PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME Dear Members of the Villanova College Family, Recently at the College Assembly I recounted the story of Jim Martin, the youngest Anzac. Jim was a strapping country boy, big for his age who enlisted in the Army at the age of 14. Jim’s father was unable to enlist due to injuries he sustained on the farm so Jim took it upon himself to join up in his father’s place to play his part in defending the country. We don’t know a tremendous amount about Jim and his time at Gallipoli. The records tell us that Jim died on the 25th October, 1915 on board a hospital ship anchored in Anzac Cove. He was buried at sea. Jim was 14 years and nine months old when he passed away. On Monday, 25 April there will be many gatherings where we, as a nation remember the men and women who made the supreme sacrifice for our country. We honour those who served and those who continue to serve in the Armed Forces. The College has been invited by the Coorparoo RSL to join in the march from Baragoola Street, Coorparoo to the Coorparoo RSL for the Anzac Day service. Students have been asked to wear full academicl uniform and hat to the march. Please assemble at the corner of Old Cleveland Road and Baragoola Street at 7:30am, with the march to conclude at 8am. On Tuesday 19th April the new Daniel O’Connor Recording Studio was opened and commissioned at a simple ceremony attended by Dan’s family. Dan was a student at Villanova College from 1984 until 1991. It was here that his love for music was ignited and developed. Dan learnt clarinet, French horn, violin and guitar. After school, music became the core of Dan’s life and he formed a band, “Zephyr Timbre”, which gained national recognition. Following this success, Dan’s passion became running a recording studio. Tragically Dan was called to Jesus on 16th October, 2010. The recording studio was made possible through the generous support of Dan’s family. The students and staff of Villanova College are extremely appreciative of the new facility to complement the music program. This Saturday the five Year Eleven students who participated in the exchange to St Rita’s College, Chicago will return home. The exchange is part of our expanding international focus for our College to connect with Augustinian communities from across the world. Later this year five students from St Rita’s College will spend two weeks experiencing school life at Villanova College and the hospitality of our Brisbane families. We continue to keep in our prayers the members of our community who are unwell at this time and those who are in need of God’s love and mercy. HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLOn Monday there were some bright-eyed boys walking very closely to Mum and Dad as they entered through the College gates for our Open Day tours. Over 300 families chose to come and see our students working in their normal day to day routine. We deliberately choose to keep the boys spontaneous in their responses to eager questions and naturally “ready” to give answers about life at Villanova, just as a nine to twelve year old boy should. Prospective parents and their children marvelled and wondered about how many boys there were from Year 5-12, how often the BYODs were being used, what the shared spaces were for and what the boys loved most about walking through the doors each day. Just quietly, Mrs Dot Blair should feel most proud to know that the College Tuckshop is a firm favourite and our staff should feel very flattered that they came in a close second. What I always love about Open Day is the enthusiasm and eagerness of the families who come along, wanting the very best opportunities for their sons. There is a similar underlying tone in each question – will my son be noticed, be safe and be seen? With staff and students answering every question it was clear to every College Leadership Team member that we certainly tick those queries through various pastoral, academic and co-curricular opportunities. With both home and school working together, our sons have every possible chance to succeed in life.

Tonight in Year 6 we honour our Mums at our Mother/Son Evening at 6pm which includes a sit down dinner in Goold Hall that is provided with full silver service by our Senior Students with Mr Tony Rolls and Ms Lynda Lecatsas. It promises to be a night of the fondest memories as we explore the many ways we love everything our Mums do with us and for us in life. The boys have some great insights into what they know about how Mums work their magic and our photos that take us down memory lane are bound to have some of us shedding a tear or two. It is essential to personally thank Mrs Maria Mascadri for her tireless perfectionism with the invitations, special attention to details (you’ll see this tonight on the dining tables I promise) and her oversight of all things from questions to curling ribbon etiquette. Maria is a mother of two amazing sons – Julian and Michael – and she is certainly an inspiration to the boundless hours, energy, love and treats that a Mum seems to be able to provide with ease. My mum, Rachel, is now enjoying retirement and

about to embark upon a three month trip to Europe with her brother and his wife. She rings every week, on the landline (of course) to hear about our lives and achievements. There’s nothing she won’t do for her family and friends and this includes cheering on the Dockers for my wife even though she’s an avid Eagles fan. Mrs Sue Lawson has been the perfect substitute for 6 Green and when she speaks about her family and wonderful grandchildren there’s a joy like no other. We have been blessed to have such a vibrant and loving person whilst Mike and Noni Lubans bond with Polly Sue at home. To every Mum that is near, far or watching from God’s heaven above – you are the most precious and incredible examples of Mother Mary we have had the divine right to know.

In Year 5, I’ve been able to catch some amazing conversations the boys have been having about “conscience” and knowing what is “right”, “just” and “fair” in everyday life. Through movie and YouTube clips these students have begun to explore what it means to do the right thing because it simply is the right thing to do if we follow the Word of Jesus. There’s the opinion of what feels good for ourselves in every situation – what we deserve, what is our turn and what we should strive for – and these are healthy in many situations. How do we go beyond ourselves and seek opportunities to make things amazing for other people with no expectations of anything in return? Do we say I love you to our nearest or look to feed a stranger who is hungry? Do we offer to open a door when someone has things in their hands? Do we notice when others could enjoy a smile and greeting? Having a conscience takes selflessness and effort – it speaks volumes about an individual and I’m proud our boys are exposed to such a concept as part of their curriculum.

Boys, this week you are making us all so proud and together with your parents, we see you, you are safe and you are valued.

Mr Stephen Rouhliadeff, Head of Junior School

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

5th Easter Sunday, 24th April

Did you know?

• In the Gospel of John, when Jesus speaks of being glorified or exalted, he is referring to his death on the cross. For John, this is the moment of supreme triumph for Jesus.

Question of the Week. John 13:31-35.

Jesus said: ‘I give you a new commandment: love one another; just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples.’

How will people know that you are a disciple of Jesus?

Page 3: VILLA VIEW THE

MINISTRYMovers and Shakers Leadership Camp

During the first week of the Easter holidays, five Year 11 students attended the annual Leadership Formation camp for Catholic students from all over Queensland. Daniel Duskovic, Matt Davies, Zac Edwards, Cristian Gutierrez and Fabrice Ragoo threw themselves into the four day event in Toowoomba with open hearts and minds. It was noticeable how ready they were to learn from the wide range of activities, challenges and reflections, in partnership with like-minded young people from Roma to Rockhampton. Their experience concluded with a special Mass of commissioning celebrated by Bishop Robert McGuckin of Toowoomba.

Vinnies High Schools’ Social Justice Day

A similarly positive-minded team of Year 10 and 11 students attended the Social Justice Day at Clairvaux McKillop on Thursday, 14th April. Many Senior School students from across Brisbane participated in well-conceived learning activities, designed to provoke thought and allow for deeper understanding of what people experience at the margins of society. In this regard, one of the “games” was a hut building competition with cardboard and masking tape, reflecting in a small way the need to build a shelter in a refugee camp. Different cards were dealt to each “family” – for example the sudden need to help a family member with cholera or dysentery. The students reflected deeply on the activity, for example in seeing that it need not have been treated as a competition. The strong focus on refugees is of course timely with the anticipated arrival in Brisbane of 12,000 Syrian refugees. The Social Justice Day helped students hear a different voice from the news media emphasis on border protection and ISIS.

I would like to share with you two very different voices which staff were invited to listen to at the Staff Professional Development day at the beginning of term:

• Pope Francis leads by example in bringing 12 Syrian refugees back from Lesbos with him after his visit last week for them to live in the Vatican apartments. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/apr/17/the-guardian-view-on-pope-francis-in-lesbos-he-must-change-hearts

• Richard Flanagan, Australian Booker Prize winner, provides a searing account of his journey to meet Syrian refugees in the huge refugee camp in the Bekaa valley (Lebanon), in Lesbos and on the Serbian border. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/05/great-syrian-refugee-crisis-exodus-epic-inconceivable-witness-lebos-islamic-state

Invitation to join the Villanova contingent for local ANZAC March

All students, from Years 5 to 12, are warmly invited to join the contingent of Villanova students who will march in honour of the ANZACs on the morning of Monday, 25th April. At the invitation of Coorparoo RSL, we have been given the privilege of joining the march.

The arrangements are that students are to wear full academic uniform and meet on Baragoola Street, near the corner of Old Cleveland Road, at 7:30 am. We will have the College Banner as a rallying point. We will march round the corner to the Coorparoo RSL in Holdsworth Street. The formal service begins at 8am and will conclude by 9am.

MUSICRecording Studio Dedication – Daniel O’Connor

On Tuesday morning, we had the wonderful honour of dedicating the new recording studio in celebration of the life of Old Boy and musician, Daniel O’Connor. Clive and Kaye O’Connor, Daniel’s parents, gave a generous bequest to the College with the hope that we create opportunities for students with a talent for music have access to those experiences that guided Dan’s life path. With the family’s blessing, a recording studio was constructed in the music teaching space underneath Goold Hall.

With representatives from Dan’s family, including his son Aiden (Year 7), Keith Druery, and the College Leadership team, Fr. Peter Wienke, and representatives from the Music team, we were given the opportunity to witness the capabilities and potential this space provides for our students. Mr Pat Zietsch and members of our Irish Ensemble demonstrated the recording capabilities, and Mrs Tucker’s Year 10 AES class demonstrated the lessons and activities students will be undertaking to ensure they are trained appropriately to use the studio. The tour concluded with a fitting dedication led by Fr. Peter: a celebration of Dan’s life and his spirit that found happiness in music, communicating hope that this may lead others through this place on a similar path of self-realisation and fulfilment.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the O’Connor’s for their generous gift and their continued stewardship of music at Villanova. Thank you to Mr Pat Zietsch, Mrs Belinda Tucker, and Mr Paul Orrell for their direction in driving this project, and all that were able to join the family for this important occasion.

Ensemble Rehearsals

All ensemble rehearsals have commenced and I would like to thank all students for their endeavours with regard to attendance and preparation for these vital sessions. I have been notified of a couple of exceptions to our rehearsal schedule: Percussion Ensemble 2 are currently not rehearsing – students and families will be advised of any change here.

Symphony Orchestra will commence for our students with a pep-session on Friday, 6th May from 3:15-4:15pm for Villanova Students. We will continue our regular Monday rehearsals from Monday, 9th May as per the rehearsal schedule.

Attendance

We have introduced a policy whereby teachers and ensemble directors have been asked to send an email home should a student have an

unexplained absence for ensemble and or lessons. We ask that families continue to contact the teacher concerned via email and phone the Music Office before school. Should you receive an email, please take this as an opportunity to touch base with your son and check why the lesson may have been missed and develop a proactive plan to ensure this is not a regular occurance. Should you have any concerns, please contact me or your son’s teacher through the Music Office.

Enrolment

We have some space available for students wishing to take up instrumental tuition on all instruments (including voice) for Term Two; more information is available from the Music Office.

We have introduced a change to one of our processes regarding enrolment. From Thursday, 21st April all cancellation of enrolments will require a meeting between the student, parent/guardian and Director of Music. As per policy, fees will be payable for three weeks beyond the date of cancellation. Whilst this may be an unusual change in policy, this will allow us to best determine how effectively we were able to meet the musical and developmental needs of your son and all students enrolled in the program, and provide a source of data for our department moving forward. All appointments regarding enrolment cancellations are to be made through the Music Office.

Entertainment Books

All students in Years 5 and 6 have received a physical copy of this year’s Entertainment book. If your son is in Year 5 and 6 and you have pre-sold physical copies of the book, this book has been included in the presale tally and has been given to you for distribution. Should you not wish to purchase an Entertainment book, we would appreciate it if you could return the book to the Music Office as soon as possible. If you purchase a digital copy please return the physical copy sent home.

The drive continues and books are available for sale from the College website, Music Office and on the Villanova Music Facebook page. We encourage you to continue to fundraise and sell both physical and digital copies. Please refer to page seven of the newsletter for further information.

Last Friday the College held a Sports Awards Assembly. At the assembly we had the chance as a College community to publicly acknowledge those students who were nominated by their coaches to receive awards for the Trimester One sports program. This included cricket, volleyball and swimming. Over 230 awards were presented including awards to the premiership/undefeated teams. It was great to see a large number of parents and friends in attendace to support the boys and the College.

The assembly was also an opportunity to acknowledge and pay tribute to the College’s major sporting achievements during Trimester One which included nine undefeated cricket teams in Year 5 and 6 and five AIC premierships plus one non-aggregate premiership. This resulted in Villa taking out first place in the overall cricket aggregate, which is a great achievement.

As a whole there were significant improvements in our volleyball results. Although we did not win a volleyball premiership the College improved significantly from last season gaining fourth position in the overall aggregate as well as a number of teams placed in the top three.

Our swimming program also showed significant improvement as testified by an overall second place in the Year 5 and 6 aggregate (only few points way from first place). As well as many first places achieved on the day of the AIC Championship which included a total of seven AIC swim records broken by Villa students.

There is no doubt that it is nice to receive sporting awards and I hope the recipients felt proud of themselves. Although the College hopes that Villa’s greatest sports award is offered to all, that is, the opportunity for all students to get involved and to slip on the green and gold and represent their College. I congratulate every player, coach and manager who participated in the sports program last term and I thank them for their efforts.

It was great to see the College participate in a first full round of AIC Chess, Rugby and Football trials over the weekend versus St Patrick’s College. This weekend Villa will play St Laurence’s (SLC) in another full round of trials. Please be aware that SLC will host all Year 5-12 rugby games and Year 9-12 football games at Runcorn this weekend. Villa will only host Year 5-8 football at Villa Park this weekend.

As this is another trial weekend I again ask all (parents especially) to be patient with the selection process. Coaches are sorting through all players and are trialling different combinations in an effort to get the teams right for round 1 of the AIC competition. The reality is that some boys will be disappointed as some tough decisions will be made. The best way to deal with this matter is to show resilience and work even harder at training. Coaches have been asked to monitor all players and change teams weekly based on

player performance, attendance and attitude.

Please be reminded that the next two weekends are long weekends. It is imperative that the boys make themselves available to play before they depart on any family trips away. This issue was clearly stated on the rugby/football/chess sign-on forms which all players and parents signed.

Best wishes to all this weekend versus St Laurence’s College. Enjoy!

Uniform Expectations – Players and Spectators

All players are to wear the complete rugby and football playing uniform as published below. Football players should not wear the basketball or PE shorts, they must wear the College football shorts.

Please note that all boys who attend the Year 9-12 rugby and football fixtures on the weekend as a spectator must wear the College academic uniform including the tie. Students are to attend their games in playing uniform. If students intend to stay and support other teams at the Year 9-12 venue they must get changed into their academic uniform.

Students who are playing at the Year 5-8 venue may be permitted to wear their playing uniform before and after their games. However, if the younger boys (Year 5-8) wish to travel and support the Year 9-12 matches, particularly the first games, they must change into the academic uniform.

Players of both the 1st XI football and 1st XV rugby teams must attend the venue in full academic uniform, including white shirt (including boys who are in Year 10 or 11), tie and blazer. Long grey pants are preferred. This same uniform is to be worn to all post match functions.

It is paramount that the parent body support the College in ensuring that these expectations are met. Wearing the correct uniform appropriately is the standard which is expected.

AIC Chess Trial v St Laurence’s, Friday 22nd April

AIC Chess trials will be hosted by Villanova in the College Library this Friday afternoon. Games commence at 4pm until round 5.30pm. Best wishes to all team members!

AIC Rugby and Football Trials v St Laurence’s, Saturday 23rd April – Times and Venues

All times and venues for this weekend’s trial fixtures v St Laurence’s College (SLC) are available on the College website. Please note that Year 5-8 football teams will play at home and Year 9-12 teams as well as all Year 5-12 rugby teams will play away v SLC at Runcorn.

AIC Rugby, Football and Chess Teams

All AIC teams will be posted on the College website from week to week. All coaches have been advised to select teams based on player performance, attitude and attendance at training. The College strongly encourages the movement of players from team to team each week if warranted and no position from the 1st to Year 5 is guaranteed throughout the season. We hope this encourages a friendly rivalry for positions within a cohort and rewards those players who have trained hard and performed well.

Villa Park Canteen – AIC Rugby and Football

The Year 5-8 football teams play at Villa Park this Saturday and we are asking for parents to once again help out by volunteering their time. The BBQ will fire up at 6:30am and it is usually in the first hour that we need the most assistance to prepare and cook the food. Please drop your son off and help out.

Although at times the canteen/bbq may look like they have enough helpers, please come and offer your time as some of those volunteers may need to get to their son’s games. The canteen/bbq during the Football/Rugby season is the Sports Club’s main source of income and it can only operate with the help of Villa parents (both football and rugby). Please come along and help out, meet some new friends and catch-up on what’s going on around the school. Please note that mouthguards, strapping tape and tape for socks are available for purchase at the canteen too. See you Saturday.

ELEARNINGICT Skill of the Week - Google Drive Synchronisation and File/Folder Management

We commence our ICT skills focus with possibly the most important skill of all - organisation. Students need to have an organised space to match an organised mind! As students move through their schooling years, their drive spaces fill up with the accumulation of task sheets, downloads, files and projects from the past. Having a clear “archiving” strategy will help students find important files, archive past work and know where to locate resources when needed. Alphanumeric systems can make this task somewhat easier. Default ordering of files and folders on Macs and PCs is numerically first and alphabetically second. In addition, other characters can precede alphanumeric ordering (square, round and squiggly brackets, underscores, !, @, % etc). Some students prefer to “pin” folders to the top of their Google Drive like _assessment or !urgent work - such naming conventions ensure these folders (or files) always appear at the top of the folders and can be quickly accessed.

It may surprise parents to know that many students have the most number of files in two problematic locations: Desktop and Downloads. This is because most students drag and drop files to the desktop or download them from Moodle and internet/browser locations. The obvious issue here is neither location is safe because it is outside a Google Drive or cloud storage space. For example, on most laptops the Google Drive folder is at: C:/Users/Name/Google Drive/. Anything within that folder can be synced depending on sync settings. But Desktop and

Download files are located at: C:/Users/Name/Desktop and C:/Users/Name/Downloads. This is further complicated with the My Documents folder which is usually located at C:/Users/Name/My Documents. Again, this is not a secure location if the laptop HDD fails. Best practice would be to think of the Desktop and Downloads folders (even My Documents) as “transient” spaces for temporary use only. At some point students should either delete or move the files to backed-up and synced locations within C:/Users/Name/Google Drive. As an example the image below shows my Users folder where only Google Drive is being synced with the cloud storage. Anything else is stored physically on the laptop and at risk of permanent loss.

Extensive information regarding file and folder management and Google Drive sync settings has been posted to Moodle this week. I would encourage parents to ask their sons if they have worked through the Moodle resources and, as a result, reflected on their file and folder management and sync settings to ensure they are storing, accessing and securing their digital work effectively.
