COMPETITION GUIDELINES



WELCOME Congratulations on earning the opportunity to attend the first-ever virtual DECA International Career Development Conference. Your hard work, dedication and passion for DECA have led you to both great achievements and the opportunity to represent your chapter and chartered association at this #NextLevel of competition! Prepare yourself by reviewing the important information in this packet as it pertains to your competitive event. Keep in mind that ICDC competition may be conducted differently than at your association level, so please review all instructions in detail and ask your chapter advisor if you have any questions. As one of our key guiding principles, DECA members are poised professionals with ethics, integrity and high standards, and conducting oneself in a virtual environment is no different. As you compete, please uphold your personal integrity and ethics while also presenting yourself professionally. Our volunteer business professionals will be looking for you to shine, and we want you to represent yourself, your school, your association and the DECA brand in the stellar way we know you can. During this virtual conference, continue to prepare for college and career success by applying your classroom learning and career aspirations to your performance in DECA’s prestigious competitive events program. BRIEFING FROM KNOWLEDGE MATTERS SENT APRIL 13 We know that competitors, DECA advisors, and parents are excited about the upcoming DECA Virtual Business Challenge (VBC) Finals. Due to COVID, DECA’s ICDC is being held virtually, and we’ve put together the DECA VBC Finals in a remote format vs. the head-to-head, live competition that we usually run at ICDC. We wanted to let you know how the DECA VBC Finals event will run virtually, with some live streaming via Zoom. There will be two rounds of competition. Instead of the 15-minute live rounds, the first round of the VBC Finals will be 24 hours long, and the second round will be 8 hours long. VBC winners will be determined by a combined, cumulative score between rounds 1 and 2. During the two rounds, you can run the sim as many times as you would like. Only your best score will be counted. The first round is April 20th (see below for the full schedule), and the second round is April 24th. The Accounting competition rounds are shorter in length, and in addition to the two competition rounds, there will be a final round for the top eight teams and ties. For the Accounting competition only, scores for Round 1 & 2 will be the team’s rank in each round. Their cumulative score will be the sum of the ranks with the lower score being better. (See schedule below). When each VBC track begins (see schedule below for start times) competitors will log into the Virtual Business competition remotely at vb.KnowledgeMatters.com via their laptop or desktop - the same as you did for the two online qualifying rounds. Upon logging in to your Virtual Business account, you will see the DECA ICDC Finals course for your competition track listed under the list of your course names. You will click on the course name in order to access the competition page. Once on the competition page, you will be able to click the “Run Sim” link to launch the competition simulation file. Once you complete the file, you can work through it again by clicking on the “Try Again” link. The exact name of your course will be listed below with the competition start time information. The courses are being added to the qualifiers’ Virtual Business accounts throughout this week. All qualifiers should be able to see their DECA ICDC Finals course under their accounts by April 19th. As with the two VBC qualifying rounds, one team member can be logged into the sim at one time. If a second team member tries to log in, they will receive a message indicating that the original team member needs to relinquish control for them to log in. After the second round on April 24th, we’ll announce the top 8 finishers, but we will not announce the order of the top 3 winners. DECA will announce the top 3 winners during the DECA ICDC Awards Ceremony.



Knowledge Matters will offer technical support and answer questions during the VBC Finals via email. All support questions should be emailed to [email protected] We can’t answer questions about the simulations themselves, but we will answer any tech support questions that you might have. We recommend that teams save and submit their sim files at least 5 minutes before the end of each round.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS DECA members must agree to abide by the rules and code of conduct set forth by DECA Inc. and Knowledge Matters.

Competitors in the Virtual Business Challenge will compete in multiple rounds of their respective online simulation. All session times below are listed in EST. ACCOUNTING VBCAC Round 1 | Starts at 6:00 p.m. on 4/20/2021. Ends at 8:00 p.m. on 4/20/2021. Round 2 | Starts at 6:00 p.m. on 4/21/2021. Ends at 8:00 p.m. on 4/21/2021. Round 3 | Starts at 1:00 p.m. on 4/24/2021. Ends at 3:00 p.m. on 4/24/2021. For each competition round, students will be given access to one simulation competition file. The ICDC competition rounds will be just like the qualifying rounds where you will open the simulation file and look for the three forensic errors (out of a number of choices) present in a business. Once the three issues are selected, the submission is final. Teams with all correct answers will be ranked in order of submission time (earliest first), followed by teams with one wrong answer (also by order of submission). Your scores from rounds one and two will be combined to determine the top eight teams. The top eight teams will then participate in round three (the final round).

Your score will be your personal net worth in the simulation. Your scores from both rounds will be combined to determine the winners, which will be announced at the Grand Awards Session on Thursday, May 6 beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

FASHION VBCFA Round 1 | Starts at 2:00 p.m. on 4/20/2021. Ends at 2:00 p.m. on 4/21/2021. Round 2 | Starts at 12:00 p.m. on 4/24/2021. Ends at 8:00 p.m. on 4/24/2021. During the competition round, you will be able to work through the competition simulation file as many times as you'd like. Only your highest score will count. Your score will be your total profit in the simulation. Your scores from both rounds will be combined to determine the winners, which will be announced at the Grand Awards Session on Thursday, May 6 beginning at 8 p.m. ET. DECA HOTEL CHALLENGE VBCHM Round 1 | Starts at 1:40 p.m. on 4/20/2021. Ends at 1:40 p.m. on 4/21/2021. Round 2 | Starts at 11:40 a.m. on 4/24/2021. Ends at 7:40 p.m. on 4/24/2021. During the competition round, you will be able to work through the competition simulation file as many times as you'd like. Only your highest score will count. Your score will be your balanced scorecard score in the simulation. Your scores from both rounds will be combined to determine the winners, which will be announced at the Grand Awards Session on Thursday, May 6 beginning at 8 p.m. ET. PERSONAL FINANCE VBCPF Round 1 | Starts at 12:40 p.m. on 4/20/2021. Ends at 12:40 p.m. on 4/21/2021. Round 2 | Starts at 10:40 a.m. on 4/24/2021. Ends at 6:40 p.m. on 4/24/2021. During the competition round, you will be able to work through the competition simulation file as many times as you'd like. Only your highest score will count. Your score will be your personal net worth in the simulation. Your scores from both rounds will be combined to determine the winners, which will be announced at the Grand Awards Session on Thursday, May 6 beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
