GOV101

Vineyard City has elected officials and staff who work hard each day to assure that the City is running and developing smoothly and that your needs as a resident are being met. However, local government can sometimes be a bit of a mystery to those who aren’t involved in it daily. So we’ve created GOV101 to demystify it a bit. Every month, you can come here to find out more about what your local government does everyday to make Vineyard great!

STORM WATER POLLUTIONStormwater runoff is rain that falls on streets, parking areas, sports fields, gravel lots, rooftops or other developed land and flows directly into nearby lakes, and rivers. The drizzling or pounding rain picks up and mixes with what’s on the ground:• Oil, grease, metals and coolants from vehicles;• Fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals

from gardens and homes;• Bacteria from pet wastes;• Soil from construction sites and other bare

ground;• Soaps from car or equipment washing;

Ways for the citizens of Vineyard to help combat stormwater pollution:

1. Never put anything down a storm drain. Always recycle used oil, antifreeze and other fluids. Fix oil leaks in your vehicles.

2. Wash your car at a commercial car wash rather than in the street or in your driveway. If you wash your car at home, wash it on your lawn.

3. Cut down on fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. If you use these chemicals, follow directions and use them sparingly. Don’t fertilize before a rainstorm. Consider using organic fertilizers. Compost or mulch lawn clippings. Preserve existing trees or plant new ones - trees hold rainfall and help manage stormwater.

4. Replace part of your lawn with native, drought-resistant plants. Add compost to planting soil and dress it with mulch to

improve plant growth and reduce stormwater runoff.

5. Pick up after your pets and keep animals out of streams. Scoop your dog’s poop and properly dispose of it.

6. Reduce impervious surfaces at home and increase the vegetated land cover of your property. Impervious surfaces include your roof, driveway, patios and lawn. Reduce rooftop runoff by directing your downspouts to vegetated areas, and not to the storm drain on your street. For your driveway and patios, consider putting in permeable paving or patterns of cement and brick that allow water to filter through it.

7. Support your local storm or surface water program. Take advantage of opportunities to educate yourself and your family about your local watershed. Consider volunteering for stream restoration or other local volunteer projects.

COUPLES/PARENTING CLASS

BIKE SAFETY

Vineyard City has partnered with USU Extension and Healthy Relationships Utah to host a virtual parenting class in May called “Parenting the Love and Logic Way.” The classes will be held online on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting May 11. If you are interested in enrolling, please visit this web page.

As the weather warms up and children are outside riding bikes and scooters, please drive slowly and talk to your children about watching out for cars. We recommend regular conversations about proper helmet wearing and bike safety. You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram for additional updates about things going on around Vineyard. Be safe and have a great April!

BUILDING SAFETY MONTHIt’s building safety month! From checking dryer vents to window safety our building department has tips all month for keeping you and your family safe. We have a JR. Inspector safety checklist for your family to check your home for any potential saftey hazards. When completed, bring it to the city office to receive a prize and be entered in our raffle. Watch out on our social channels for more activities and to learn more about building safety.

OUR HERITAGEHEY, THAT HORSE BITESFarmers in Vineyard could make money during WWI by selling horses to government. These horses were needed for the cavalry, and the government paid $125 per horse regardless of condition. Some people sold the horses with the nastiest dispositions, horses that kicked, bucked or bit.

Join Vineyard during the month of May as we celebrate our 4th annual Bike Month! We will have events throughout the month like Bike to the city, Bike to School, a Bike Rodeo, and more! Participate in Bike Month to win your Bike Month t-shirt! RSVP to the Facebook event for more details.

Unused opioids—such as hydrocodone, morphine, and oxycodone—are dangerous to have in your home when they are no longer needed. Children or pets can accidentally take unused opioids or visitors might search for them in your drawers and medicine cabinets. Remove the risk of your unused opioids and help address the devastating opioid crisis affecting so many American families. Proper disposal of unused prescription opioids can save lives. Vineyard City has installed a NarcX opioid disposal unit in the city building for all residents to dispose of their unused opioids and other medications safely.
