Lions TamedJunior forward Eric Paschall scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures and No. 6 Villanova (1-0) eased past Columbia (0-1) by a final score of 75-60 in the season opener for both teams at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday night.

“That is a very smart, well-coached Columbia team to play against,” Wildcats head coach Jay Wright said. “They are a really good team. I knew this would be a good test for us.

“They are talented, execute well and have expe-rienced players. Our experienced players played well tonight and some of our young guys got their first taste of playing. That’s what we are going to have to do this year.”

Although the Wildcats never trailed in the con-test, the key to the game was a 19-4 run span-ning the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half. Villanova led 25-21 after a Lions basket with 4:23 left in the first half, but stretched the margin to 32-23 at the break and then surged to a 44-25 advantage with 16:51 left in the game. A three-pointer by Phil Booth on the opening possession of the second half put the Wildcats ahead by double digits for good.

Villanova shot just 36 percent from the field in the first half before making four of its first five shots in the second half to give life to the game’s decisive run.

Paschall scored nine of his 15 points in the second half and freshman Omari Spellman had nine points and nine rebounds following the break. Donte DiVincenzo added 13 points for the Wildcats, including five points in quick succes-sion on a three-pointer and then a layup in the opening minutes of the second half.

Villanova also got eight points and seven re-bounds from Mikal Bridges in a balanced overall effort.

The first half was mostly a back-and-forth affair, with Columbia staying within striking distance of the Wildcats early on. Mike Smith was 7-of-21 from the field and scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Lions, while Kyle Castlin also reached double figures with 10 points. Columbia made 6-of-11 shots from three-point range in the second half.

Another decisive factor in the game was the Wildcats dominance on the glass. Villanova had a 45-32 rebounding edge and turned 16 offen-sive caroms into a 15-6 edge in second chance points. Spellman and Paschall combined for 11 rebounds on the offensive end.

As for the backcourt, the Wildcats were efficient in limiting mistakes throughout the game. Vil-lanova turned the ball over just seven times and had only one miscue in the entire second half.

The game marked the first time that the Wild-cats played a season opener at the Wells Fargo Center, where they will play 12 games during the 2017-18 campaign while the on-campus Fin-neran Pavilion undergoes renovations. Villano-va is now 51-34 (.600) all-time in the building on Broad Street, and has won 41 of its last 60 games there dating back to the start of the 2004-05 season. A crowd of 10,504 was on hand for the season opener.

The 2017-18 Villanova Basketball season is pre-sented by KeyBank.

Brunson BitsIn addition to being an Associated Press first team preseason All-American, junior guard Ja-len Brunson is also the preseason choice for BIG EAST Player of the Year.

Brunson scored 14 points in the win over Co-lumbia and his stewardship of this unit will play an important role moving forward.

“Last year Jalen stepped up a little bit more,” noted Wildcats’ head coach Jay Wright. “But this year, he’s stepped up to become the player and leader that he is.

“He’s just a natural born leader. He’s a real good scorer and, even though he’s a point guard, he can really shoot the ball well. I think you all will see the true Jalen Brunson this year.”

For his part, Brunson says he hasn’t altered his outlook with the added responsibility.

“I just keep the same approach,” he stated Fri-day night. “It might be a little different role but I keep the same mentality. I’m playing for my teammates and coaches, working hard individ-ually and try and get my teammates ready for a game like this.”

O ShowAs one of the nation’s most decorated recruits in 2016, it was anticipated that Omari Spellman would make an instant impact upon his enroll-ment at Villanova. Alas, an academic redshirt changed the course of his freshman campaign as he practiced with the squad but did not suit up on game day.

Hence, his long-anticipated debut came Friday night and it didn’t disappoint. The native of the Cleveland area recorded a double-double in his initial collegiate appreance, finishing with 11

points and 11 rebounds in the win over the Lions.

“I liked how he rebounded the ball,” stated Wright. “For a big guy that is the most difficult offense to guard and he did it well in his first game. Also, they brought their five away from the basket and he was forced to guard the ball off of ball screens and he did a good job with it. Decision making, communicating defensively, all of those things well get better the more he plays.”

D TalesAlthough its offensive fireworks tend to draw the headlines, Villa-nova’s foundation is its defensive tenacity.

On Friday night, its value was on display again as the Wildcats leaned on the D to offset a night when they were just 7-of-32 (.219) from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Wildcats held the Lions to 23 first half points and a total of 60.Last season, VU was 22-1 when limiting opponents to 65 points or fewer.

BIG EAST Freshman of the WeekSpellman posted a double-double in his first collegiate game with 11 points and 11 rebounds in a 75-60 victory against Columbia. Spellman recorded his double-double in just 23 minutes of playing time.

Three Other Frosh Are In The Mix In addition to Spellman, three other newcomers tasted their first NCAA regular season action for the Wildcats on Friday night.

Guard Collin Gillespie, a product of Archbishop Wood High School, contributed six points in 19 minutes.

Forward Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree - known to friends and family as “Da-Da” grabbed two rebounds in nine minutes of activity.

Wing player Jermain Samuels earned seven minutes of playing time though he did not dent the scoring column.

“It’s going to be interesting,” stated Wright. “We haven’t had a team where four young guys are going to be heavily depended on.

“On the other hand, we have pretty much six starters. Donte (DiVincenzo) will play starter minutes and he has been great about coming off the bench. He’s a great team player. We have to get these young guys experience. It might look bad early, it might hurt us early but it gives us potential at the end to be a pretty good team.”

Powered by EPOne of the experienced hands who played a key role for Villanova on Friday evening was junior Eric Paschall. Paschall first entered the program in 2015 as a transfer from Fordahm University, where he earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honors.

After sitting out the ‘15-16 season per NCAA transfer rules, Pas-chall emerged as a contributing component of the rotation as the Wildcats amassed a 32-4 record in 2016-17. In his third full year in the Blue and White, the Dobbs Ferry, N.Y native appears more comfortable than ever in this environment.

By the end of the ‘16-17 season, Paschall had grown into a critical

On Friday he was 6-of-10 from the field in 28 minutes for 15 points to go with nine rebounds.

2017-18 SeasonThe 2017-18 Villanova Basketball Season is presented by KeyBank.

This is the 98th season of Wildcats basketball dating to the program’s birth in 1920-21.

Finneran Pavilion on the HorizonOn Feb. 14, Villanova University’s Board of Trustees formally approved a com-prehensive renovation plan for the 31-year-old Pavilion on Villanova’s campus. The significant $60 million renovation, which will be funded entirely by donor support, will transform the existing Pavilion—creating a high-quality, game-day experience for Villanova students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans.

The renovation of the Pavilion began in June 2017. Upon its projected reopen-ing in the fall of 2018, the arena will officially be named the Finneran Pavilion. Progress on the renovation may be tracked for the official web site of the transi-tion, finneranpavilion.com.

Villanova recorded its 180th consecutive regular season sellout at the Pavilion against Crerighton on Feb. 25. The Wildcats closed out the original version of the Pavilion by going 10-1 in the facility in 2016-17. The Cats posted a lifetime record of 293-62 (.825) at the building on Ithan Avenue.

In 2017-18, the Wildcats will host 12 games at the Wells Fargo Center and one on campus at Jake Nevin Field House (Nov. 29 vs. Penn). This will be the Wild-cats first regular season appearance in the facilty since Jan. 4, 1986. A limited supply of tickets will be offered via lottery to Villanova’s student body.
