money? You read it right: LifeServe Blood Center is offering scholarship money to high school and college students, and our scholarship experience is much different!

High school and college students who organize a blood drive in their community can score $500 to put toward school! Students will bolster their real-world skills such as leadership, event planning, and communication as they work to earn money for school and give back to the community.

A LifeServe territory representative will work closely with scholarship students to ensure a positive experience and successful blood drive. Students need to meet a pre-designated donor total to earn their scholarship, but it’s definitely doable.

UPDATED SIOUX CITY FACILITY IN THE WORKS!LifeServe Blood Center is excited to break ground on its new all-encompassing facility in Sioux City! The facility will include a an updated and advanced blood processing center to continue to ensure a safe blood supply for hospital patients in need. With the new building located on Line Drive, LifeServe is consolidating locations and selling its downtown Sioux City office space and former donor center, located at 1019 Jones Street.

The Jones Street facility currently serves as LifeServe’s western Iowa blood processing center, administrative office space and blood distribution center, which will all be included in the Line Drive location. The Line Drive building that’s being enhanced currently houses LifeServe Blood Center’s blood collection vehicles and materials for mobile blood drives.

Plans to enhance and add on to the Line Drive location are already underway. That includes expanding and repurposing existing space.

Blood donors will not be impacted by this move. Sioux City LifeServers can continue to donate at the Sioux City Donor Center, located at 4501 Southern Hills Drive. The donor center moved out of Jones Street and into that location in 2010.
