Peggy lived most of her early years in Logansport, where she was pianist for the high school chorus, and it was during her years as accompanist for this choir that she found her lifetime sweetheart sitting in the tenor section, Lowell W. Townsend. They married on December 6, 1943. Following Lowell’s time of service overseas for the U.S. Army during World War II and his subsequent years of school and seminary, the couple embarked on a life of ministry with the United Methodist Church that spanned more than four decades.

Although quiet and soft-spoken, Peggy had a personal ministry that was usually conveyed through music. She was the pianist at any event who could always play by ear, with flourish-whatever the request was…she was the missing ringer of handbells on Sunday morning when someone had to call in sick…she was the organist who lived in the parsonage across the street

and could get to church in a snowstorm, and when the District Pastor’s Quartet was asked to provide the entertainment for that next pastor-and-spouse Christmas dinner, Lowell always volunteered her -- and Peggy composed, for the quartet to perform -- a fun and creative parody unique to each audience. By far more memorable for her family and for those who observed her daily walk, however, were her love of the Scriptures, her devotion to Christ, her empathy for the suffering, and her relentless witness to “the Peace that passes all understanding.”

Peggy passed quietly on November 22, 2010, in Knoxville, Tennessee, following a short illness. She was preceded in death by Lowell 1999-and the couple’s son, Ben 1958. She is survived by son Joel Linda-Townsend of Knoxville; daughter Kate Larry-Kunk of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Larrison Grace Linsner, Whitney Linsner, David Morgan-Townsend, Bethany Townsend, Susannah Brian-Finley; Jacob Catherine-Townsend and great-granddaughter, Olivia Finley.
