London 1923. The First World War has been over for five years, but the effects are still being felt all round the metropolis. A socialite and politician’s wife prepares for one of her famous parties while somewhere else in the city an old friend contemplates the pain of past and present love, a war veteran struggles with his inner demons, and other characters live out the uncertainties and dramas of post-war English society. All touch each other in some way with their actions, directly or obliquely, in Virginia Woolf’s ground-breaking and celebrated portrait of a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway.

You have an important event to plan – e.g. a wedding, a party with
important guests, a media event, or product launch...
You are working with an event planner.
Write to the planner (220-260 words), giving them a brief
description of the event, the kind of guests you are inviting and
telling them about the practical details they need to cover.
Think also about the kind of atmosphere you want to create and
what you want people to say about the event afterwards.

VIRGINIA WOOLF MRS DALLOWAY
STAGE 5C1YOUNG ADULT READERS
HOW ULYSSES INFLUENCED MRS. DALLOWAYJames Joyce’s Ulysses was published in 1922, three years before Mrs. Dalloway. However, when Joyce’s novel came out, Woolf wrote in her journal that it was “an illiterate, underbred book.” In spite of this, in writing Mrs. Dalloway, she also uses Ulysses’ experimental nature, deleting what she did not appreciate of it. Both books evolve in a single day in June, both have two story structures with two major characters, and both use language to dip in and out of people’s heads and move fluidly through time. Probably, Mrs. Dalloway would not be the same if Virginia Woolf hadn’t read Ulysses.
