Welcome to Villages in Action’s Spring 2016 programme – and we’re delighted to present another season of exceptional arts events being performed across Devon.

Villages in Action (VIA) is a rural touring scheme that brings top quality professional arts events to rural communities in Devon. We work with local volunteer promoters to select and present an exciting and wide ranging programme of high quality events right in the heart of each community. There are lots of fantastic shows to choose from and they often sell out, so put those dates in your diary and book your tickets now!

VIA is fund-raising! We launched a new phase of fund-raising last season, starting in September with a fabulous Evening with Michael Morpurgo (one of our patrons) at the Beehive in Honiton. But the fund-raising hasn’t stopped there! If you like what we do and would like to support us, please visit www.villagesinaction.co.uk/

support-us and set up a standing order or make a one-off donation. Your support is much-needed and very much appreciated.

Promoter Development Last year, aided by a grant from The Big Lottery Fund Awards for All Scheme, we were able to spend more time with our dedicated and rather marvellous rural volunteer promoters, running skill and experience-sharing gatherings across the region. We want to keep up this momentum this year, concentrating on developing the networks between our promoters and encouraging the use of social media to raise awareness of our events. Rural touring couldn’t work without our volunteers and we are very grateful for all of their continued support.

Young Promoters Our Young Promoters programme enables younger members of our rural communities to experience all that is involved with promoting a show as well as the opportunity to undertake an Arts Award. We currently have vacancies for new YP groups to join the team. If any young people in your village are interested in forming a YP group, contact [email protected]

Afternoons in Concert We will carry on our work to bring musicians into rural residential settings for the elderly this season. Our Afternoons in Concert performances have been very much enjoyed in recent years and we are excited to be continuing this very rewarding project.

Ticket Information Ticket prices will vary according to the type of event, but will usually be between £7 and £10 for adults and between £5 and £7 for children. If you want to book tickets, just phone the contact number for the event. And don’t forget, if you have any particular requirements of access or parking or similar, please mention these when you call, because most matters can be accommodated with some prior notice! We do try to ensure that the information contained in this leaflet is accurate, but sometimes changes are made after going to press so we recommend that you check details with the venue well in advance of the event.

Find out what’s new at VIA by visiting www.villagesinaction.co.uk, join us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/villagesinactiond or tweet us @VillagesIAction

AlIson neIlThe Fossil Lady of LymeAlison Neil has delighted Villages in Action audiences over many years with her acclaimed one-woman shows, including “The Just-William Lady”, “The Shakespeare Ladies Club” and “The Sixth Wife”. Making a very welcome return, Alison now presents the story of Mary Anning, who at the tender age of 12, discovered the first complete fossil of a prehistoric reptile in Great Britain and then continued throughout her life to make spectacular discoveries which changed the way we see the world. In this entertaining one-woman play, Mary Anning tells her story, and the story of “the fine clever men of science” who took most of the credit for her work. Her life, friendships and struggle to make her mark (and put food on the table) provides an amusing and moving theatrical treat.

“Research meticulous, writing compelling, spot on, acting marvellous” Tenby Observeralisonneil.co.uk

Angel HeArT THeATreFreya, A Viking SagaAngel Heart’s new show for 2016 is about Freya, a Viking girl and friend of the gods, who is in a bit of a pickle. She is about to become a giant’s dinner! Freya must use all her wits to escape old Gorm’s cooking pot. The rivalry between the Norse gods and the Frost Giants is brought humorously to life in this colourful re-telling of two famous Viking myths and Freya’s own saga.

Over recent years, Angel Heart have established themselves as one of the best puppet theatre companies in the South West and a firm favourite with VIA audiences - we are thrilled that ViA venues will be some of the first to host their brand new show!angelhearttheatre.com

gonZo Moose THeATre CoGreat Scott! Antarctica, 1912. Captain Scott and his men perish in their doomed attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole.

But what if this isn’t what actually happened? What if the truth was so shocking that it’s been covered up for more than a hundred years? What if Captain Scott actually perished whilst saving the world from aliens? Based on newly discovered evidence, Professor George Cranston and The Brinkley Conspiracy Society come together to reconstruct Scott’s last days and reveal the explosive truth about what really happened at the bottom of the world. Featuring a desolate landscape full of nothing but snow, frozen beards, giant penguins and of course, aliens.

From much-loved ViA favourites, the company that brought you What The Dickens? and I’m An Aristocrat, Get Me Out Of Here! now introduce their most adventurous production yet. This is anarchic comedy on an epic scale!gonzomoose.co.uk

broKen sPeCTAClesHead in the Clouds

Come on an odyssey of the skies and discover the incredible life and adventures of France’s first female aviator, otherwise known as ‘The Fiancée of Danger.’ Told through puppetry, story-telling and physical theatre with live piano, accordion and guitar, this is the greatest true story that history

ever forgot. Head in the Clouds is a warm, gentle, and genuinely enjoyable solo show that explores the story of Marie Marvingt, a French woman from the 1800’s whose key desire, following her mother’s death, is to learn to fly; first metaphorically and then literally. Based on a true story, Marie does indeed fulfil her wish, and much more besides, including developing the first Air Ambulance.

Aimed at all ages, the show starts with live music while the audience gathers, followed by the hour-long performance. After an interval, there will be more music and a chance to try some French dances, so bring your dancing shoes! brokenspectacles.com

PuPPeTCrAFT THeATreMonkeyFavourites with VIA audiences for many years, PuppetCraft are back with their magical family show, Monkey, based on the Chinese epic story and with a script written by the wonderful poet Michael Rosen, Childrens Laureate 2007 to 2009. Monkey is the most popular figure in all Chinese literature, loved for centuries by young people and adults alike. His story is found in a classic sixteenth-century novel, The Journey to the West (Xi You Ji or Hsi Yu Chi), as well as in countless later adaptations, from Chinese opera to comic books.

Stunning string puppets, antique shadow puppets and live music tell the story of the birth and comic adventures of Monkey, the fantastical and rebellious super-hero. “Nothing less than bewitching.” The Stagepuppetcraft.co.uk

MerVYn sTuTTer An Evening with Mervyn StutterFounder member of The Flying Pickets, the hilarious Mervyn Stutter has worked on Radio, TV, in theatre and Cabaret and can tell a cracking story, sing songs, poke fun at himself and at the Baby Boomer generation, make people laugh (a lot) and even possibly inject a moment of reflection into the evening. For good reason, therefore, Mervyn is fast becoming an institution in village halls across the UK!

The sixties generation is a huge social group that refuses to grow old gracefully. When Mervyn turned 45, he created the highly successful Rock and Roll comedy series called “Love 40 – New Balls Please” which ran for three series on Radio Two. He then wrote and starred in “Getting nowhere Fast” on Radio 4, the story of Merv, the menopausal Flower Child in the 21st Century. Mervyn continues to mine this rich vein of humour in a slick, hilarious performance that never fails to win over his audience. Mervyn’s sometimes wicked but always affectionate humour brings warmth and joy to an audience that is happy to laugh both at his life and their own.

Crossing boundaries with a refreshing honesty and evocative lyricism, Namvula’s music draws you into different worlds, yet remains firmly rooted in African soil and in the storytelling traditions of folk music.

Singing in Zambian languages, English, Portuguese and French, Namvula speaks out on issues facing modern-day Africa, as well as exploring stories about society, life and love. She has worked with some of the UK’s most respected African and jazz musicians, including bassist Liran Donin, percussionist Mamadou Sarr and acclaimed Ghanaian guitarist Alfred ‘Kari’ Bannerman.

JAMes FInDlAY TrIo Folk MusicOn 4th December 2009, James Findlay walked away with the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2010. His amazing voice and distinctive guitar and fiddle playing stood out among a very strong group of contenders. In a short space of time, James has developed a strong stage presence all of his own - warmly charismatic with that sparkle of personality that draws a crowd along with him. Besides the Young Folk Award, James had also been a winner in the ‘New Roots’ national competition in 2008.

James’s guitar playing style shows an obvious influence from English folk guitarist Nic Jones, whose music formed a soundtrack to the Findlay household in his formative years. Martin Carthy’s rhythmic, percussive accompanying technique became a template from which James has evolved his own unique and highly accomplished style. Likewise, Dave Swarbrick has been a formative figure in James’s fiddle playing.

James is joined in his trio by the multi-instrumental talents of John Dyer and Alfie Gidley to offer an outstanding evening’s entertainment.

“James Findlay’s forthcoming album sounds timeless and bold.” Seth Lakemanjamesfindlay.co.uk

reD DIrT sKInnersCountry, Blues, Americana & Folk Music Returning to ViA after an acclaimed tour last Autumn, The Red Dirt Skinners rule-breaking individuality has led to them being the first band in history to succeed at both the British Blues Awards (Winner - Instrumentalist of the Year 2014) and the British Country Music Awards (Finalist Best New Act and People’s Choice 2013). The Skinners were also voted by UK Country Radio as one of the top ten acts of 2014.

The band’s music has seriously wide appeal and comfortably blends Country, Blues, Americana and Folk Music. Audiences the world over describe them as “refreshingly different” and from the first song of the show, it is immediately evident that Rob and Sarah love performing live. The Skinners’ close vocal harmonies have been described as “sublime” and “beyond perfection”.

sPIlTMIlK DAnCe Blast From the Past Spiltmilk Dance take audiences on a journey through the popular music, fads and fashions that have shaped British popular culture over the last 60+ years. The work takes the form of a short dance for each year since the recorded music tracks began in 1952. Each dance is inspired by a key event or trend that impacted life in British living rooms that year, and will be accompanied by the top selling song from the year. The dances are set to be fun and a little bit silly – and accessible to everyone, even if not familiar with contemporary dance. Think tea dancing with tea cups, Tupperware parties to Elvis and a love letter to Woolworth’s pick & mix sweets! A delightful show for all the family (and you’ll get a chance to dance as well!)
