Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Closed Saturdays during: July and August "Some of Town of Islip ' s Early History ," written and illustrated by George L. Weeks , Jr., Islip town historian , has just been published in a limited edition of 350 copies. The book has 160 pages with an attractive format and binding. Two copies are now on our shelves; one for reference , the.other for circu- lation: This book will answer in part the constant requests for ma- terial on local history as it is the first book dealing only with the history of Islip township. Mr. Weeks not. only gives excerpts from many early town meetings Jmt describes the feats of famous local personalities and genealogical data of early settlers. Jesse Merritt , Nassau County historian , says in his foreword that the origin of the word Islip is not Indian , also that Mr. Weeks has lived on the south side long enough to earn the title of " clamdigger. " . Islip was named for the birthplace , in England , of William Nicholl, the first settler. According to Mr. Weeks , Mr. Nicholl purchased the land from Winnequaheagh, Sachem of the Conetcjuot Indian tribe and called it "Islip Grange. " The genealogy of the Edwards family of Sayville is one of the first listed in Mr. Weeks ' book. He says that the old Edwards burying ground was located 50 rods south of Edwards Street. (We have child- hood memories of playing here and have often wondered if any of the stones are still in existence). Mr. Weeks devotes considerable space to the famous yachtsmen who resided in Islip town. He says that Capt. Leander Jeffrey, born in 1848, was regarded as the most prominent yachtsman of his day. Capt. Nathaniel Clock, Capt. "Hank" Haff , Capt. Urias Rhodes and Capt. Samuel Gibson were others whose noteworthy sailing abilities made them famous in na- tional and international yachting. Ships which had their " watery graves on the beach ," church his- tory , folklore , taverns , summer ho- tels, and the oyster industry are all related by Mr. Weeks. Sayville, its settlers and bits of history, is mentioned in the book many times; in fact , the closing chapter is about the history of the Sayville Hose Company. Mr. Weeks ' book shows a broad knowledge of local history and he presents it in an interesting style. ...TEL. SAY. 4-0200 or 4-0333 G. H. Hlldebrandt , of Hamburg, N. "Some of Town of Islip's EarlyHistory ," written and illustratedby George L. Weeks , Jr., Islip townhistorian , has just been publishedin a limited edition of 350 copies. The book has 160 pages with anattractive format and binding. Twocopies are now on our shelves; onefor reference , the.other for circu-lation: This book will answer inpart the constant requests for ma-terial on local history as it is thefirst book dealing only with thehistory of Islip township. Mr.Weeks not. only gives excerptsfrom many early town meetings Jmtdescribes the feats of famous localpersonalities and genealogical dataof early settlers.

Jesse Merritt , Nassau Countyhistorian , says in his foreword thatthe origin of the word Islip is notIndian , also that Mr. Weeks haslived on the south side long enoughto earn the title of "clamdigger.".Islip was named for the birthplace ,in England , of William Nicholl, thefirst settler. According to Mr.Weeks, Mr. Nicholl purchased theland from Winnequaheagh, Sachemof the Conetcjuot Indian tribe andcalled it "Islip Grange."

The genealogy of the Edwards

family of Sayville is one of the firstlisted in Mr. Weeks' book. He saysthat the old Edwards buryingground was located 50 rods southof Edwards Street. (We have child-hood memories of playing here andhave often wondered if any of thestones are still in existence).

Mr. Weeks devotes considerablespace to the famous yachtsmen whoresided in Islip town. He says thatCapt. Leander Jeffrey, born in1848, was regarded as the mostprominent yachtsman of his day.Capt. Nathaniel Clock, Capt."Hank" Haff , Capt. Urias Rhodesand Capt. Samuel Gibson wereothers whose noteworthy sailingabilities made them famous in na-tional and international yachting.

Ships which had their "waterygraves on the beach ," church his-tory , folklore, taverns , summer ho-tels, and the oyster industry areall related by Mr. Weeks. Sayville, its settlers and bits of history, ismentioned in the book many times;in fact , the closing chapter is aboutthe history of the Sayville HoseCompany.

Mr. Weeks' book shows a broadknowledge of local history and hepresents it in an interesting style.
