February 8, 2012 Dear Friends: Virgin Islands Freshwater Associaon Annual Transfer Day Benefit Dinner Dance will take place at the Eastwood Manor in the Bronx, New York, on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 8:00 PM – 3:00 AM. This year, our honoree is Dr. Rita Dudley-Grant, a champion of public health care and nave of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our theme, “Enjoying Life to the Fullest, Tomorrow is not Promised.” Approximately twenty-one years ago, Virgin Islands Freshwater Association (VIFA), a 501(c)3 not-for-profit Association. was founded to raise funds to assist those in need. We were first established in 1989 to foster and maintain linkages between those of us in New York with our communities back home. The impetus for the creation of this Association was the disaster in the Virgin Islands caused by Hurricane Hugo in September of that same year. Since then, our Association has provided scholarship assistance, hospital donaons, services for senior cizens and needy children, as well as much needed relief in the a<ermath of Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. VIFA was formed by a dedicated group of concerned Virgin Islanders who recognized the need for the preservaon of our culture. The Associaon was created to culvate cultural connecons, interacons, and assistance to fellow Virgin Islanders; not only in mes of crises, but whenever a need arises. Throughout the existence of the Virgin Islands Freshwater Associaon, our devoted members have worked diligently to insure the ongoing success of our organizaon. Since our incepon, our accomplishments have included the adopon of Nana Baby-Children’s Home in St. Thomas and we have connued to support them in their efforts to safeguard our children first and foremost. Other significant contribuons of the Associaon include donaons to the St. Croix United Fund; the September 11

th Fund,

Oprah’s Angel Network and the Clinton Bush Hai Fund. Through our ongoing VIFA Annual Scholarship Program, selected graduang students have been recognized for their academic achievements and rewarded appropriately. Accordingly, we were especially pleased to have donated to the thirteen students that traveled from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – CharloCe Amalie High School (CAHS) and Ivanna Eudora Kean High School – to New York City to aCend the United Naons Scholar Program from January 31 – February 14, 2010. We pride ourselves on always being prepared to improve the condions of those in need, and those who may require a helping hand along life’s journey. A contribuon from you will allow us to maintain the level of mely responses we make when called upon to provide a helping hand. Sincerely, Helen George-Newton President HGN:llah Enclosures

G. Rita Dudley Grant, Ph.D., MPH

For more than three decades, Dr. G. Rita Dudley Grant ’73 has been a reless champion of public health care and the expansion of mental health services, parcularly for women and children living in the Caribbean. A nave of the Virgin Islands, Dr. Dudley Grant quickly dove into the complex field of psychology upon graduang from Simmons College. A<er compleng a graduate degree in clinical psychology from Adelphi University in 1980, she joined the staff of the Center for Mul-Cultural Training in Psychology at Boston City Hospital (now Boston Medical Center). Here, Dr. Dudley Grant quickly found her stride, leading the

program to receive its first-ever accreditaon from the American Psychological Associaon. She also chose to further her public interests by obtaining a Masters in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health awarded in 1984.

In 1987, Dr. Dudley Grant’s path led her home, at the request of then Governor of the Virgin Islands, Alexander Farrelly, to serve in his disnguished cabinet as Assistant Commissioner of Health. While overseeing half of the public health programs in the Virgin Islands and a $20 million budget, Dr. Dudley Grant iniated many innovave programs including dengue fever awareness and prevenon program with her assistant, Joyce Hendricks following Hurricane Hugo and residenal substance abuse treatment for the territory, resulng in the Village Programs which exists to this day.

While in Government, she parcipated in advocang for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services policy regarding the expansion of Medicaid services, parcularly with the Virgin Islands and the combined treatment services of health, mental health and substance abuse issues. Since leaving government in 2005, having been recognized for her contribuons by then Commissioner, Dr. Alfred O. Health, she went on to serve as the founding psychologist for Virgin Islands Behavioral Services (VIBS), created by Dr. Lenard Lexier in partnership with the Virgin Islands Department of Human Services current CEO, Roland Benjamin, MSW. Today, Dr. Dudley Grant is the Clinical Director and Risk Manager of the Virgin Islands Behavioral services, an integrated system of residenal and outpaent care for children and adolescents. She also serves as an “expert witness” delivering psycho diagnosc assessment for a wide variety of private and public organizaons.

Dr. Dudley Grant is the founding member and past president of the Associaon of Virgin Islands Psychologists; served on the naonal level of the American Psychological Associaon and has been elected to the Council of the American Psychological Associaon. She has been in the forefront of advocang for diversity and women’s issues, most recently serving on the Society for Women in Psychology. Her most esteemed achievement is having served on the Central Organizing CommiCee for the Caribbean Regional Conference of Psychology, held November 15 – 18, 2011 in Nassau, Bahamas. This highly successful conference has become the basis for a new Caribbean Regional Psychological Organizaon, the fulfillment of a professional dream for Dr. Dudley Grant.

Dr. Dudley Grant readily gives back to the next generaon of health care professionals having previously been an assistant professor of psychiatry/psychology at the Boston University School of Medicine. Currently, she oversees the training of bachelors, masters, pre and post-doctoral students at VIBS. She served on several boards including the Victory Partnership Against Drug Abuse and the Mental Health Planning Council. Currently, she is appointed by Governor de Jongh to the State Advisory Group, Social and Emoonal Wellness in children and adolescents 2009 – present and the State Advisory board Office of Juvenile Jusce and Delinquency Prevenon USVI, 2009 – present. She is also in her fourth term as a trustee of St. Croix Country Day School.

A praccing Buddhist for more than 30 years, Dr. Dudley Grant connually strives to promote world peace and individual happiness. She has lectured and published extensively in this area, including co-eding her book on Psychology and Buddhism. She has also been noted in Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care, 2004 – 2005.
