As part of 'National Mathematical Year 2012', Vigyan Prasar and NationalCouncil for Science & Technology Communication, DST, have initiated a seriesof programmes and activities to create interest in mathematics, especiallyamong students. The activities started in 2012 will continue this year as wellbecause the year 2013 has been declared as the year of the 'Mathematics ofPlanet Earth (MPE)'. More them 100 scientific societies, research institutionsand organisation across the world have come together to dedicate 2013 as aspecial year of the 'Mathematics of Planet Earth' (MPE 2013). MPE 2013 isan effort at creating awareness of the role mathematical sciences play inunderstanding and dealing with the multi-disciplinary and multifaceted challengesbeing faced by our civilisation as denizens of planet Earth.

Over the past one-and-half years, some of the activities undertaken by VPinclude publication of books and special biographical articles on the life andwork of great mathematicians in Dream 2047 and VIPNET News. An exhibitionwith about 25 posters on "Mathematics and India" was developed speciallyfor the 100th Indian Science Congress as main theme displayed during thecentenary session of ISCA in Kolkata. The National Lecture Series: "Legacy inScience Prof S Chandrasekhar (1910-2010) and Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-2012)" received enthusiastic response across the country. The lecture serieswas organised at 50 places, which included lectures on astronomy andmathematics, screening of documentary on Prof S. Chandrasekhar and quizprogrammes. A series of workshops/seminars for mediapersons were also organised to create awarenessabout mathematics and its importance in our dailylife. A number of partners and collaborators wereassociated with this initiative like the Press Club ofIndia, local Press Clubs, professional mediaorganisations and educational institutions. At allplaces these workshops received excellent mediacoverage.

As new initiative, VP in collaboration with NCSTCand AIR is producing a new radio serial on the lifeand work of some selected mathematicians titled'Anko Ke Khiladi'. The serial is being produced in19 Indian languages including English, which willbe broadcast from 117 radio station of AIR. Thebroadcast of the serial will start in month of October.For more details like exact time and dates, clubmembers may visit the website of Vigyan Prasar(www.vigyanprasar.gov.in) or contact the local radiostation of their respective places.

The basic objective of the serial is to createinterest in mathematics among the children, to bespecific, and to make them aware about theimportance of mathematics in understanding thesecrets of nature and in solving practical problemsand in advancing the frontier of human knowledge.It is also expected that the serial would help inmitigating the widespread math phobia from theminds of children and increase the appreciation ofmathematics in daily life.

The serial covers the life and work of 23mathematicians. Two brainstorming sessions havealready been organised in Delhi and Bengaluru inMay and June 2013 for finalising the content andthe treatment of each episode. To make the serialmore entertaining, some interesting anecdotes andincidents from the personal lives of the selectedmathematicians have been included in each episode.One of the main highlights of the serial is to realisehow mathematics is an essential life-skill for all ofus which not only helps us in solving many real-lifeproblems but also helps us to develop a logicalthinking process as well.

After the first introductory episode, twoepisodes will be dedicated to Srinivasa Ramanujan,highlighting his original contributions to mathematic.The next two episodes will be on ancient andmedieval mathematics and mathematicians. The list

of mathematicians included in the serial is given inBox -III. The broadcast schedule (language wise)may be as per Box I.

A registration of about 35,000 committedlisteners will also be done. Each committed listenerwill not only have a chance to get a prize for thegiving corrected answers for questions , which willbe put up at the end of each episode, but he/shewill also get an activity kit and a poster. For eachlanguage, about 2,000 committed listeners will beregistered. The registration will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. Each listener will have an optionto register her/himself either on-line or through postby sending information as given in Box IV.

IntroductionAbout 80% of children of our country, who enrolin primary school, do not cross the Senior SecondaryCourse (SSC) barrier. It is not that these childrenare unfit for education; in fact, they are the majorwork force for India. They start small enterprises,work on farms, or work as skilled workforce tosecure their livelihood. They probably dropped outof school because our book-based education systemdid not suit them and they lost interest in alleducation. Very often, the thought of schoolingand examination system frightens them.

The country is faced with a large proportion ofschool dropouts and a corresponding problem ofunemployment and under-performance in theunorganised sector. In the present changing worldscenario, this is a great hurdle to the progress of acountry. There is need of a system by which theproblem can be treated at the grass root level. Oneof the causes of this dropout problem is that oureducation system is almost entirely book based anda large section of the students, both during andafter schooling, find what they are taughtincomprehensible and irrelevant to get jobs and selfemployment.

In this context, the National Institute of OpenSchooling (NIOS) is a unique education model withits inherent flexibilities and an innovation to linkeducation with livelihood. From a small project ofthe CBSE for out-of-school population and second-chance learners, it has grown today to be the largestopen schooling system of the world and has beenhailed as a mega open school. It is not only a

National Board with the authority to examine andcertify learners, but also a National ResourceOrganisation for open schooling. NIOS is alsooffering Vocational Education and Training (VET)courses in different areas such as agriculture, healthand paramedical, business and commerce,engineering and technology, home science,hospitality management, computers and IT.Knowledge, skills and quality of entrepreneurshiphave been made essential components in the curriculafor VET, with emphasis on practical and on-the-jobtraining in related industrial units and organisations.

Realising the need of hour a multi-skilled coursenamely “Diploma in Basic Rural Technology (DBRT)”has been launched by NIOS. This is a multi-disciplinary program, aimed at exposing the learnerto a variety of skills. Learners will work in variousareas like health, agricultural and animal husbandry,rural engineering, energy, and home environment.The course opens the door to modern technologyfor the youth, allowing them to form their preferencesand know their aptitudes thus enabling them tochoose a career. It also improves their self-imageand gives them confidence and hope for the future.The level of training, though basic, empowers themto start their own enterprise after a short (less thana year) stint with another enterprise in the field.

The course outlineThe DBRT course is based on philosophy of“Learning while doing’. Students get training byworking in real life environment. The learner alsolearn basic skills like drawing, costing and projectplanning. The main objectives of the course are totrain the youngsters for income generation throughself-employment and entrepreneurship development.

The eligibility criteria for admission to the Diplomain Basic Rural Technology is 8th pass and the courseduration is 2 years. The course fee for this courseis Rs.4,000.00 and the admission is done twice ayear as per the dates notified by the NIOS. Thecourse curriculum comprises of four modules havingboth theory and practical components.

Module - 4 Our home environment (homeenvironment and basics of electricity)

Modules 1 and 2 impart skills related to healthand livelihood security. Modules 3 and 4 impartskills related to construction, drawing, and basicsof electricity. The study materials are available inthe form of self-instructional print material (Englishor Hindi) and the practical component/training isbeing provided by the study centres.

The course is offered through AccreditedVocational Institutes (AVIs), otherwise known asStudy Centres of NIOS where facilities forconducting the programme are available. The AVI isresponsible for imparting skills and competencies ofa qualitative standard by adopting suitable trainingand learning methods. The AVI has to provide face-to-face interaction (theory counselling) and hands-on experience (practical classes) to the learners.Even registered NGO having three years’ auditcertification / academic institutes/ corporate bodiescan apply to NIOS for becoming an AccreditedVocational Institute by paying Rs.5,000.00 asaccreditation fee. The accreditation fee is exemptedfor Government Institutes/ organisations. NIOSallows AVIs to retain 80% of the course fee towardsproviding of training infrastructure, organisingpracticals and facilitating learning. Out of 20% ofstudents’ fee, NIOS provides books (study material,especially designed for open and distance learningmode), identity cards to students and conductsexaminations and issues certificates to successfullearners. Career pathwaysAfter completion of DBRT, the students can doapprenticeship in an area of their interest and developtheir career. Multi-skilling helps in getting job inworkshops in small-scale industries/constructionsites/fabrication units or as a supervisor in agricultureand polyhouses or animal husbandry units such aspoultry, dairy, goat farming, etc. They may alsowork in food processing industries or electric andelectronics workshops. One may even start one’sown enterprise after sufficient apprenticeship.

World Environment Day-2013Mithila Public School, R.B. Nagar, Bhadreshwar,Araria, Bihar, celebrated World Environment Day

on 5 June, 2013 at MithilaPublic School on theme ‘Think,Eat, Save’ as given by UN. Thecelebration started with specialassembly and principaldelivered a lecturer on balanced

diet & proper utilization of food stuff. The studentsalso prepared a project on the theme and createdawareness among the villagers through posters.Slogan, essay writing competition and a quiz werethe special features of the programme.

Poster MakingDr. S. Radhakrishnan Foundation School, Tuibuong,Churachandpur, Manipur organized many activitiesincluding poster making, debate, workshop,Mathematics Competition, Drawing Competitionduring April 2012 to June 2013.

Health Care Day OrganisedA series of programme and activities were organisedby Him Science Club, Him Academy Public School,Hamirpur, HimachalPradesh during themonth of May2013. On 10thMay, Health CareDay was observedand a number of medical plants were shown tochildren from the nursery of the school like Tulsi,Ginger, Mint and Aloevera, Bramhi. The use ofthese medical plant in diseases like Asthma, Caughand Cold, Acidity were also discussed.

Biodiversity week from May 21th to 24, 2013was also observed by organised fancy dresscompetition. A visit to water-treatment plant forstudent were also organised.

Padayatra from Hubli to DharwadPadayatra was organised by Adarsha Yuva Balaga,Bhairidevarakoppa, Hubli, Karnataka. More then 100

youth participated inthis and covered adistance of about 20Km. passing throughsmall villages likeClnakal Navanagar,Gamanagathi etc. For

the Padayatra, a number of new slogans were coinedand pamphlets containing information onEnvironment were distributed among the people.

A Drama Nisarga Nayaya was also staged indifferent places in which about 35 studentsparticipated. About 6000 people watched the play.
