INTRODUCTION

Our history will not be decided by speeches and resolutions, but by steel and bloodOtto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck-Schonhausen

WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! is based on the concept of a high-intensity, spectacular action game, with events set on various World War One frontlines. The project developed at L’Art studios involves taking part in many differentiated military missions in distant parts of the world, as a soldier of an elite French Foreign Legion unit, trained especially for the toughest assignments.

The designers of the game – L’Art studios – intend on emphasizing the following features in WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY!:

- Spectacular appearance. The game is an action-oriented and Hollywood-styled FPP shooter. Simplifying matters somewhat, the WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! project could be called an equivalent of CALL OF DUTY and MEDAL OF HONOR in the reality of World War One.

- Compelling campaign. The Single Player Campaign consists of 20 missions set in esthetically diversified World War One frontlines (North Africa, Middle East, Europe). Estimated playing time is app. 15 hours.

- Mission diversity. A significant effort is made towards making the assignments as diversified as possible, both from the gameplay and mission design perspective. WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! involves not only participating in major battles, but also patrolling areas, defending and attacking targets, moving on foot or being transported by vehicles, fighting on land, in the air (operating on-board weapons) and on water (as a member of a ship crew), traveling great distances, as well as the opportunity to see what it means to fight in the trenches.

- Historical accordance. The content of WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! is in compliance with the historical truth. The player gets to participate in genuine historical events and has access to weapons and military equipment designed with reference to professional images and documents. Having said this, the developer always kept in mind the main goal of the project, which was to create a compelling action game and guaranteeing excellent fun.

- Genuine weapons and military equipment. WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! involves the use of authentic weapons and vehicles – with all their faults (all sorts of malfunctions) and advantages (amazing fire power, uninhibited imagination of the designer). Moreover, compliance with historical facts is also achieved in the appearance of characters (soldiers’ uniforms, insignia, etc.), the environment (levels are created with the use of images, maps, memories of veterans, etc.) Even the experimental equipment presented in the game – such as the Russian Tsar Tank, for instance – is no exception here.

- User-friendly Architecture. A component-based structure of the world of WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! allows for a relatively easy preparation of all sorts of bonuses,

add-ons and user-made mods, which simply need to be developed in the form of an additional Single Player campaign.

WHY WORLD WAR ONE?

There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hellWiliam Tecumseh Sherman

The FPP Shooter sector is currently dominated by three genres: war games (Activision, Electronic Arts, but also Codemasters / Bohemia Interactive), sci-fi (Id Software, Activision or Digital Extremes) and horrors (led by Sierra Entertainment and Sega with their flagship „frighteners”). Since these themes are in the scope of interest of the major companies in the industry, it is obvious that they are worth devoting some effort, to say the least. We have also been observing lately the growing interest of interactive entertainment designers with the subject of mercenary armies – games dealing with the adventures of “dogs of war” are being currently developed both for European publishers (vide: the Austrian company JoWood) and the absolute global leaders (vide: the new line of games from the BATTLEFIELD series by Electronic Arts).

Following this line of thought, L’Art has come up with an idea which seems to have slipped the minds of electronic entertainment “aces” – World War One coupled with the volunteers of the French Foreign Legion. To start with, we wish to reject all sorts of prejudiced opinions claiming that military equipment used in 1914-18 will not be attractive for video game users (as the „Weapons” section shows, the so-called Great War unexpectedly involved everything you might wish for), and that the „static” character of battles waged at this time excludes effective combat action. History delivers a great number of thrilling, action-packed scenarios, with a genuinely “Hollywood” pace. More information on this can be found in the „Event Development” section.

Additionally, the battlefields of World War One also served as a testing ground for numerous experimental weapons and military equipment which can rarely be seen in video games. As a result, WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! by L’Art Studios has a great chance to surprise gamers with something original. What’s more, it is worth pointing out that the sole production in the entire history of electronic entertainment which ever dealt with anything related to World War One, was IRON STORM. In the case of that title, however, the designers preferred to create their own, “alternative” reality, instead of recreating true, historic facts, which are the basis of games inspired by WWII – for example the MEDAL OF HONOR and CALL OF DUTY series – or L’Art’s proposition, for that matter.

WHY THE FOREIGN LEGION?

Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons

General MacArthur

Despite the fact that the French Foreign Legion has undoubtedly always been the subject of many controversies, anyone interested in the history of warfare will agree that there are few other military units which could match it in terms of combat training or professional operating techniques. Soldiers of the “Légion Étrangère” are generally identified with the effectiveness and deadly precision of their actions, and the formation itself has often appeared in books and movies, bringing about romantic associations. The Legionnaires are presented as people who, having lived in depravation for many years, decided to expiate for their crimes with service on the toughest frontlines.

Wikipedia.org describes the French Foreign Legion in the following words: The French Foreign Legion (Légion Étrangère) is a unique unit within the French Army established in 1831. It was created as a unit for foreign volunteers, because foreigners were forbidden to enlist in the French Army after the July Revolution in 1830.

It was primarily used to protect and expand the French colonial empire during the 19th century, but has also taken part in all of its wars against other European powers such as the Franco-Prussian War and both World Wars.

Despite being thought of as outdated and an anachronism, the legion has remained an important part of the French Army. It has survived three republics, one empire, two World Wars, the rise and fall of mass conscript armies, the painful dismantlement of the French colonial empire and finally, the loss of its fatherland — Algeria.

The reason for its survival may be as John Elting says: "The French, being a thrifty and practical people, have always been eager to let any available foreigners assist them in any necessary bleeding and dying for la Patrie."

In this context, L’Art is convinced that – especially considering the unceasing popularity of games with experienced, “seen-it-all” heroes, such as Marcus Phoenix from GEARS OF WAR for Xbox360 – protagonists deriving from the Foreign Legion would fit perfectly into the current mainstream trends.

Another argument in favor of introducing the Foreign Legion into WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY!, is the fact that – being an elite unit – it always had access to the latest, state-of-the-art technical solutions and could even test experimental weapons. As a result, the developer can arm the player with all sorts of gadgets the average participant of the Great War could only dream about.

Bearing in mind the controversies surrounding the French Foreign Legion troops – who are often believed to be undependable mercenaries – the developer intends to emphasize the undeniably admirable and exemplary features of the formation ( such as professional approach, courage). The authors of the project also wish to present the audience with some facts related to the Legion of which the general awareness is scarce, such as the long and exhausting training program of “rookie” legionnaires on a remote Farm. L’Art studios also plans to include the specific code of honor, according to which the soldiers of the Foreign Legion live and fight, into the reality of WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY!.

French Foreign Legion Code of Honor:

1. Legionnaire, you are a volunteer serving France with honor and fidelity.

2. Every legionnaire is your brother-in-arms regardless of his nationality, race, or religion. You will demonstrate this by the strict solidarity which must always unite members of the same family.

3. Respectful of traditions, devoted to your leaders, discipline and comradeship are your strengths, courage and loyalty your virtues.

4. Proud of your status as legionnaire, you display this in your uniform which is always impeccable, your behavior always dignified but modest, your living quarters always clean.

5. An elite soldier, you will train rigorously, you will maintain your weapon as your most precious possession, you are constantly concerned with your physical form.

6. A mission is sacred, you will carry it out until the end, at all costs. Updated Version: A mission is sacred, you will carry it out until the end respecting laws, customs of war, international conventions and, if necessary, at the risk of your life. 7. In combat, you will act without passion and without hate, you will respect the vanquished enemy, you will never abandon your dead or wounded, nor surrender your arms.

HIGH INTENSITY OF THE GAMEPLAY EXPERIENCE

In war there are three courses of action open to the enemy, and he usually chooses the fourthGeneral Helmuth von Moltke

As we have stated at the beginning – WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! is intended as a spectacular, intensive action game, giving its user the opportunity to visit various frontlines of World War One. The developer wants to achieve this goal – as well as a speedy pace of events – with the use of the following means:

- The missions are carefully staged and full of sequences triggered by the user, with assignment objectives always marked clearly (which does not mean too obviously). Moreover – by referring to historical materials, the designer tried to select the most compelling moments of the whole conflict, ensuring that the need to remain true to facts does not push the main concept – creating an excellent action game - out of sight.

- The player often operates within a larger allied unit, which means there really is a lot going on around him. The accompanying soldiers of different nationalities and armies react with eloquent comments, responding dynamically to unfolding events. NPCs cooperate with each other, treating the player as a trustworthy companion as they spontaneously offer help during missions, ensure support in combat, and sometimes even ask for help themselves.

- The opponents’ AI is aggressive, with the enemy units given additional instructions allowing them to cooperate with each other during combat. A clear division is visible in the opposing armies, due to which the officers (when present at the battlefield) motivate lower-ranked soldiers to resist the player with more verve. The behavior of all the characters present on the battlefield has been designed according to historic materials (e.g. books on tactics used at the beginning of the 20th century), and the same applies for the organization of the German army, which the player has to face.

- WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! features many various types of arms and almost each mission introduces a new weapon (which makes a tangible difference) More information on this can be found in the “Weapons” section.

- The military equipment and combat vehicles featured in WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! are designed in an attractive way and using them is great fun. The individual vehicles can not only be driven and defended with the use of various on-board weapons, but can also be partners on the battlefield (e.g. when taking advantage of the support from an allied tank in the face of enemy fire).

- The diversity we have been talking about applies not only to the type of missions, but also to the pace of the game. Similarly to FEAR: FIRST ENCOUNTER ASSAULT RECON, where brutal shoot-out sequences were intertwined with fragments in the genre of a horror movie, in WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! the developer plans to couple attack sequences with defense assignments, heroic victories with shameful retreats, or major battles with nocturnal patrols on enemy territory (see the “Event development” section). Diversity of offered sensations has been the key to the success of many productions in the past.

THE ROLE OF THE PLAYER

We're Klingons. We don't embrace other cultures, we conquer themMartok

In WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY!, the user puts on the shoes of different soldiers of an elite unit of the French Foreign Legion during World War One. As a result, he gets to fight in various roles (e.g. participant in a major assault, scout, on-deck gun operator, sailor) and in various parts of the world (from North Africa, to central Italy, to the south of France).

According to the storyline of the project – thanks to France’s secret agreements with other countries of the Entente, a group of experienced and exceptionally well trained for operating in the toughest conditions commandos from a special unit of the Foreign Legion are sent into action whenever conventional means fail. Although the WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! project overestimates somewhat the role of the French Foreign Legion troops in the victory of the Entente, it needs to be said, that the main rule behind designing the Legionnaires’ assignments was that of moderation and the “golden mean”.

By introducing the player of WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! to an elite unit of the Foreign Legion, the developer not only pays tribute to a distinguished, heroic military formation, but also comes up with a convincing justification of the fact that during the estimated 15 hours of gameplay, the user gets to visit a dozen or so geographic regions.

The elite unit of the French Foreign Legion, into which the player of WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! gets enlisted, is a fictitious formation, the developer has however made sure that its existence seems possible and probable. This is argumented by the fact that the special assignment unit has been created from the best of the best soldiers serving in existing, historical regiments of the „Légion Étrangère”, which actually fought in the Great War. These are:

- 1st Foreign Regiment (1e RE)

- 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG)

- 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment (1e REC)- 3rd Combat Squadron of 1e REC- 2nd Combat Squadron of 1e REC- Reconnaissance and Light Squadron (EEI) of 1e REC

- 1st Foreign Parachute Battalion

Page 12:  · Web viewThere is no need to dwell on the technical details at this point – let us just state that the developer wants to reach a similar compromise between “adoptability”

A) ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

The player is an active participant of the events presented in WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! and – following the example of such productions as the already mentioned CALL OF DUTY or MEDAL OF HONOR – has the impression of being part of “a bigger scheme”.

An analogy to these titles can also be noticed in the general concept behind controlling the behavior of the player’s avatar. There is no need to dwell on the technical details at this point – let us just state that the developer wants to reach a similar compromise between “adoptability” and a system with genuine tactical possibilities.

B) STORYLINE

Although the developer has no ambition to come up with an intricate screenplay suitable for an adventure or role-playing game, the general belief at L’Art is that an intriguing story plays a most significant role in putting the game events in an appropriate context. This is the path which has been chosen by the authors of WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! in creating the game’s storyline. The individual pieces of the game will be joined together by a narrative, which, generally speaking, will tell the tale of a fictitious, elite and top secret unit of excellently trained commandos from the French Foreign Legion, who played a major part in ensuring the Entente’s victory. As a result, WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! instead of a traditional, single protagonist features a charismatic group of heroes – a unit of excellently qualified soldiers, who could be best compared to the protagonists of the COMMANDOS series. According to the developer’s plans, the story is followed from the different perspectives of individual unit members, and on various frontlines of the Great War.

Due to the fact that developing complex and convincing feature scenes (both CGI and sequences based on the game code) is time consuming and requires a great deal of resources, the developer intends to present the story and event development in the world of WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! by the use of the following means:

- Short dialogs with major NPCs during assignments (played during missions).

- Images resembling early 20th century painting and photography accompanied by voice-over commentary (played in between missions).

- Historic and/or documentary footage obtained on the basis of an agreement with a thematic television channel, such as Discovery or Planete (played in between campaigns).

C) THE MAIN PROTAGONIST AND OTHER CHARACTERS

The developer does not intend on focusing on a single protagonist, and instead wants to present a collective of individuals – in the shape of a special unit of the French Foreign Legion – around which all the events of WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! will evolve. The main idea is that, due to a large diversification of assignments, during the various missions the player becomes different Legionnaires from an elite unit of the Foreign Legion, depending on the nature of the challenge.

12 1

Page 13:  · Web viewThere is no need to dwell on the technical details at this point – let us just state that the developer wants to reach a similar compromise between “adoptability”

However, because the abovementioned elite unit of the Foreign Legion is the binding agent of all the game elements, it needs to be emphasized that although WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! has many different protagonists, they are all soldiers from the same unit.

As for the appearance of the key Foreign Legion commandos in WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! (the game protagonists and major NPC companions), as well as Entente army soldiers (significant NPC companions), the developer wants to make use of images of well known personalities from the world of history, art, warfare and popular culture. The most important goal however is to create a gallery of characters consisting of tough and worldly-wise soldiers.

Naturally, the specific style of the era (characteristic hairstyles or unmistaken beard/mustache trends) is a significant element of character visualization.

B) PLANNED GAMEFLOW AND THE WALKTHROUGH OF THE FIRST MISSION

Below you will find planned WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! Gamflow, which has been designed taking into account most spectacular and dramatic moments of World War I. While the given outline is – surely – well-thought-out, it should be considered as a starting point for the discussion. Developer is opened to all suggestions and ideas.

It is worth mentioning, that during the work over the game, developer wanted to make use of both approaches: lead the player by hand and have a mandatory “earthquake” at the beginning. That’s why practice mode at “The Farm” is not mandatory and prologue mission (“Battle for Hill 70”) illustrates one of the most bloody battles of World War I.

Planned WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! gameflow:

- Practice – not mandatory1. „The Farm” (September 1910)

- Prologue1. Battle at Hill 70 (27 August 1917)

- First Campaign1. British capture Baghdad (11 March 1914)2. French and British joined forces assault at German protectorate Togo (8 August 1914)3. Australian army landing on Neu Pommen island (11 September 1914)4. Sunking British cruisers by U9 (22 September 1914)5. First Suesian Offense: Shock and Awe (28 January 1915)6. Battle at Haelen (12 August 1915)4. French and British forces evacuate from Gallipoli (6 January 1916)5. Verdun Hell #1: German assault on Hill 304 (6 March 1916)6. Verdun Hell #2: Defending fort Vaux (7 June 1916)

- Third Campaign1. Battle at Somma: Fights for Ancre hills (October 1916)2. 11th battle at Isonzo (19 August - 12 September 1917)3. British-French intervention at Italian frontline (November 1917)4. Battle at Cambrai (20 November - 6 December 1917)

WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! example mission:

„Gallipoli Retreat (8-9 January 1916)”

Campaign: Second campaignMission: French and British forces evacuate from Gallipoli (6 January 1916)

Historical background: Evacuation of the 14 divisions, located closely to the enemy, was a dangerous task and it was expected to bring many losses. However, heavy storm, which blew off, prved, that allied forces positions were impossible to hold. After the storm, at the beginning of January, the tunderstorm and the blizzard in Suvla flooded the trenches, drowning many soldiers, and moving dead bodies towards British lines. Some more soldiers died because of the low temperatures and snowing.

As an irony, the evacuation – held almost without losses, was one of the greatest Ententa victories in the whole campaign. Beachheads Suvla and Anzac were evacuated at the end of December and other soldiers have left the beaches just before 20 of December. Troops were withdrawn from 7 December, but steps were taken to hide this fact from the Turkish. For example machine guns were set in Anzac and their triggers were connected to the pan with a wire. Such gun – after a water felt on the pan – shot from time to time, making the Turks believe, that the frontline is still being defended by the real people.

Helles beachhead was held a little longer, just in case the British change their minds and decide to attack again. Decision to evacuate troops from there was made on 27 December. Turkish army was already warned that this might happen and decided to attack on 6 January 1916, but they were held back. Last British soldiers left the beach Gallipoli on 9 January 1916,

Mission flow: This WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! mission focuses on the historic battle, in which the British have defended from the Turkish army on 6 January 1916.

Mission begins with a sequence druing which Player leaves British trenches and – together with his squadron – prepares to march on board of the evacuation ship. Following the path set by the developer, Player is moved to the place from which he can watch the whole evacuation – he can see the troops, columns of cars, navy ships anchored at the shore and planes flying above. Player can hear the sounds of war and the frontline – gunshots and artillery blows.

This historical Turkish attack takes place during the registry procedure, just before Player’s troop marches out. Soldiers are ordered to return to their fortifications and return fire to the enemies.

CHECKPOINT.

15 1

Page 16:  · Web viewThere is no need to dwell on the technical details at this point – let us just state that the developer wants to reach a similar compromise between “adoptability”

Player is incorporated into defenders troops and takes his position in the trenches. Being under heave artillery fire, he has to shoot the Turkish, who desperately attack from all directions. After beating a certain number of opponents, Player is notified, that the operator of the stationary machine gun has been killed and the Player has to take his position.

CHECKPOINT

Player has to reach Northern part of the trenches and take the unattended stationary machine gun. In Southern part of the trenches, Player has to fight against opponents emerging out of virtually nowhere – in this sequence melee fighting plays quite a important role (it is based on the some mini-game module). At the end, Player reaches stationary cannon and the reinforcements arrive.

CHECKPOINT.

Battle sequence – a stationary machine gun is used to the counter-attacking comrades.

CHECKPOINT.

While the player operates the machine gun, radioman receives the SOS calling from the nearby field airport, which is being under enemy fire. The Player – accompanied by two other commandos from French Foreign Legion – goes to rescue the airmen.

CHECKPOINT.

Elitary commandos from the French Foreign Legion, knowing the surrounding grounds well, lead the Player through the open desert to the airport, which is under fire. Heroes attack Turkich from the back, what makes it easier to beat them, even despite being heavily outnumbered.

16 1

Page 17:  · Web viewThere is no need to dwell on the technical details at this point – let us just state that the developer wants to reach a similar compromise between “adoptability”

CHECKPOINT.

French Foreign Legion commandos are taking care of the airport and waiting for reinforcements and the Player takes perfect shooting position on the nearest allied-forces fighter.

CHECKPOINT.

Fighter pilot flights by – very low! – several times, while Player’s task is to shoot the opponents with the on-board cannon. If the Player shoots well, opponents will withdraw soon. Finally, Turkish defense collapses, and the British show their happiness shouting.

CHECKPOINT & MISSION END.

C) THE GREAT WAR WEAPONS IN THE GAME

The list below doesn’t include all the weapons used in World War One, but only those, which are planned by L’Art to be included in the game WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY!.

The developer focused on preparing a set, which will be interesting for FPP Shooters fans – this is where the division into “melee”, “pistols / revolvers” and “rifles” comes from.

D) WORLD WAR ONE VECHICLES IN THE GREAT WAR

Below you will find a list of the battle vehicles L’Art wants to present in WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! – of course in World War One other vehicles and equipment were used.

The last category is the most important – it includes the experimental vehicles and battle vehicles prototypes. Most of them were never used on the battlefield, but WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! Gives the chance to change this status quo. L’Art wants to give player the chance to use various battle vehicles in various weather conditions on various, dramatically different frontlines. This fact, connected with the “legendary” failures of the war equipment during World War One, can result in many surprising experiences while playing the game.

Moreover, it is worth mentioning, developer wants to take care of the details of vehicles in WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! Usage of various on-deck weapons and the possibility to drive all these vehicles is being considered. Of course, the developer doesn’t consider giving full freedom to drive all the vehicles and plans to limit it from logical and storyline driven point of view.

THE TECHNOLOGY

Developer has spent over one year to prepare editors and tools – which are very effective and giving great opportunities. Thanks to this the most difficult and unpleasant part of the project is already completed. The only things to complete are: designing the project details, creating game content and… putting WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! together into one, elegant, fully working piece of art.

A) MIDDLE-WARE SOLUTIONS

WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! is being developed using latest software and renowned middleware solutions, including:

- Engine based on GAMEBRYO by EMERGENT GAME TECHNOLOGIES

- Physics created with AGEIA PHYSX technology by AGEIA

- Trees created with SPEEDTREE by INTERACTIVE DATA VISUALIZATION

- Positional Audio created with THE MILES SOUND SYSTEM by RAD GAME TOOLS

B) MULTIPLAYER

WORLD WAR ONE: ENLIST TODAY! project is aimed at creating very interesting single player campaign. Therefore a multiplayer campaign is not planned.
