CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE: I was thinking hard about where to begin this message as I have by circumstance found myself having to fill some very large riding boots! The huge mantle of Mike Milner-Smyth was very ably taken on by Andy and just when we thought we were settled with that more change is occurring. I thought I would start off my tenure in this role by just pointing out some of the issues which are with us and where I stand on those. We have very successfully survived the move from Morningside to the VVC and I believe that in the longer term this is absolutely the correct thing for the club. Once the building alterations are complete VMC will feel even more at home in the clubhouse and there will be opportunities and facilities that were not possible at Morningside. I am wearing two hats at the moment but want to assure you that all I do in the context of the VMC will be in the best interests of its members and I hope you will always feel free to engage with me should you ever feel that that there is an issue which in not in keeping with that philosophy. We have a competent and dedicated committee and I believe I can depend on their support in the months ahead. There is always a need for new blood in any organisation and my main message this time is for everyone to give some thought as to who could come onto the committee and bring fresh ideas and energy to it as that is so important in making clubs such as ours sustainable. Until next month safe and happy riding and lets enjoy the summer on our machines. Ian Holmes

Let’s make sure that every ride in 2014 is as well attended. Despite the rain there was a good turnout for the October Club night and it was nice to see Gavin Walton looking much better and making good progress. The Chairman’s cocktail party on the 9th of December. A well-attended event by both members and their spouses/partners. Some great food thanks to the VVC ladies and more showing of the great JD video. An enjoyable evening was had by all. Again a vote of thanks to Roly who did the organisation

Odds and Ends: Mystery of the Traub Motorcycle Submitted by Gavin Walton: In 1967, a plumber doing renovations of an apartment building outside Chicago tore down a brick wall and found what would prove to be a baffling mystery to vintage motorcycle enthusiasts - a one-of-a-kind motorcycle bearing 1917 plates and the name "Traub". The buildings elderly owner admitted that his son had stolen the bike before going off to WWI, never to return. But where the bike came from and who made it remains unknown to this day.

Currently residing in the Wheels through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, the Traub is considered by many to not only be the rarest motorcycle in their collection, but in the world. The Traub was sold to Torillo Tacchi, a bicycle shop owner in Chicago after its discovery who later sold it to Bud Ekins - famous as Steve McQueen's stuntman - while Ekins was on set of the Blues Brothers movie in the late 1970s. The Traub was later sold to collector and restorer, Richard Morris, who then sold it to Wheels Through Time Museum curator, Dale Walksler, in 1990. It has been on permanent display in the museum ever since. Don't think this unique motorcycle is merely a museum piece though. Walksler rides the Traub fairly regularly. When asked about the engine components, he enthusiastically replied, Everything inside the engine is just magnificent. The pistons are handmade, and have gap-less cast iron rings, the engineering and machining being simply years ahead of their time.

"When comparing other top motorcycle makes and models of the era, the Traub has no equal. Comprised of a sand-cast, hand-built, 80 cubic-inch "side valve" engine, the machine has the ability to reach speeds in excess of 85 mph with ease," says Walksler. Aside from its few off-the-shelf components, the Traub has many unique handmade features. The three-speed transmission is thought to be one of the first of its kind and the rear brake, a dual-acting system that employs a single cam that is responsible for pushing an internal set of shoes, while pulling an external set, has never been seen on any other American motorcycle.

"For a machine to have such advanced features, unparalleled by other motorcycles of the same era, is truly outstanding," said Walksler. "It's my opinion that The Traub was an attempt at a new breed of motorcycle. But how on earth could a machine have been produced in such great form, with capabilities that far exceed that of any comparable machine, without the knowledge of the rest of the motorcycle industry during that time." The hunt for the Traub's elusive origin hasn't stopped. "While we may never know why the machine was placed behind that wall, we do hope to one day find out more about its history and the genius that created it," said Walksler.

Assistance required The following email received via Jaws, the webmaster from Graham Watson: Hi John I trust this correspondence finds you well, I was wondering if you can assist me. I sold a very sentimental Matchless G80 500 single (Est. 1956) to one of your entrants in 2010. The guy contacted me in 2011 advising he would be doing the DJ that year …….unfortunately I lost his number and have been searching for him since. I would like to get hold of him ……….I know it is very vague but there are not many G80 Machines around , can perhaps help. Your assistance would be appreciated. If anyone can help Graham please email him on [email protected] Email received from Mick Skelly, Hello Andy, Greetings from the West Coast. Some years ago I was chatting to Eroll Herbert, and he said he was thinking about putting something together, and the history of motorcycle racing in SA .Do you know if anyone has continued with this task, since he passed away. I have always been interested in different engine designs and lay outs and it seems motorcycles have tried them all. The people behind these machines have always intrigued me. In the 70 there was a machine on the race tracks called a Konig. I looked it up on the Internet and got some background on the story, and was fascinated enough to order a DVD on the life of the New Zealander, Kim Newcombe. This may of course be common knowledge to everyone else but it was not to me. The DVD is called "love, speed and loss". The determination of this young man can only be admired. Then about a week ago I was out shopping for an outboard for a small sailing boat. After some discussions with Dudley, in Paarden Island, he inquired if I was anti 2 stroke. I informed him that the only reason I mowed the lawn on a Saturday, was to get a whiff of a two stroke. He then shared with me that he collected 2 stroke outboard motors, and added that he had, Yamahas Evenrudes Westbends, and Konigs. I stopped dead in my tracks. Konig -I had to see them. Dudley's eyes sparkled when he sensed my enthusiasm, and off we went to the store at the back of the shop, where his mechanical marvels were kept. There were 3 off there. Never thought I would see one of these motors again. After Dudley dragged me back into the shop, I assured him that if I ever was to buy an outboard, I would be buying it from him. Which brings me to the point of this letter. I the 70's there was a Konig that raced at Kyalami. I remember the rider was Jim Peters. His nickname as I recall was Jungle. I was a young lad at the time and spannered a Trident for a mate of mine. The way I saw the situation, then, was that Peters must have busted his butt to get the bike to SA. Can't remember how successful he was. I remember the guys saying they had to warm up the bike before they put in the cooling water; otherwise it would just leak out. They also saved a bit of money in track fees, by lifting the bike over the pit wall, and getting in some free practice laps. In '79 I saw a couple of Konig engines in side-car outfits at the Isle of Man. So, the question is, does anyone know where that bike is now? Is Jim Peters still around. Perhaps a member can shed some light on this. Best regards, Mick Skelly

Email received from Pierre de Villiers. Good day I am looking for some help to get a ‘59 Sunbeam S8 running again. The bike is in 98% condition and even starts (although I haven’t started it recently) I also have some spares. Can you please direct me to someone in Johannesburg that might have a look and possibly work on it? I believe the problem is something relatively simple. The bike is in Athol (just down the road from your clubhouse). Your help is much appreciated. Regards, Pierre 082 330 0993 Interesting ad from ‘Flatout riding’

THE 2014 MacGREGOR MALUTI MEANDER HOSTED BY SARRA AND ASSISTED BY THE FOURIESBURG COUNTRY INN. 19TH TO 23RD MARCH 2014 This is number two of the very successful first MacGregor Maluti Meander. This time we will be based at the Fouriesburg Country Inn, where our hosts Clive and Martie Craig promise us a memorable stay with their fine cuisine, superb South African wines and homely atmosphere. The inn’s specialty is lamb-on-the-spit, served with traditional “potbrood and vetkoek” in the boma. The mountain Kingdom of Lesotho beckons you. Fouriesburg Country Inn is the gateway to Lesotho, situated only 10 kms’ from the border post. On Thursday the 20th we offer a tour to Katse Dam, the highest dam wall in Africa. This tour is a must for those of you who want to drive over three magnificent passes, the highest being the Mafika Lisiu Pass at 3090 meters. The photographic beauty will astound you. A lodge, which overlooks the dam, provides a well-deserved lunch. Join this tour and you will be on your way to a great breath-taking adventure at what nature can do. Friday the 21st (a public holiday), and Saturday the 22nd will be regularity rally days. The format of the rally will cater for competitors from five disciplines, being open odo for cars 1988 and older, sealed instruments for cars 1988 and older, open odo for cars 1988 to present, BNRC for cars of any age, and bikes of any age. The route will be based loosely on the world famous Monte Style rally. A method of regularity rallying that allows the competitor to enjoy the spectacular scenery, with short bursts of regularity rallying along the way. Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Maluti Mountains of the north-eastern Free State lies the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, which derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on the park’s sandstone cliffs, especially the imposing Brandwag rock. Ribbokkop, the highest point in the park, reveals a breath-taking tapestry of red, yellow and purple hues as its warm shades merge with the cool mountain shadows, and our route will take you by means of a special permit to parts of these mountains not seen by many. Ample time will be given for photo opportunities. Excelsior, a small town established in 1910 by farmers is one of the towns the rally will be visiting. The farmers at the time had to decide on which farm the town would be established. The two

farms were Sunshine and Excelsior (Latin), which, translated to English means higher up, and was chosen due to its higher location. Clocolan, established in 1906, is also on the route. The Basotho called the place Hlohlowane, which means get up and fight. Competitors from the five disciplines will compete against each other in their respective categories, and prizes will be awarded in each category. Cost of the event will be as follows. Rally and 3 night’s accommodation for two, all meals included R4800.00 (excludes Katse Dam tour). Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd. Depart Sunday 23rd. It’s that time of year again, and preparations for the 39th annual Cars in the Park are underway. This show will be held at Alexander Park, Pietermaritzburg on 18 May 2014. The first CITP focussed on what were considered ‘old cars’. However, as time goes by, the show has evolved to include more modern and even brand new cars. Last year a wide variety of different vehicles were on display. What is classified as an ‘old car’ is a rolling date, and to some, even the nineties is 'so last century'! Nevertheless the emphasis will always be on showing ‘interesting’ cars. This year we would like to try something special, and include as part of the showcase, cars that were made in about the same year as their owners became interested in cars! This will be a tribute to the changing times and could help educate the younger generations about the days before air bags, ABS, EDS, Brake Assist, and collision mitigation, when you actually had to be able to drive to be allowed behind a steering wheel! We are often attracted to the cars that remind us of our youth, so we are hoping that some of you have bought back the cars that are about the same age that you are, regardless of your age! Among these cars, we are hoping to see some Pontiacs, Mercury’s and especially an Arrol Johnson or a Trojan. If you own a ‘car of your youth’ please bring it along, and if you feel ‘in the spirit’, dress according to the times! (Be it the times of roaring twenties, Frank Sinatra, James Dean or Elvis). Also bring along period accessories (not just the owners) such as fascinators, walking sticks, portable record players, wicker picnic hampers or whatever else reminds you of your youth. There will be judging and prizes for the best dressed! Not to ignore technology, we would also like to include any fabulous exotica not usually seen on the streets of PMB .like Hotrods and Muscle Cars. Muscle Cars were also plentiful in CITP 2013 and many keen supporters came to admire some superb workmanship, and absorb those spine tingling rumbles. And what would early CITP exhibitors make of the modern Super Car? Owners of such cars are welcome to join us as an individual or as part of a club. We are still looking for McLarens, and a Morgan (e.g. 2013 three wheeler), Lamborghinis, Porsches, Maseratis, Ferraris and any others that are available. These are always popular, regardless of age. The entry process was streamlined last year, and many complimented the new approach, despite the odd glitch. To register this year all you have to do is to tell me, by early April 2014, roughly how many vehicles your group will bring and in which colour coded area you parked last year. I will send you the stickers. We do not need licence plate numbers and such detail. The simple colour stickers will make entry and parking easier for all. We just need to make the zones big enough. The coloured stickers help the marshals direct you smoothly and quickly to your favourite zone. The sooner you respond with attendance figures the sooner we can get the stickers to you. We understand that exact vehicle information may be fuzzy as restorations run over time, and old cars break down, but good estimates make life easier for all. On arrival settle in your display spot, meander down to the registration tent, sign a form, collect a display card briefly describing its provenance, and collect a memento for the day. That’s it. Relax and enjoy the day. Our regular traders will attend, with perhaps a few new ones. The Park Inn will be there along with a sit down refreshment area operated by Rotary. We are also hoping to have a ‘big screen’ showing nostalgic motoring videos to set the mood. With your support we look forward to a repeat of last year’s happy and interesting car show. Feel free to contact me, Fred Rascher, on: [email protected] or 083 369 7020 Hosted by the Vintage Sports Car Club Pietermaritzburg in Association with Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg.

SAVVA Technical Tip 80 – A very special tool It’s Christmas time and most clubs don’t publish a newsletter for December, so for those that do, I think we can take a bit of license. This tip is aimed at us oldies who:

a. cannot afford to go on holiday, or who b. can afford to go on holiday but don’t want to.

The tool in question is a “must have” for those of us who have a tendency to drop nuts, bolts and spanners down past the engine or other vital innards. As most of us have experienced - when things fall, two things happen:

1. For some unknown reason, they disappear, never to be seen again, or 2. they roll midway under the car where one has to lie flat on ones tummy to retrieve them.

It’s the latter we will address, the problem of getting up and down. Before starting on a project you should arm yourself with the special tool pictured below, commonly referred to as a “broom”. When spanners, nuts and bolts etc. fall down under the car one takes the broom and “sweeps” the offending item to the side of the vehicle where it can be easily retrieved. I have a friend who is a bit smarter than me and has gone one step further and developed a stick with a magnet attached to the end which enables him to retrieve the items from the floor or that are stuck halfway down the engine bay. They say ’necessity is the mother of all inventions”. May you and your loved ones have a Merry Christmas a great New Year. Happy motoring in 2014.

There is always a shortage of articles for publication in Kickstart. If you have anything you feel would be of interest to members please jot it down and send it in – don’t worry about the layout, grammar, spelling or anything like that – just send it in!!! Club Register Steve Trehair is starting to receive completed club register forms. If you have not sent yours in please do so tight away and don’t forget the input in terms of recommendation of service providers. Just let Steve know. This can include anything relating to good service – machining, spray painting, supply of parts/services etc. This makes life that much easier when looking for the right person for the job.
