Summary of the lesson

• In this lesson author himself shares hisexperience as a narrator when he visits abank. He admits that whenever he visited thebank he became nervous. The moment hecrossed the entrance he became a hesitatingjay and when he tried to do any transition hebecame an irresponsible idiot.

• Once he came to know that his salary had been raised to fifty dollars a month, he thought that bank is only a safe place to keep his money. So slowly he walked into the bank .

He had an idea that a person about to open an account must consult the manager. As soon as he entered into the bank he went up to the accountant whom he called wicked and devil because his very first sight rattled him. Narrator told the accountant that he wanted to meet the manager. Here narrator admits that he don’t know why he added solemnly “alone”. The accountant took the narrator to the bank manager whom he described as cool grave man. Narrator seized the money and asked him to see him alone.

• The manager felt alarmed and felt that thisperson might have some awful secret to revealso he took the narrator in a private room sothat nobody could interrupt them. Themanager thought that narrator is detective oryoung child of a rich person who wants toopen a large account .

• when the manager came to know that he justwant to deposit fifty six dollars now he calledthe accountant and told the narrator coldly tocome out.

• The narrator went up to the accountant andgave him roll of money quickly as if he is doingsome conjuring trick. The accountant gave hima slip to fill and a book to sign with his name.The narrator confirmed whether money isdeposited or not. Then the narrator thoughtto withdraw the six dollars . Someone gavehim a chequebook and told him how to fill it.The people in the bank thought that theauthor is a invalid millionaire.

• In confusion and fear instead of six thenarrator filled the cheque with the amount offifty six dollars. The accountant asked insurprise,” What! Are you drawing it all again?”

• To hide the mistake the narrator told ,”Yes, the whole thing.” The narrator also informed that he is not going to deposit the money any more.

• The clerk prepared to pay the money andasked the narrator how will he have it. Thenarrator told fifty dollars in fifties and six insixes.

• The narrator took the money and rushed outof the bank. When he came out of the bigdoor he caught the echo of a roar laughter. Atthe end of the lesson the narrator admits thatsince then he never had been to bank andsave his money in cash in his trousers pocketor in silver dollars in a sock.
