Women’s Basketball Hits Road For Two More The Vikings will continue Horizon League play this weekend, as they travel to Valparaiso and Butler for a pair of contests. CSU will first face the Crusaders at 8:05 p.m. EST on Thursday (Jan. 5) and will then take on Butler at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 7). CSU enters the week at 5-7 overall and 0-1 in league play. Last week CSU opened league play at Youngstown State on Satur-day (Dec. 31), as the Vikings fell to the Penguins, 70-48. Shalonda Winton posted her fourth double-double of the season at YSU, recording 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Imani Gordon also tallied double-digits for the Vikings, adding 14 points. On the season CSU has three players averaging in double figures, led by Destinee Blue who averages 13.7 points per game. Joining her are Winton (12.4 ppg) and Takima Keane (11.0 ppg). After seven weeks of play, Blue also leads the Vikings and the league with a .593 field goal percentage (64-108).

WRESTLING Cleveland State will conclude its competi-tion at the Southern Scuffle on Monday (Jan. 2) before returning to dual action at Chattanooga on Sunday (Jan. 8) at 2:00 p.m. Nick Flannery won three of his four matches on day one (Jan. 1) of the Southern Scuffle to advance to the round of 12. He dropped his first match, but rattled off three straight victories to advance to Monday. Flannery earned his eighth pin of the season in 4:10 against The Citadel’s Aaron Hansen to earn his first victory before win-ning two more matches. Ben Willeford, Koort Leyrer and Garry Yar-borogh also picked up wins on Sunday.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CSU returns to action when the Vikings compete in the Holiday Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 8) in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as part of their spring training trip. The Vikings have been out of action since winning 11 of 13 events to close out team compe-tition for the first semester on a high note, sweep-ing the Cleveland Dual Meet Invitational on Nov. 29. Kacey Cummings won both the 1-meter (276.65) and 3-meter (284.50) diving events with new season-high scores that qualified her for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships for the sec-ond consecutive year.

MEN’S BASKETBALL Cleveland State continues its three game homestand when the Vikings host UIC at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 5) and Loyola at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 7) in the Horizon League Game of the Week. The Vikings enter the week at 12-3 overall and 2-1 in league play after a 73-67 setback at home to Youngstown State on Saturday (Dec. 31). Jeremy Montgomery scored 21 points and D’Aundray Brown had 20 in the loss. Montgom-ery tied his career-high with six three-pointers, going 6-of-8 from three-point. CSU his 10-of-21 from three-point as a team.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CSU returns to action when the Vikings compete in the Holiday Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 8) in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as part of their spring training trip. Two individual race wins from Nathan Grant and Graham Thoresen as well as a sweep of the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events from Josh Gonzalez helped the Vikings sweep the Cleveland Dual Meet Invitational on Nov. 29 with wins over John Carroll, Canisius and Notre Dame (OH). It was CSU’s last competition before the break. Gonzalez’s 342.88 on the 3-meter board was a new career-high and was the top score by any Horizon League performer all season.

Flannery opened the Southern Scuffle by winning three of his four matches on Sunday (Jan. 1) to advance to the sec-ond day with a chance to place. Flan-nery dropped his first match on a 10-6 count to Navy’s Adam Kalil, but rattled off three straight victories to advance to Monday. Flannery earned his eighth pin of the season in 4:10 against The Citadel’s Aaron Hansen to earn his first victory. He followed with a 12-7 deci-sion over Missouri’s Eric Wilson and then beat Nikkolas Pena of Cornell 11-8 to advance to the round of 12 and will need just one win on day two to place.
