extendinG the block

the proJect tries to FulFill its role as a landmark, While at the same time FolloWinG quite strict detail plan reGulations and economical pressure. the toWer stars-out as reGulated in the detail plan, by continuinG the urban block on the bouleVard side. (no hiGher construction is alloWed For this part.)

extendinG the hiGrise

the solution Was to extend the toWer oVer the road, acquirinG the much needed space For an economically Viable proJect, While at the same time keepinG the WaterFront public. We belieVe the place underneath the toWer has a lot oF ten-sion and Would characteriZe the WaterFront as Well as GiVe siGniFicance to the rather loW “land-mark”. thin shape and some small cuts to the Ge-neric Volume proVides Good liGhtinG conditions and spectacular VieWs to all apartments in the toWer.

“roW house”

thin proFile required the toWer to be lonGer in the other direction, and the heiGht limit made the buildinG appear quite bulky alonG the bouleVard. the concept oF roW houses Was adopted, and the deVelopment Was diVided to six diFFerent parts by ma-terials and detail styles.this Verticality to an extent broke doWn the massiVe Volume, GaVe it a resemblance to a FlaG. the identity oF the toWer as a Whole is tied to the toWn’s history oF build-inGs and industry: buildinG sections resemble sail, porcelain, Wood, slaG stone and brick ). it Further GiVes the identity to its residents: on the same Floor all the apart-ments are oF diFFerent materials and GiVes the sense oF a “your” apartment not only From inside but also From the outside.

hiGhrise problem

the site For the 12 story toWer is diVided by the detail plan amonG the both sides oF the street. While tryinG to build a toWer that in the block, the space al-loWed For the hiGh-rise con-struction is Very limited. this Would proVe to be uneconomical and insiGniFicant, While build-inG on the other side oF the road as a Free standinG toWer Would priVatiZe and obstruct the pub-lic WaterFront.

the proposal is built around Four core concepts: urban space, local identity, housinG quality and urban liFe. the placement oF the buildinG re-leases the WaterFront and makes it public and creates a Fund For liFe alonG the bouleVard park and pier. the buildinG is narroW and elonGated, resemblinG a FlaG. it is diVided into Vertical Fields oF construction materials related to GäVle’s history both in buildinGs and industry (Wood, sails, porcelain, slaG stone and brick) to create a local connection and identity. the slimness oF the house GiVes Very Good liGhtinG conditions and most apartments haVe a panoramic VieW. smart Floor plans oFFer extraordinary qualities For eVery apartment.

idea

historical latVian national art museum (lnma) buildinG is a Very important and deVeloped siGn oF the central part oF the toWn. the neW WinG oF the buildinG must not interFere With the historical buildinG’s dominant position, and disappear in the trees oF the park. at the same time, it should GiVe a neW impulse to the reVital-iZation oF the museum and park. the thematic exhibitions orGaniZed by local and ForeiGn curators is a maJor recoVery proGram For the museum. it becomes neces-sary than in addition to utilitarian rooms, the neW WinG should oFFer a spacious exhibition hall For chanGeable expositions. the neW WinG also Would enrich the museum With public spaces and turn its Face to the esplanade and doWntoWn.

site plan

the neW buildinG is situated in the site due to existinG urban and runWay compo-sition, pedestrian moVements and the “alley oF horsemen” layout. rectanGular Volume extends the historic buildinG lnma structure in reGular Fashion, but es-planade and Green channels cut out parts that intersect them. We oFFer a resto-ration oF “alley oF horsemen’ and extend it to the academy oF arts . a neW entrance to the museum is desiGned by the esplanade side, operated throuGh the rooF - ter-race, but it also can be accessed From kr.Valdemara and eliZabetes street corner. the rooF terrace can be used as an outdoor sculpture exhibition.

Volume

lnma historic buildinG must be careFully restored and not be chanGed With any neW elements. the neW WinG connects With the historical museum trouGh a Win-doW under the main staircase by a slender Gallery bridGe. neW proJect WaVes With respect to the oriGinal buildinG, hiGhliGhtinG all oF its adVantaGes and coVerinG up toneless socle From the esplanade side. orGanic WaVe like Volume appeared While ForminG the external and internal spaces in the creatiVe process. “alley oF horsemen” diVides the neW extension into tWo parts Which are connected With a bridGe on the First Floor. soFtly descendinG ramp toWards kr.Valdemara and eliZ-abetes streets does not compete With the historic buildinG’s entrance, but subtly shoWs the possibility oF enterinG into the neW part oF the museum and outdoor exposition.

in this particular Vilnius situation, the Footprints oF the past are merGed With the modern city planninG results. the neiGhborinG national art Gallery is unquestionably dominant in its cultural and architectural aspects. this is Why it is so important For neW modern art center Find its oWn Face, and not to compete With the locations surroundinGs, namely the national art Gallery.

the historical street and remains oF the old Gardens in the location in-spired the idea to think oF the neW modern art museum as a Garden oF art. the main public space is Formed From a remaininG cultiVated Garden on the hill, While the Volume oF the museum coVers it From the preVailinG south-West Winds, and the Workshop studio politely separates it From direct in-Fluence From the neiGhborinG national Gallery.

2 Floor pedestal part oF the buildinG accumulates enerGy oF the Green slope, Forms “upes” streets perimeter and its intersection With the cross-street. three reGular cubes, are positioned on the slopes and pedestal Forms an sensitiVe approach to the buildinGs silhouette. restrained Fa-cade composition is complimented With Vertices oF blinds.

Whole beton hala WaterFront center territory is de-siGned For the pedestrians. to Get on the beton hala rooF From the riVerFront is possible by three connections: tWo oF them are on the sides oF beton hala and one rooF coVered entrance is in the middle oF the preserVed structure. this rooF could be used as mini amphitheater, Where bottom pad is extended toWards the saVa riVer as a balcony. the main pedestrian FloWs From the riVerFront are collected in the middle oF WaterFront center terri-tory Where trouGh the second Floor coVered passaGe it is possible to Go directly to the VoJVode boJoVJca bou-leVard, underGround parkinG, Gallery, tourist inForma-tion point, commercial areas or cross VoJVode boJoVica bouleVard With the pedestrian bridGe. on the leVel oF pe-destrian bridGe there is a tram stop For Further connec-tions to the city or it is possible to choose From a FeW diF-Ferent pedestrian paths to Go to the belGrade Fortress or kalemeGdan park.

the proJect compliments the common rectanGle container modular sytems, by introducinG a more Flexible and or-Ganic module Generation.

the selected trapeZoid shaped container can be used in traditional straiGht buildinGs but at the same time it has the ability to Form curVes oF Various curVatures. the anGle oF the module is selected so one could Form Various closed structures With inner courtyards. other dimensions Was se-lected With reGard to transportation and Functionality.

parametric model Was used to explore diF-Ferent possibilities and shapes. the diGital model Would try to FolloW a predeFined de-sirable curVe as much as the containers Ge-ometry Would alloW. by tWeakinG the curVe or the dimensions oF the module one could Fine-tune the General dimensions oF the con-tainer as Well as the oVerall Form oF the buildinG.

While the sliGht chanGes to the tradi-tional container’s Geometry resulted in a rather diFFerent buildinG as a Whole, but the inner planninG solu-tions remain similar to those existinG.

essentially there only a FeW types oF mod-ules pre-desiGnated For a certain actiVity and they are multiplied Where needed.

in this particular plan the buildinG three units on the Ground Floor, a kitchen With easy access to the road, and staFF rooms.

on the second Floor there are tWo units For smaller children and a common play and actiVity area Which is also connected to a south FacinG terrace. this Way only the biGGer children haVe to use the stairs more Frequently and the preschool Gets a controllable outside area For children to play in.

numerous proposals oF diFFerent module Ge-ometries Was analysed resultinG in many deriVa-tions oF the basic buildinG idea For this particu-lar area.

the desiGn is my indiVidual proJect, produced in Free time durinG 2009 and 2010 to in-crease the knoWledGe oF creatinG and VisualiZinG complex Forms, analyZinG non tra-ditional spaces and Volumes, producinG architecture that is in a stronG relationship With its surroundinGs.

site: the proJect Was desiGned near my hometoWn oF Jurbarkas in a Forest by the riVer imsre. the sites Features a terrain that oFFers panoramas to the imsre riVer Valley and dense Woods, but at the same time is clear oF any bushes and hedGes.

the house Form is deriVed From the idea that the proJect is situated in a land that essentially be-lonGs to a Forest. it Was desiGned With respect to the natural surroundinGs. house Form aVoids trees, by tWistinG on its axis and in this Way shoWinG the supremacy oF the Woods and a eFFort to aVoid disruptinG the natural Fabric oF the Forrest. the orGanic Form and natural materials blend in With surroundinGs. at the same time this is a Great opportunity to explore orGanic and non-traditional architectural spaces and balance betWeen Function and Form.
