The National YouthMeeting (NYM) for 2009had around 15 delegates fromJacksonville. This is specialbecause any one chapterusually does not have many
people attend a mini camp. Our very own Jacksonville,FL always has one of the bestturnouts for local and nationalmini camps. This year inAtlanta, GA we hadanother successfulrun at NYM.
The theme was“bring your spork”,which dealt withcompetitive eating. This showed the kidswho attended whatthe negative effects ofexcess consumptionare. Excess is notonly dealing with toolittle of something, butalso too much. Theactivities that werecreated for thisyear’s themeconsisted of onesthat emphasized theimportance of
National Youth Meetingbalance. The activitiesdone were followedup by discussions thatmade each individualthink about what hadjust happened andhow that relates to life.
The NationalYouth meetingbenefits the kids inexposure to CISVand the greatmessages it sends tothe world’s up andcoming generation, and it benefits them inthe ways offriendships. Kids fromJacksonville are close withthose of Maine, and Texas. This sort of thing is hard tocome by with people still inelementary and high school.CISV is an opportunity forchildren all over the world toshare ideas for the world.

When 30 kids withfamily ties to Korea, China,Peru, Venezuela, Cuba,Burma and Africa met twoweeks ago at FletcherMiddle School, they werestrangers.
When they leave to-day, after attending aChildren's InternationalSummer Villages residentialcamp at the school, manywill be lifelong friends.
They've bunked to-gether in classrooms con-verted into bedrooms. Theyate meals together. And theyplayed games that exercisedthem socially, emotionallyand physically.
The aim was for thekids, who are all 11 yearsold, to understand other cul-tures in ways that few kidstheir age ever could.
"It changes your per-spective on things," saidBetty Lu, 17, a junior coun-selor whowas born inChina andnow lives inJacksonville.
S i n c eshe partici-pated as acamper fiveyears ago,Lu saidshe's kept intouch withthe friendsshe made.
" T h epeople you meet are amaz-ing," she said. "Everyonelooks different and are fromdifferent countries. But in-side, they all want the samegoal: love, peace and hap-

Children's InternationalSummer Villages is a volun-

The organization offersseveral camp programs inthe Jacksonville area everysummer.
One of the camps is afour-week program for kidsfrom a variety of foreigncountries.
Various community or-ganizations nominate camp-ers for the program, said di-rector Susan Gordon.

counselors, the kids partici-pated in daily planned activi-ties, including silly games
such as "Jungle Fe-ver" Wednesdaymorning.
They ran aroundshaking hands, andone person, who was"it," infected others, causing them to keelover "dead."
Other activitieswere more "intense,and serious."
That afternoonthey were slated toparticipate in a role-playing game that
teaches how it feels to be ste-reotyped.
The kids were to wearsigns on their backs, label-ing them as "homeless," or"rock star" or "new immi-grant."
The game features fourfestive parties, and each kidhas to try to join the parties.
Some kids get upset,Gordon said. Some mightcry.
"For an 11-year old, it'shard to understand theworld," she said. "But thisway, they feel it."

July 2009, a monthunlike any other. Afterweeks ofanticipation, afrenzy ofcleaning andpreparation, and muche x c i t e m e n tfrom thedelegates andtheir families, the plane from Guangzhou,China arrived at theJacksonville airport on July12th. The tension wasmounting in the air, weclutched the welcomebanner, and watched thepeople stroll out of security, continually scanning thehallway for signs of our
partners. People wouldcome up to us and say, “Wejust saw them. They’recoming now!” and ourdelegation would scream. When I first saw mypartner, Linda, I couldhardly believe what was

enthusiastic, crazy, fun and ayounger sister. She lovedspicy food, gorillas, and fruitsalad!
Linda’s visit was notonly an AMAZINGexperience, but also a greatlearning opportunity for my

Even before weboarded the plane toGermany, Ithink we allknew it wasgoing to be ag r e a ts u m m e rcamp. Wehad met mostof theparticipantso nFacebook inthe weeksleading up toour three-week stay, so we already feltreally close. Our hopes for afun time were assured by thefirst night, as we all stayed uplate singing, learning eachother’s languages, andgetting to know eachother….
The Leaving FootprintsSummer Camp 2009 in Kiel,Germany was the mostincredible experience of my

lifetime. Between simulationactivities, excursions,
scavenger hunts, discussions, and plenty oftrips to the market, Ibecame best friends withpeople from Brazil, China,Germany, Italy, Lebanon,Norway, Spain, andSweden. We playedChinese Masters, TheKilling Game, and House ofFeelings. Of course we hada Gala Night, where we all
dressed up and escorted ourdates to a night of dancing
and fun. The games andactivities were bothentertaining and eye-opening, and our campincluded a reoccurringtheme of frogs and cows.
Through our ups anddowns we stuck together, even when the Staff yelledat us to clean our rooms, even when we wereforced to perform a

Thanks to CISV forbringing together so manyamazing people for such awonderful event. I beginevery day with high hopes toone day visit my friendsagain.

There were a lot of things I liked about village. I loved eatingunusual foods, especially the pasta. I learned a lot of new energizers;my favorite was “Brown Squirrel”. My host family took us to thestock yards and I saw real cowboys. I’m staying in touch witheveryone from camp, but my favorite new friend was from Denmark.

Village was a blast! It was an inspiring and extremelymemorable experiencethat definitely changedthe way I look atcountries and cultures. Imet lifelong friends andthe site (Ford Castle)made the village “comealive” with new things. Ihope that anyone thathas the opportunity to goto village goes and hasas great of a time as Idid (although that ishighly unlikely, becausewords can’t even explainthe experience.)
