BERLIN - The latest new models, pioneering concept vehicles and innovative technological developments are the headline-makers as BMW takes to the stage at the Auto China 2018 show in Beijing. The selection of new products on display at the international vehicle fair taking place from 25 April - 4 May 2018 underlines the company's commitment to the next steps in its electrification strategy, heralds its upcoming model offensive in the luxury segment and celebrates the continued success of the BMW X models. Added to which, the array of world and Asian premieres from BMW shines the spotlight on the huge significance of China as both the world's largest car market and the production location for a grow- ing number of models from the Bavarian premium brand. OTTAWA - It increasingly looks like the new stress test is causing more than just a temporary dip in housing market activity in the greater Toronto and Vancouver areas. Home resales were weak again in May for a fifth straight month in both markets. The Toronto Real Estate Board repor ted that resales were down 22.2% from the same period a year ago while the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver reported an even steeper drop of 35.1%. We don't make much of the fact that this represented the slowest year-over-year rate of decline in four months in Toronto. As a matter, we fully expected such as slowdown because May 2017 provided a significantly lower base for year ago comparisons. May 2017 was when activity really started to nosedive in the Toronto area following the introduction of Ontario's Fair Housing Plan in late April. In Vancouver, market cooling measures announced in the 2018 provincial budget in February also likely weighed on May resales. RBC is not overly concerned by what is becoming a more extensive market correction in two of Canada's largest markets. At this stage, we still believe that neither is in a death spiral. Despite sharply lower levels of activity, demand supply conditions (as depicted by the sales to new listings ratio) remain balanced. Benchmark prices are rising modestly on a month to month basis: we've seen 14 straight rises in Vancouver and four consecutive increases in Toronto including in May. Prices were down by 5.4% in May on a year-over-year basis in Toronto though this reflects a streak of declines that occurred over the second half of last year. If anything the year-over-year decline should be seen as a positive development considering how high prices had climbed previ- ously. The road ahead is likely to be bumpy for both the Toronto and Vancouver market. Still, we expect that as long as the economy contin- ues to grow they will manage to stay on track. Can sleeping more affect your heart? SEOUL, (IANS) If you thought that only less hours of sleep would affect your health, then you are wrong. Sleeping more than 10 hours per day is also associated with metabolic syndrome, raising the risk for heart diseases, according to a new study. Those who slept for over 10 hours daily were at risk of elevated waist circumference, high triglyceride levels - a type of fat, low levels of "good" choles- terol, hypertension as well as high fasting blood sugar - referred to as metabolic syndrome and associated with increased risk of cardio- vascular diseases. While sleeping more raised triglycerides levels in both men and women, in women it led to higher waist circumfer- ence, blood sugar as well as lower levels of "good" cholesterol. Conversely, getting less than six hours of sleep was associated with higher risk of metabolic syndrome in men and higher waist circum- ference among both men and women, researchers said. "This is the largest study examining a dose-response association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome and its components separately for men and women," said lead author Claire E. CHINESE VASE FOUND INSHOEBOX SELLS FOR £14MPARIS, (IANS) An 18th century Chinese vase, left for de-cades in a shoebox in France, has sold for 16.2m euros(£14.2m). The vase was auctioned at Sotheby's in Paris onTuesday and sold for more than 20 times its estimated guideprice - 500,000 to 700,000 euros. It's the highest price everreached for a single item sold by Sotheby's in France, BBCreported. The vase formed par t of a family inheritance and was re-cently discovered in an attic. Sotheby's Asian ar ts exper t,Olivier Valmier, said the seller "took the train, then the metroand walked on foot through the doors of Sotheby's and intomy office with the vase in a shoebox protected by newspa-per. "When she put the box on my desk and we opened it, wewere all stunned by the beauty of the piece. "This is a major work of art," Valmier continued. "It is as ifwe had just discovered a Caravaggio." The 30 cm, bulb-shaped vase, painted in shades of green, blue, yellow andpurple, was described as an exceptionally well-preservedporcelain vessel made for an emperor of the Qing dynasty. Itdepicts deer, birds and other animals in a wood and includesgold embroidery around its neck. "Wedidn't like the vase too much, and my grandparents didn't likeit either," said the owner of the piece, who only got in touchwith Sotheby's in March. Make your home look spacious with minimalistic furnitureNEW DELHI, (IANS) Go for a simpleyet classy decor, and follow the 'lessis more' mantra. Star t withdecluttering your home by getting ridof heavy furniture and introduce natu-ral textures to your walls with a bal-ance, suggest experts. Sunil Suresh,Founder of Stanley Lifestyles, andTetsuya Fujita, President at CondeHouse, have listed the ways Indianscan embrace minimalist beauty andnature in home décor:* Declutter: Don't fill your room with

everything and anything. Keep yourdecor down to essentials. Few lightswith nice wooden tables can completea room without adding too much clutter.* Use subtle textures: Create some-thing which will be loved for a life-time. Natural textures, the usage ofash wood is a great way to add defi-nition in minimalistic settings.* Simplified designs: The designsshould showcase the beauty of na-ture. If you are buying a chair alwayscheck that the edge of the back, arm

and seat of the chair are raised asmuch as possible to provide beautywith slight sense of tension, and cre-ate unity overall. The ideal balanceof sharpness and softness should beevident and expressed in every angleof the chair.* Dispose off the heavy woodenshowcase: Minimalism is all aboutdoing away with excess, unneces-sary furniture pieces. The large show-case or display unit is a staple in urbanIndian homes and often takes up a lot ofspace. Wall niches are a more subtlealternative to display a small number ofcollectibles that you treasure.* Upgrade your furniture: Light furni-ture with clean-cut and contemporarylines is the way to go. Instead of goingwith traditional Indian furniture which isusually heavy, imposing and elabo-rately carved, choose plain, streamlinedwooden furniture with minimal or nodecoration. This will bring in a sleek, minimalist spin to your interiors.

WHY WORKPLACE FOOD MAYNOT BE HEALTHY FOR YOU

NEW YORK, (IANS) If you are in the habit of having lunch from yourworkplace cafeteria, think twice. It tend to contain high amount ofsodium and refined grains, calories and very little whole grains andfruit, leading to unhealthy eating putting you at risk of various diseaseincluding cancer, researchers warn. The study over 5,000 employees from a US firm, showed that nearlya quar ter had food from work at least once a week and that the aver-age weekly calories obtained was almost 1,300. The food tended tobe high in empty calories - those from solid fats and/or added sugars- with more than 70 per cent of the calories coming from food that wasobtained for free. "Our results suggest that the foods people get fromwork do not align well with the recommendations in the dietary guide-lines," said Stephen Onufrak, epidemiologist at the US Centers forDisease Control and Prevention."Since we found that a lot of the foods obtained by employees werefree, employers may also want to consider healthy meeting policiesto encourage healthy food options at meetings and social events," hesuggested. Workplaces can play more of a role to help ensure accessto and promote healthier food options, the researchers said. They suggest that employers could help their employees eat better atwork by using worksite wellness programs to promote healthy op-tions that are also appealing. They could also ensure that foods incafeterias or vending machines follow food service guidelines."Worksite wellness programmes have the potential to reach millions

of working people and have been shown to be effective at changinghealth behaviours among employees, reducing employee absentee-ism and reducing health care costs," Onufrak said. The study, pre-sented at the Nutrition 2018 meeting held in Boston, included datafrom 5,222 employees.

WHY DO YOU FEEL ANGRY WHEN HUNGRY?NEW YORK, (IANS) Ever experienced anger when hunger pangs hit you? According to research, it may be due to a complicatedemotional response involving an interplay of biology, personality and environmental cues. The study showed that hungry individualsrepor ted greater unpleasant emotions like feeling stressed and hateful when they were not explicitly focused on their own emotions."We all know that hunger can sometimes affect our emotions and perceptions of the world around us, but it's only recently that theexpression hangry, meaning bad-tempered or ir ritable because of hunger, was accepted by the Oxford Dictionary," said lead authorJennifer MacCormack from the University of Nor th Carolina at Chapel Hill, US. In a lab experiment, published in the journal Emotion, involving 200 university students, the team asked the par ticipants to either to fast or eat beforehand and then asked them to completea tedious exercise on a computer that was programmed to crash without their knowledge. They were also blamed for the crash.Af ter this, they answered a questionnaire which showed that hungry par ticipants thought that the researcher conducting the experi-ment was more judgmental or harsh. Those who spent time thinking about their emotions, even when hungry, did not repor t theseshif ts in emotions or social perceptions, proving the impor tance of awareness. "We find that feeling hangry happens when you feelunpleasantness due to hunger but interpret those feelings as strong emotions about other people or the situation you're in," said co-author Kristen Lindquist from the varsity. "Our bodies play a powerful role in shaping our moment-to-moment experiences, percep-tions and behaviors - whether we are hungry versus full, tired versus rested or sick versus healthy," MacCormack said.

PEOPLE WITH WRINKLED EYESAPPEAR MORE SINCERETORONTO, (IANS) Do you use anti-ageing creams? Be-sides hiding your wrinkles, they may also negatively impactpeople's perception of your sincerity, say researchers. The find-ings showed that human brains are pre-wired to perceivewrinkles around the eyes as conveying more intense and moresincere emotions. This eye-wrinkle feature, called the Duchenne marker, occursacross multiple facial expressions, including smiles, expres-sions associated with pain, and expressions of sadness. Whenpar ticipants were shown images of faces grinning and frown-ing with and without eye wrinkles, the participants focused onwhich one their brain deemed most important. They systemati-cally ranked the Duchenne smiles and Duchenne sad expres-sions as more sincere and more intense than the non-Duchenneexpressions, the researchers said."The expressions involving the Duchenne marker were alwaysdominant," said Julio Mar tinez-Trujillo, P rofessor at WesternUniversity in Ontario, Canada. "So if the emotion is more in-tense, your brain actually prefers to bring it into perceptualawareness for longer time." The results, published in the jour-nal Emotion, are a step toward understanding the more generalquestions of why facial expressions contain the specific facialactions they do, and how that contributes to our understandingof emotion, the researchers said. "These findings provide evi-dence of a potential universal language for reading emotions. Inother words, a given facial action may have a single role acrossmultiple facial expressions - especially if that facial actionshapes your social interactions," said Nour Malek from theuniversity. "My interest now is, what will be the results if we dothis same test with people with autism spectrum disorder. "Theyoften have trouble reading out emotions from other people, sowe wonder if that might have to do with their ability to read thismarker for sincerity," he said.

Negative emotions in adolescence are less distinctNEW YORK, (IANS) Adolescents do not distinguish between negativeemotions as clearly as younger children and adults in their 20s do, a newstudy suggests. The study, published in the journal Psychological Sci-ence, sheds light on how experiences of emotion vary at different agesand why adolescence may be a particularly vulnerable period in emo-tional development."We found a pretty interesting developmental trajectory when it comes toemotion differentiation," said lead author Erik Nook from the HarvardUniversity."Children tend to report feeling only one emotion at a time, producing differentiated but sparse emotional experiences. Adolescentsbegin to co-experience emotions but they are not well differentiated, andadults both co-experience and differentiate emotions" Nook added. The researchers suggest that the influx of co-experienced emotions inadolescence makes this a period of more murkiness in what emotionsone is feeling. For the study, 143 participants, ranging in age from five to25, completed a set of emotion-related tasks. The researchers askedparticipants to define 27 different emotion terms. The researchers usedfive of these emotion terms - angry, disgusted, sad, scared, and upset - ina subsequent emotion differentiation task.In this task, par ticipants viewed a series of 20 images showing a nega-tive scene of some kind. They indicated how much they felt each of thefive negative emotions when looking at an image by sliding a bar on ascale to the appropriate number (from 0 not at all to 100 very). The resultsrevealed a U-shaped pattern in par ticipants' experiences of negative emo-tions, with differentiation between emotions decreasing from childhood

to adolescence and increasing again from adolescence to early adult-hood.Although children showed high emotion differentiation, their ratings dif-fered from par ticipants of other ages in that the emotions they repor teddid not overlap - they showed a stronger tendency to repor t experiencingone emotion at a time, the researchers said. Adolescents, on the otherhand, were more likely to repor t experiencing several highly-correlatedemotions at one time. Adults tended to report feeling several emotionssimultaneously, but they appeared to be able to distinguish betweenemotions across trials, they added.

The researchers showed how "maternalgatekeeping" - the term to describe the behaviours and attitudes of moth-ers - may suppor t or limit the father's involvement in child rearing. If fathers feel their par tner was critical of their parenting skills, they areless likely to per form their duties toward the baby. "The behaviours ofmothers can shape how fathers interact with their children. Mothers may

not even be aware of how their criticisms of the father may end upnegatively influencing how they parent," said lead author LaurenAltenburger from The Ohio State University in the US. "If fathers feel theirpartners don't have confidence in their parenting, they may withdraw andbecome less positive and sensi-tive with their child."The study, published in the Journalof Child and Family Studies, in-cluded data from 182 couples. The pa r t i c ipan ts were as-sessed twice, when their childwas 3 months old and 9 monthsold. The more the fathers facedcr i t ic ism l i ke i r r i ta ted looksabout parenting at 3 months ageof their chi ld, the worse wasthe i r pa ren t i ng qua l i t y a t 9months."Many fathers may be more vul-nerable to criticism than moth-ers are because there is st i l lless suppor t in our society forfathers as active, involved parents,"said Sarah Schoppe-Sullivan, Pro-fessor at the varsity. Altenburgersaid: "It is about giving fathers thespace to parent, too. Both parentsneed to keep communication openand not be so quick to criticise."

NOVEL 'SURGERY IN A PILL'TO REVERSE DIABETESNEW YORK, (IANS) Researchers have developed "surgeryin a pill" that can reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes andhelp reverse diabetes. When the pill was administered inrats, it delivered a substance that could temporarily coatthe intestine, forming a thin barrier that alters nutrient con-tact and lowers blood glucose response after a meal, theresearchers said."We envision a pill that a patient can take before a meal thattransiently coats the gut to replicate the effects of surgery,"said Jeff Karp, a bioengineer at the Brigham and Women'sHospital (BWH) in Massachusetts, US. After a meal, bloodsugar levels rise and can stay elevated over time. How-ever, one hour af ter the pill was administered to the rats, theresponse to glucose was lowered by 47 per cent."What we've developed here is essentially, 'surgery in apill'," added Yuhan Lee, a materials scientist in the BWH.This response was temporary, and after three hours, theeffect essentially disappeared, the study showed. For thestudy, published in the journal Nature Materials, the teamselected a substance known as sucralfate - an FDA-ap-proved drug that is used in the treatment of gastrointestinalulcers - to adhere to the small intestine and then dissolvewithin a matter of hours.Fur ther, the team engineered the substance into a novelmaterial that can coat the lining of the intestine without requiringactivation by gastric acid. The engineered compound, referred to asLuCI (Luminal Coating of the Intestine), can be made into a dry pow-dered form that can be encapsulated as a pill. "We've used a bioengi-neering approach to formulate a pill that has good adhesion propertiesand can attach nicely to the gut in a preclinical model. And after a coupleof hours, its effects dissipate," Lee said. The team is now testingthe effect of shor t-and long-term use of LuCI in diabetic andobese rodent models.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE HABITS MAY QUICKLYLOWER BLOOD PRESSURENEW YORK, (IANS) Researchers have demonstrated that a programme aimed at helping peoplemodify lifes tyle factors such as diet and exercise is as effective as medication at reducing blood pressure. The study, presented at the Nutrition 2018 meeting in Boston, suggested that the par ticipants saw their bloodpressure drop 19 points, on average, after taking par t in a lifestyle programme for just 14 days. "By adaptingselected lifestyle health principles, half of the people in our study achieved normal blood pressure within twoweeks while avoiding the side effects and costs associated with blood pressure medications," said leadresearcher M. Alfredo Mejia, Associate Professor at Andrews University. The researchers found that thereduction in blood pressure accomplished by the programme was equivalent to what can be achievedusing three half-dose standard medications for blood pressure.

VEGETARIAN DIET LINKED TO LOWER RISK OFHEART DISEASESNEW YORK, (IANS) People who follow a vegetarian diet are likely to have a lower number of riskfactors for hear t disease and diabetes, says a study of South Asians living in the US. Researchers, including one of Indian-origin, found that those who followed a vegetarian diet had a lower bodymass index, smaller waist circumference and lower amounts of abdominal fat, lower cholesteroland lower blood sugar compared to people in the same demographic group who ate meat. Thestudy, presented at Nutrition 2018 meeting held in Boston, included data from 892 South Asians withmean age 55 years. The results presented by Sameera Talegawkar from George Washington Uni-versity in the US also showed that the odds of developing coronary ar tery calcium were lower inmen who followed vegetarian diet. The team said that fur ther studies were needed to determinewhether vegetarian diet is cardioprotective.

Erectile dysfunction may double hear t disease riskNEW YORK, (IANS) Erectile dysfunction (ED) indicates greater cardiovascular risk, regardless ofother risk factors, such as cholesterol, smoking and high blood pressure, researchers warn. Thefindings, published in the journal Circulation, suggest that ED is an important telltale sign that canhelp physicians gauge cardiovascular risk among middle-aged men.The researchers found that, among the par ticipants of the study carried over four years, those whorepor ted ED were twice as likely to experience hear t attacks, cardiac ar rests, sudden cardiac deathand fatal or non-fatal strokes. "Our results reveal that erectile dysfunction is, in and of itself, a potentpredictor of cardiovascular risk," said co-author Michael Blaha, Associate Professor at the JohnsHopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.According to the research, ED - defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection forsatisfactory sexual intercourse - affects nearly 20 per cent of men over age 20. Cardiovasculardisease and ED share common risk factors, including obesity, hypertension, smoking, diabetes andmetabolic syndrome - a condition marked by a cluster of features such as elevated blood sugar, hyper tension and excess abdominal fat. For the study, the researchers examined more than 1,900men, aged between 60 to 78.

EASY WAYS TO FIX POST-WORKOUT SORENESSNEW DELHI, (IANS) Soreness after an intense workoutis par t of the package. It cannot be completely over-come. However, it can be managed efficiently with propercare. Eat cherries, take out some time to relax after work-out and try to sleep, suggest exper ts. Badal Upreti, Per-sonal Trainer, Anytime Fitness, has shared how to over-come post-workout soreness:* Cherries help in increasing oxygen flow in your musclesreducing muscle inflammation, minimizing post-work-out pain and boosting recovery.* Immediately after a workout, usually people star t withtheir daily routine like going to the office. You must havetime to relax. It provides time for your body to use nutri-ents to rebuild and repair your muscles.* After workout, a nap of around one or two hours isnecessary as it helps the body enter deep and restor-ative stage of sleep, also helps your body to repair.* Drinking protein shakes or eating bars is good but it iscrucial to take enough amount of protein when it comesto easing muscle soreness. One should include any oneof the foods in your diet such as peanuts, almonds, yo-ghurt and bananas.* A shower after workout helps to decrease the inflam-mation of muscles, joints and tendons and also preventsvarious muscle injuries.* During heavy workout at gym, intake of water needs tobe maintained. Your muscle cells need water, so when itcomes to recovery, dehydration is one of your biggestenemies. Try to ensure intake of water for each hour ofexercise. Within a few hours after a workout, your urineshould be light yellow or clear. If it is dark yellow, thenyou are inadequately hydrated.Aashish Chaudhry, Managing Director and Or thopaedicSurgeon, Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital, also has some tricks:* Most people tend to skip the warm up session beforeintense workout without realizing how much they arerisking. By warming up before the workout routine youprepare your muscles for the heavy-lifting and reducechances of muscle soreness or damage. Similarly, lightworkout and stretches after the workout will benefit you.* Exercising with sore muscles may seem counterpro-ductive but doing so loosens your tight muscles and mayflush out the lactic acid that's causing you soreness. Itdoesn't have to be intense, a short jog will do.* After the workout, you can ask your trainer or friend fora good twenty minute massage to loosen your musclesand get your body fluids flowing. You can also do it your-self with a massage stick or a foam roller. You can alsoapply ice pack for 10 minutes or so to sore spots toreduce the inflammation in your muscles and speed upthe healing process.

DEPRESSION RISK HIGHER AMONG NERVECELL CANCER SURVIVORS: STUDY

NEW YORK, (IANS) Researchers have found that patients who suffered frompediatric neuroblastoma - a childhood cancer of nerve cells - may have ahigher risk of developing long term psychological difficulties, including de-pression and attention deficit disorders."These findings are novel because this is the first large study that could lookat how neuroblastoma patients are doing in terms of psychological andeducational outcomes," said one of the researchers Nina Kadan-Lottick fromYale University School of Medicine in the US. "Our hope is that these findingswill help inform strategies for early screening and intervention to identify

those survivors at highest risk for developing psychological and educationalimpairment later on in life," Lottick explained. The study, published in the journal Cancer, analysed data from 859 childrenwho had been diagnosed with neuroblastoma at least five years earlierand were under 18 years old. The data were compared with theadditional data from 872 siblings of these patients. The resultsshowed that neuroblastoma survivors had 19 per cent increasedprevalence of impairment in the domains of anxiety or depressionas opposed to 14 per cent among the siblings.

LONDON, (IANS) Using smar tphone application that promotes ahealthy lifestyle can help slow ar tery ageing by improvingcompliance to a proper diet and physical activity, suggestresearchers. Ar teries harden with age, increasing the risk ofatherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular disease. Goodeating habits, smoking cessation and physical exercise are knownto prevent atherosclerosis."We found that a healthy lifestyle smar tphone app, added to briefadvice on diet and exercise, improved a marker of ar terial hard-ness, indicating delayed ar terial ageing and a lower risk foratherosclerosis," said Jose Ignacio Recio-Rodriguez, AssistantProfessor at Spain's University of Salamanca. The results werepresented at the EuroHear tCare 2018 in Dublin. In the study, the team analysed 597 adults without hear t diseaseaged 70 years or under whether using a smar tphone app couldslow ar tery ageing by improving compliance with a Mediter raneandiet - rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, potatoes, olive oil, seeds, fish, low saturated fat, and dairy products - and physical activity -equivalent to at least 10,000 steps a day. At three months, the appgroup improved their physical activity level using a self-repor tmethod. They also showed better results in modifying the usual diet

composition, with a higher percentage of carbohydrates, and lowerpercentages of total fat and saturated fat. Intake of trans fats andprocessed meats were also reduced. "Healthy lifestyle apps couldbe a power ful weapon against ar terial ageing. But studies are stillneeded to demonstrate their ability to reduce hear t attacks anddeath from cardiovascular disease," Recio said.

CO2 jabs result in short-termreduction of belly fat: Study

Loneliness can double risk ofdying early: StudyLONDON, (IANS) Men and women who “feel lonely” aremore likely to have worse mental health, heart disease con-ditions and die early than those “living alone”, according to astudy. The findings showed that loneliness was associatedwith a doubled mor tality risk in women and nearly doubledrisk in men. Both men and women who felt lonely were threetimes more likely to report symptoms of anxiety and depres-sion, and had a significantly lower quality of life than thosewho did not feel lonely.“Loneliness is a strong predictor of premature death, worsemental health, and lower quality of life in patients with car-diovascular disease, and a much stronger predictor thanliving alone, in both men and women,” said Anne VinggaardChristensen, doctoral student, at the Copenhagen UniversityHospital. The results were presented at the annual nursingcongress EuroHeartCare 2018 in Dublin. The study investi-gated whether poor social network was associated with worseoutcomes in 13,463 patients with ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), heart failure, or heart valvedisease. Feeling lonely was associated with poor outcomes in allpatients regardless of their type of heart disease, and even af teradjusting for age, level of education, other diseases, body massindex, smoking, and alcohol intake. People with poor social supportmay have worse health outcomes because they have unhealthierlifestyles, are less compliant with treatment, and are more affectedby stressful events. But, when “we adjusted for lifestyle behavioursand many other factors in our analysis, we still found thatloneliness is bad for health,” Christensen said.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Fed up of trying to reduce belly fat? A weekly carbon dioxide gas-basedtherapy could be safe and effective in eliminating fat around the stomach, results of first clinicaltrials have shown. Carboxytherapy - carbon dioxide gas injections - could potentially be a newand non-invasive means of fat reduction. However, the changes were modest and did not result in long-term fat reduction, according to thepaper published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Carboxytherapy is a"safe, inexpensive gas, and injecting it into fat pockets may be preferred by patients who likenatural treatments", said lead author Murad Alam, vice chair of dermatology at Nor thwesternUniversity Feinberg School of Medicine. While the way carboxytherapy works is not well understood, it is believed that injection ofcarbon dioxide causes changes in the microcirculation, and damages fat cells, he said. For thestudy, the team included a small set of adults who were not overweight and were randomised toget weekly carbon dioxide gas injection to one side of their abdomens and a sham treatment onthe other side once a week for five weeks.A high-resolution ultrasound detected a reduction in super ficial fat after five weeks but not at 28weeks. The patients' body weight did not change over the course of the study. That the differencewas not maintained at six months suggests the treatment stimulated a temporary metabolicprocess that reduced the size of fat cells without inducing cell death, Alam said.
