Enlisting in June, 1915, and sailing as lieutenant in charge of 14th Reinforcements 2nd Bn. 15th January, 1916, was transferred to 54th Bn.reinforcements in England 22nd May, joining Bn. in France 21st July and serving at the Somme, Hindenburg Line, Bullecourt, Villers-Bretonneux and elsewhere until demobilisation. Promoted captain, 30th September, 1916. Member S.U. Scouts. Early education at Mrs. Boodle's and Miss Cottingham's North Sydney Preparatory Schools, All Saints' College, Bathurst, and Sydney High and Grammar Schools. In 1932, Robert was involved in a unique happening in the AIF. A soldier returning from the front line under shell, fire in 1916, went missing. His commanding officer was left in the position of charging him as being “illegally absent.” This slur was not corrected till 1932. See details at end of dossier.
