VILLAGE NEWS AND VIEWS
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Let's all give a standing "O" to Kathy Shefke and Connie Vasilnek for the
outstanding August picnic. I would say they accomplished their goals. When I
arrived at home that evening I was ready to start saving money and pack my bag
for a trip to one of the fabulous places displayed!
There are still four openings on the Board for 2014. Newsletter, Historian,
Christmas Party and Nominations. It's a wonderful way to be part of a smaller
group and help determine the future course of the organization. In all of these
positions you will have the support of other board members, especially from the
wonderful lady who is currently in that particular position. In addition, the
Newsletter Chair will be given a copy of Publisher and two brains to pick; both
Sandy Freese and Sheri Redd.
Paint With Us! on October 19 is right around the corner. We will accept
registration until the next General Meeting on October 3. Registration forms
are on our website and very shortly the supply list will also be there. We will
have both the registration and supply list available for you on October
3rd. Please bring one of your first projects that you painted so our guests can
see that we have all started at the same place and how they can grow. I would
also like to ask for raffle donations. Raffles have been very popular in the past
so we would like to continue. Your donations would be greatly appreciated. I
am asking for volunteers to help set up and take down as my arm is back in its
sling and I now have a new device on my knee. I am afraid I will not be much
help that day.
Congratulations to Barbara Reinholz who placed 2nd in Portraits and 3rd in
Seasonal at the HOOT 2013 Art Show. The portrait, done from a vintage
photo, was a bridal scene with a woman holding a bouquet of roses. Her
seasonal piece was a Bobbi Takeshima Halloween pattern; a jack-o-lantern with
a black mask. Kudos also to Connie Vasilnek who submitted a piece; it was
Noah's Ark done on a chest. No ribbons for Connie this year, but we
congratulate her on having the courage to submit a piece and represent our
Chapter at HOOT.
Lastly, remember to save some pence for the Rewards Seminar in early 2014.
Linda

Spring Fling 2015
Date for Spring Fling 2015 is April 11 with set up on the 10th. At the July Board meeting the members
suggested we look into a new venue for the Spring Fling to accommodate more tables and room. Sheri Redd looked
into several places. The best two were Italian American Club and Laurel Manor.
At the August General meeting the membership discussed moving to Italian American Club, Laurel Manor, staying at
Gross Ile CC or going to Crystal Gardens. The majority voted to go to Crystal Gardens for 2015. Located at 16703
Fort Street, in Southgate. They will have enough room and more tables. (Crystal Gardens also served us while at the
GICC.)

“Painting from nature is not
copying the object; it is realizing one’s
sensations.”
“Painting is damn difficult—you always
think you’ve got it, but you haven’t!”

P.S. I couldn’t have said this one better
myself!!
Education
Diane Stiller
Arlene Linton’s seminar was stellar! It was very interesting to learn the various steps in creating the lace and how to effectively use her brush. The
conference room at the Best Western was spacious and very well lit. Instead of projecting the image on a screen, I set up the 40” TV to test it out.
Everyone thought that the clarity and color of the image was better, so I will also be using it for the Maureen McNaughton seminar. We raffled off
two pieces painted by Arlene. Donnah Jakubowski won on Saturday and Linda Morgan won on Sunday. Their pictures are in our photo section.
Nineteen individuals registered in total; 18 on Saturday and 12 on Sunday; 5 were non-members; 1 was from Ohio.
Seminar financial results:
$1,180 revenue - $2,381 expenses = $1,201 loss - $120 pence + $61 raffle = $1,260 cash loss.
The education budget was originally going to contribute $500 towards the cost of the seminar, plus whatever amount of pence was turned in. How-
ever, we needed 25 registrants per day to break even. The actual cost of the seminar came in $300 less than projected costs. We would have spent
$520 less had we been able to use the Livonia Senior Center; however, no dates were available in the last half of 2013. Despite the loss, the Educa-
tion budget is still within its budget for the year.
The next seminar is Rondi Bur’s (the Peggy Trabalka pattern) on September 28. Please note that this seminar will be held at Greenmead Historical
Park in Livonia at the Friends Meeting House. All the registrants have been given their pattern and prep instructions, as well as, a map of Green-
mead. Peggy Trabalka’s books and patterns will be on sale at the class.
Please remember to purchase your Subway lunch from Joan Mueller.
A big thanks to Nancy Silver and Leslie Williams for submitting teaching projects for 2014! At the August meeting members weighed in on the
decision as to which projects to choose and the following ones will be scheduled for 2014. I am working with Nancy and Leslie on the dates.

I am planning to have members help to select the projects for Lydia Steeves at the October meeting.
Since Maureen McNaughton’s seminar will be the last held in the United States, I would like to do something special to acknowledge her influence
on decorative painting. I would like members to bring projects that they have painted using Maureen’s patterns and we will set up a special Show
and Tell table in her honor.
Paint with Us! 2014
In 2014, the annual Paint with Us! Event will undergo a significant change. Paint with Us! classes will be held multiple times during the year, in-
stead of just once a year. At the October meeting Linda Christopher and Diane Stiller will ask for volunteers to form a small committee to suggest
ideas and to help develop the program for 2014. Diane is interested in submitting an application to SDP for a grant to cover some of the costs. We
would like to provide all of the painting supplies, including paint and brushes to the students. We are asking all of our members to think hard and
suggest or submit projects that would be suitable. We are also looking for instructors. Some of the projects that we were thinking about would be
painting on T-shirts, sweatshirts, or pillowcases; glass blocks; real (or not) pumpkins; gourds; banners. We would like to share our love of painting
and hopefully attract new members.
Here’s a sample of what our members brought to the August, 2013 General Meeting
