February 10, 2013 Dear Friends, It will be “A Snow White Ball” in New York on Saturday, April 6, 2013 as Virgin Islands Freshwater Association, Inc. (VIFA) and friends gather together at the Eastwood Manor in the Bronx to celebrate the 22nd Annual Transfer Day Benefit Dinner Dance from 8:00 PM – 3:00 AM. Our distinguished honorees are Ms. Georgia Francis, former Charlotte Amalie High School Band Director, a phenomenal mentor, humanitarian and supporter of higher achievement and Mr. Richard A. Schrader, Sr., army veteran, poet, author, historian, lecturer and preserver of oral history and tradition. VIFA, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit Association, was first established in 1989 to foster and maintain linkages between those of us in New York with our communities back home. The impetus for the creation of this Association was the disaster in the Virgin Islands caused by Hurricane Hugo in September of that same year. Since then, our Association has provided scholarship assistance, hospital donations, services for senior citizens and needy children, as well as much needed relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. This Association was formed by a group of concerned Virgin Islanders in New York who recognized the need to preserve our culture, cultivate cultural connections and interactions and to assist fellow Virgin Islanders, not only in times of crisis, but whenever necessary. Since the inception of the Virgin Islands Freshwater Association, Inc., our dedicated members have worked diligently to ensure the success of our Association. We have adopted Nana Baby-Children’s Home in St. Thomas, USVI and continue to support them in their efforts to embrace and protect the children. Donations have been disseminated to St. Croix’s United Way; students have been assisted financially to attend educational conferences and scholarships have been awarded to students on all three Islands. We take pride in always being ready, therefore, we never have to get ready to improve the conditions of others in need, and those who may need a shoulder to lean on through life’s travels. A contribution from you will allow us to maintain the level of timely responses we make when called upon to lend our support and put a smile on someone’s face and let them know that “yes” there are people who truly care.
