Sinceitsestablishmentinthe16thcentury,
VilniusUniversity,asintegralpartofEuropean
scienceandculture,hasembodiedtheconcept
ofaclassicaluniversityandtheunityofstudies
andresearch.
The oldest and largest Lithuanian higher
education institution, Vilnius University is an
activeparticipantininternationalscientificand
academicactivitiesandboastsmanyprominent
scientists, professors and graduates.With the
supportofsocialpartners,theUniversityeduca-
tesglobally-mindedspecialistswhosuccessfully
integrateinthemodernEuropeancommunity.
Currently,theUniversityhas12faculties,8
institutes, 3 university hospitals, 10 study and
researchcentres,oneoftherichestlibrariesinEu-
rope,theAstronomicalObservatory,abotanical
garden,acomputercentre,StJohns’Church.
The number of students at the University
comprises one-fifth of the total population of
studentsinthecountry.One-fourthofthepro-
fessors of higher education establishments of
Lithuaniaworkhere.
The prestigious Vilnius University devotes
specialattentiontothedevelopmentoffunda-
mentalandappliedsciencesandthequalityof
studies.TheUniversityenjoysauniqueacademic
atmosphere and academic freedomwith the
priorityalwaysgiven to intellect,wisdomand
tolerance.
VilniusUniversity,which is celebrating its
425thanniversary,remainsyoung,dynamic,pro-
gressiveandopentotheworld,scientificvalues

A Short History
VilniusUniversity,oneoftheoldesthigher
educationestablishmentsinCentralandEastern
Europe,hasforalongtimebeentheonlyLithua-
nianuniversityandhadamarkedinfluenceon
theculturallifeoftheneighbouringstates.
The history of the University is complex
anddiverse,intertwinedwiththehistoryofthe
Lithuanianstateandreflectingitsmostdramatic
periods.
��70The Jesuits, who came to Vilnius at the
invitation of Bishop Valerianus Protasevicius,
establishedaCollegeandopenedalibrary.The
librarywas startedwith a collectionof books
donatedbytheKingofPolandandGrandDuke
ofLithuania,SigismundusAugustus.
��79On1April,KingStephanusBatoreusissued
aChartergrantingtheCollegetheprivilegesofa
university,andon30October,PopeGregoryXIII
announcedaPapalBullconfirmingthetransfor-
mationoftheCollegeintoaUniversity.
AlthoughfarfromEuropeanculturalcentres,
theUniversityofVilnius sufficedpotential for
developingprogressivescientificideasandcould
boastanumberofdistinguishedprofessorsand
students. The poet and professorMathias Ca-
simirusSarbievius,thelaureateofPopeUrban
VIIIprize,becameknownthroughoutEurope,
andthebookbyprofessorMartinusSmiglecius,
“Logica”(“Logic”),gainedrecognitionandwas
widelyusedinFrenchandBritishuniversities.
�6��TheFacultyofLawwasestablishedunder
thecharteroftheKingVladislausIVandfunded
bytheLithuanianvice-chancellorCasimirusLeo
Sapieha.
�7��TheAstronomicObservatorywasestablished,
whichwasthefourthintheworldandtheoldest
inEasternEurope.
�77�After theabolitionof the JesuitOrder, the
Universitywasput under the authority of the
Education Commission, the prototype of the
ministry of secular education in Europe. The
teachingofnaturalscienceswasreinforced.
�78�TheUniversitywasgrantedthenameofthe
CentralSchooloftheGrandDuchyofLithuania.
TheFacultyofMedicinewasestablished.
�80�The University was named an Imperial
University.Itwasauthorizedtomanageoneof
sixRussianeducationdistricts.Atthattimethe
University had a number ofworld-renowned
scholars:thenaturalistGeorgForster,whowas
alsoafamoustraveller,memberoftheteamof
CaptainCook’ssecondvoyagearoundtheworld,
professor Andrzej Sniadecki, the originator of
physiologyinLithuania,themedicsfromVienna-
JohannPeterFrankandhissonJosephFrank(the
formerreformedtheteachingofmedicineand
establishedatherapyclinicsandthelattersetup

andVaccinationandMaternityInstitutes).
�8��TsarNicholasIorderedtheuniversitytobe
closed.
ThenameofVilniusUniversitywasproclai-
medbyitsgraduates-writersandpoetsAdam
Mickiewicz,JuliuszSlowacki,JozefIgnacyKras-
zewskiandAntonyEdwardOdynec,historians
MichalBalinskiandTeodorNarbutt,orientolo-
gistsJozefKowalewskiandJozefSenkowski,and
geologistIgnacyDomeyko.
�9�8After theproclamationof Lithuania’s inde-
pendenceon16February,attemptsweremade
toreopentheuniversity.On5December1918,
theLithuanianStateCouncilapprovedtheStatute
oftheUniversityandannouncedadecisionto
re-establishtheUniversityinJanuary1919.
�9�9-�9�9ThePolishStephenBathoryUniversityfunc-
tioned inVilnius.Oneof its studentswas the
futureNobelPrizewinner,CzeslawMilosz.
�9�9VilniusUniversityreneweditsactivitywhen
FacultiesofHumanitiesandLawweretransferred
fromKaunas.
�9�0After theSovietannexationofLithuania in
1940,VilniusUniversitywasreorganizedaccor-
dingtothemodelofhighereducationestablish-
mentsoftheSovietUnion.
�9��TheNazi invadersclosed theUniversity in
1943, and it resumed itswork in the autumn
of1944.
�990WiththerestorationofLithuanianindepen-
dence,thestatuteoftheuniversitywasapproved
andtheUniversityregaineditsautonomy.

The architectural ensemble of Vilnius
University
VilniusUniversitywas establishedback in
the 16th century under the jurisdiction of the
VilniusbishopinablockofVilniusframedby
fourstreets:Universiteto(formerlyVyskupù),Šv.
Jono,PiliesandSkapo.TheinitiatoroftheVilnius
JesuitCollege,BishopValerianusProtasevicius,
bought a brick building for the college from
thesecretaryoftheGrandDuchyofLithuania,
MikalojusJasinskis.In1570,onestablishmentof
theCollegeandtheLibrary,severalmorenearby
buildingswereboughtandin1571,theJesuits
werealsogivenStJohn’sChurch.Theensemble
wasgraduallyexpandinguntil itoccupiedthe
entireblockoftheOldtownandmanysurroun-
dingbuildings.
In fourcenturies, thepurpose,designand
architectural forms of the university buildings
oftenchanged.Currently, theoldarchitectural
ensemble of theUniversity ismade up of 13
courtyardswith13buildingswhichhaveseveral
sectionseachaswellasStJohn’sChurchanda
belfry.ThethirteenthBursacourtyardandthe
buildingsoftheFacultyofPhilosophywouldbe
attachedtotheensemblein2004.
In1985,VilniusUniversitywasawardedthe
European goldmedal for the preservation of
oldbuildings.Thiswasthesecondsuchmedal
awardedtoaEuropeanuniversity.VilniusUni-
versityisoneofthefewuniversitiesinEurope
whichhaspreservedtheoriginalpurposeofits
buildingssinceitsestablishment.Theensemble
ofVilniusUniversitywillrepresentLithuaniain
theBrusselspark“MiniEurope”whichdisplays
themostfamousbuildingsandotherstructures
ofculturalorhistoricalvalueof theEuropean
Unionmemberstates.
The spectacular chambers and cozy cour-
tyardsofVilniusUniversity, theactivestudent
lifeandtheauraofthepasthavealwaysattracted
manyvisitors.Universityteachersandstudents
are proud of the buildings of the University,
whicharethewitnessesofthehonourableand
rich past and surround the universitywith a
specialanduniqueatmosphere.
Theoldbuildingscomprisethefacultiesof
HistoryandPhilology, theInstituteofForeign
Languages,theLibraryandtheRector’soffice.
Here,studentsfromallfacultiesgatheron1Sep-
tembertocelebratethestartofanewacademic
year.Other facultiesof theUniversityaredis-
persedaroundthecity:therearefivecampuses
inVilniusandoneinKaunas.Intotal,Vilnius
Universityownsover100buildingsinVilnius,
KaunasandotherLithuaniantowns.

TheUniversity should distinguish itself by
abroadspectrumoffundamentalandapplied

positionamongotherLithuanianinstitutionsin
allresearchareasthatareessentialtothevery
nature of a comprehensiveUniversity and set
itselfthegoalofinternationalexcellenceinthe
interdisciplinaryresearch.TheUniversityshould

doorsandprovidinguniversaleducationforthe

Studies atVilnius University
Thanks to the academic traditions, which
wereformedduringlongcenturies,VilniusUni-
versityhas accumulatedawideexperience in
organizingstudiesandcreatedthefoundations
ofvariousstudyareasandfieldsbasedonthe
knowledge reflecting fundamental and latest
scientificachievements.Theuniversityhasalso
raisedqualifiedteachingstaffabletoensurethe
unityofstudiesandscience.
VilniusUniversityoffersundergraduate,gra-
duateandpostgraduate studies inhumanities,
socialsciences,physicalsciences,biomedicine
andtechnologies.
Theundergraduatestudiesusuallylastfour
years andgraduates areawardedabachelor’s
degreeand,incertainareas,alsoaprofessional
qualification. The graduate studies –Master-
degreestudiesorprofessionalstudies–lastfrom
oneandahalftotwoyears.GraduatesofMaster
studies are awarded aMaster degree. Special
professional studies are aimed at granting the
studentsahigh-levelprofessionalqualification.
Studies in the fields of law,medicine and
odontology embrace both undergraduate and
graduatestudies.Theresidence–postgraduate
-studiesenable themedicineandodontology
graduatestoacquireahigherqualificationofa
specializedmedicaldoctor.Thedoctoralstudies
prepareresearchersinvariousfields.Thesepost-
graduatestudieslastfouryearsandendwiththe
defenceofadoctoralthesis.
Seeking to satisfy the need of society for
life-longlearning,VilniusUniversityisoffering
manydifferentcoursesandprogrammesaimed
atincreasingthequalificationorre-qualification
ofspecialistsaswellasexpandingthegeneral
orprofessionalknowledgeofcitizens.
International students
Regular students
The University of Vilnius admits non-Lit-
huaniancitizenstoallstudyprogrammesofall
threecyclesandtoallfaculties.Theinternational
degreestudentsareadmittedthroughgeneralad-
missionprocedurerunbytheStudyOffice.The
languageofinstructioninalldegreeprogrammes
is Lithuanian; therefore, one-year Lithuanian
languagecoursesareofferedbytheuniversity
beforetheregularstudiesbegin.
ThedegreeprogrammesofferedatVilnius
UniversityrestonapatternleadingtoBachelor’s
degree after four years of study (160national
or240ECTScredits)andMaster’sdegreeafter
another twoyears (80national and 120ECTS
credits).

Thepostgraduatedoctoralprogrammesare
of individualcharacterand requireup to four
years of combined coursework, exams, and
researchaswellascontributiontointernational
publications.
Thespecificprofessionalqualificationisof-
feredinmedicineandlawatVilniusUniversity.
The studies leading to these degrees last five
yearsinlawandsixyearsinmedicineandputan
emphasisonaconsiderableamountofpractical
workinthechosenfieldofspecialisation.
Adegreeprogrammecombinescompulsory,
optional,andelectivesubjectsleadingtoadegree
titlewhich specifies themain subject studied.
The percentage of compulsory, optional and
electivesubjectswithineachparticulardegree
programme differs both from year to year of
studyaswellasfromfacultytofaculty.
Exchange students
Atpresent theuniversity also offers about
200coursesinforeignlanguagesforfreemovers
andexchange students,whowish to spenda
study period at theUniversity. In these cases
international students are invited to compose
theirstudyprogrammefromtheofferedlistac-
cordingtotheirinterestsandtherequirements
leadingtostudyperiodrecognitionattheirhome
university.
The exchange students coming to Vilnius
under the exchange programme or bilateral
agreement are treated according to the pro-
grammeoragreementconditionsand,asarule,
areexemptfromthetuitionfeesatVilniusUni-
versity.Thefree-moversareexpectedtocover
tuitioncosts.
Thereareseveraldifferentwaysofarranging
temporarystayatVilniusUniversity.Themost
commonare:
1. Bilateralagreements–signedbyVilnius
Universityandasendinguniversityonanylevel:
institutional, faculty or departmental. The stu-
dentsmayinquireabouttheoptionsattheOffice
ofInternationalRelationsoftheiruniversities.
2. SOCRATES/ERASMUS and /orTEMPUS
programmes.
3. Culturalagreements–concludedbyLit-
huanianauthoritieswiththeauthoritiesofother
countriestopromoteco-operationandcultural
links.Theculturalagreementsaremanagedby
DepartmentofScienceandResearchunderthe
MinistryofEducationofLithuania,neverthelessa
letterofacceptanceataLithuanianinstitutionhas
tobesubmittedtogetherwiththeapplication.
At themoment Lithuania enjoys cultural
agreementswith the following countries: Be-
larus,Denmark,GreatBritain,Estonia,France,
Latvia,Mexico,Poland,CzechRepublic,China,

Theacademicyearconsistsofautumnand
spring semesters. Both semesters are compo-
sed of 16 studyweeks and four examination
weeks.

Theacademicyear is interruptedby some

VilniusUniversityboastsover1,500teaching
andresearchstaffincludingapprox.170doctors
habilitus,nearly900doctorsand600doctoralstu-
dents.Intherecentfiveyears,over300doctoral
and38doctorhabilitusthesesweredefended.
Annually, University researchers publish ap-
proximately 30monographs, 20-30 textbooks
andteachingmanualsandover1,500articlesin
Lithuanian, international and foreign research
journals.TheresultsofresearchattheUniversity
are presented at Lithuanian and international
conferences.
The scientific schools that were formed
at Vilnius University, such as research of the
Balticlanguages,laserphysics,semiconductor,
ferroelectricanddisorderedsolidstatephysics,
researchofbiomoleculartransformations,num-
bertheoryandprobabilitytheory,cardiovascular
surgery,newchemicalcompoundsynthesisand
research,havecreatedthebasisforthedevelop-
mentofnewscientificfieldsandbranches.
Scientific development and the expanding
relations with global research centres have
contributedtothevarietyofresearchatVilnius
University. The research achievements and
integrationof therecentdecadeshaveencou-
ragedtheemergenceofnewmodernresearch
branchessuchasbioethics,bio-informationand
behaviouristicsystems,biomedicineopticsand
lasermedicine,ecosystemsandglobalchanges,
genomics and biotechnology and the variety,
originandphenotypicrealizationofthehuman
genome.Moreover,VilniusUniversitydevelops
new technologies such as information society
technologies,lasertechnologies,materialcrystal
structureengineeringandnanostructuretechno-
logies,semiconductorradianttechnologies,etc.
Thenewtrendsinthedevelopmentofthe
Lithuanianstateandtheprospectofintegration
into the European Union have openedwide
prospectsforthedevelopmentofcontemporary
branchesof social andhumanitarian sciences:
researchof thecommunication inknowledge-
basedeconomy;citizens,governanceandsecu-
rity in theconditionsofglobalization; society,
communityandpersonality:thechangeofthe
qualityoflifeandvalues;genderstudies;langua-
geandthought;orientalstudiesandcomparative
culturology,etc.Themodernerapresentednew
opportunitiestodevelopthefieldsimportantfor
theLithuaniancultureandsciencesuchasthe
Lithuanian history, philosophy, literature and
bookscience, tocreate thescientificbasis for
theLithuanianlegalreformandconductresearch
intothepoliticalthought,politicalsystemsand
economicandsocialdevelopmentinLithuania.
TheroleandimportanceofVilniusUniversity
isincreasingtogetherwiththerestructurization
of theLithuanianscience.TheUniversitynow
embracesfivestateresearchinstitutesofEcology,
Experimental and ClinicalMedicine, Immuno-
logy, Oncology and Theoretical Physics and
Astronomy. Several hospitals - the Santariškés
Clinics, theŽalgirioClinics and theChildren’s
Hospital-gainedthestatusofVilniusUniversity
hospitals. These changes have contributed to

anditspracticalimportance.
The researchers of Vilnius University are
increasinglyengagedinLithuanian,EU,NATO
and other international scientific programmes
andconductcommissionedresearchwork.The
laser specialists of theUniversity have joined
theEuropeanLaserNetworkandhavecreated
acentreofexcellence“Cebiola” togetherwith
thebiochemistryspecialists.Theresearchersof
thematerialscienceestablisheda“Selitec”centre
ofexcellenceandjoinedtheprogrammesofthe
EuropeanNuclearResearchCentre,CERN.Many
foreignresearchersareusingourresearchbase,
andtheinternationalconferencesorganizedby
theuniversityattractmanyprominentscientific
figures,e.g.NobelprizewinnersphysicistsKlaus
vonKlitzing,ZhoresAlfiorov,andchemistsRyoji
NoyoriandK.B.Sharpless.
Universityresearchershaveearnednational
andinternationalacclaim.Thisisillustratedby
their membership of the Lithuanian Science
Academy,EuropeanScienceandArtAcademy
andotherinternationalacademicorganizations,
awardsofhonorarytitlesatforeignuniversities,
participation in international congresses and
programmecommitteesandinternationalprizes
andgrants.Since therestorationofLithuanian
independence in 1990, 27 researchworks of
VilniusUniversitywereawardedthemostimpor-
tantscientificawardofthestate,theLithuanian
science prize, and 57 researchers became the
winnersofthisprize.
International relations
Vilnius University, just as any other old
Europeanuniversity,hasdevelopedatradition
of international relations and cooperation as
wellasstudentandteacherexchange.Sinceits
establishment, theuniversityhasbeeninviting
foreign professors and accepting international
studentsfromallthelandsoftheGrandDuchyof
Lithuania,Poland,theCzechRepublic,Hungary
andWesternEurope.
TheinternationalrelationsoftheUniversity
weredevelopinganddeterioratingfollowingthe
patternoftheoverallstate’spoliticalandecono-
micsituation,buthaveneveractuallyceased.
Currently, international cooperation and
internationalrelationsarewitnessinganupswing.
Thenumberofbilateralagreementswithforeign
universitiesisgrowing,cooperationgeography
expandinganditsnaturechanging.Internatio-
nalcooperationhasanimpactonallspheresof
Universitylifeembracingstudies,researchand
administrator cooperation.TheUniversity also
opensupforpartners fromabroad. Itactively
participates inprojectsof internationalorgani-
zationssuchasUNESCO,NATOandEUAand
engagesinEUeducationandscientificprogram-
mes SOCRATES, LEONARDO,EUREKA,COST
andFRAMEWORK.

Today,thefocushasshiftedfromthequantity
ofrelationstotheirquality.In1996,VilniusUni-
versitywasthefirstinLithuaniatostartimplemen-
tingtheECTS–Europeancredittransfersystem.
