HUGE CROWDS GATHER AT BEESTON FOR SAXELBY DISPERSALTOPPING AT 3000 GNS TWICE!

The dispersal of the noted Saxelby herd of Pedigree Holsteins took place at Beeston Castle Auction on Tuesday 6th March, the property of the family partnership of S & R & J Stafford who are long established in the world of black and whites, and renowned for superior type, production and very sound co families.

The catalogue was undoubtedly one of the best to be produced for a pedigree herd dispersal this year and the all round features of high yield and classification, good sires and cows families and tremendous production certainly brought the crowds in – the car park was jammed and the ring was heaving. Potential buyers had travelled from Scotland to Devon, Ireland, throughout Wales and from the Midlands and beyond with over 60 different buyers recorded and some 23 bids of 2000 gns of more.

Naturally enough it was the best animals from the best cow families that attracted the top bids. 3000 gns was achieved on two occasions, firstly for Saxelby Smurf Rosabel – a sensational daughter of Chartroise Smurf who had calved in September, carrying a pregnancy to Impression and is the 13 th

generation of cows scored in the top two grades. She was purchased by JG & CA Bayley, Warwickshire. Secondly at 3000 gns was a tremendous third calf cow, Saxelby Brady Amber (Ex91-4yr & SP), a daughter of Atwood Brady, sold fresh in December and giving 40 kg daily, she was purchased by Robert Butterfield for their noted Ingleview Herd at Linghaw Farm, Lancaster.

Mother and daughter combination from the Sallie family followed next in the price list. Saxelby Dude Sallie was a 91 point 4 year old, who was fresh with her third calf. Backed by 12 generations of cows scored VG or EX and was giving a daily yield of over 50 kg, selling for 2800 gns and travelling to Lee Bro’s, Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Her daughter, a milking heifer, Saxelby Extreme Sallie (VG85-2yr) who showed all the great attributes of her mother, selling for the same price of 2800 gns, again to Ingleview Holsteins. 2800 gns was also paid for Saxelby Smurf Sallie (Ex90-4yr & SP), she calved in October and was still giving 40 kg and had been recently PD+ to Expander. She was purchased by Lee Bro’s, Northern Ireland. The Patricia family, one which certainly helped put Saxelby on the map, saw 55 members pass through the ring, topping at 2700 gns for a (VG85-2yr), Saxelby Butler Patricia. This fresh second calved cow was a daughter of Brady giving 42 kg daily and was purchased by Midlands buyer B K Adkin & Son, Leicestershire.

Calves were a great trade from start to finish, topping at 1650 gns for Saxelby Upright Sallie, a 10 month old daughter of Morningview Upright out of a (VG85) Ralma Confirm, going to D N James & Co, Ceredigion. Doorman calves were keenly sought, topping at 1350 gns for Saxelby Doorman Amber, this three month old heifer, was out of the recently mentioned Brady Amber, and was purchased by A C Birkle, Dunge Hill Farm, Loughborough. Another member of the Sallie family then sold for 1300 gns, Euclid Sallie had a PLI score of £380, sold at 5 months old and travelling to Northern Ireland to A Mawhinney. A further 6 heifer calves were sold over 900 gns.

In-calf and served heifers, sold very well with plenty of competitive bidding. Topping at 2250 gns for Saxelby Contrast Patrica by Larcrest Contrast with 6 generations of VG/EX dams behind her, sold in-calf

to Unix and being purchased by P J Waring, Beverley. 1800 gns was paid by Andrew McCauley, Northern Ireland for a daughter of Justice from the Rose family, calving in June to Unix. Another June calving Patricia by Constable sold for 1750 gns, again going to Ireland for Ian & Nigel Martin, Co Monaghan. Maiden heifers ended the sale, with trade just as firm as the heifer calves before them. Topping at 1180 gns for a 12 month old daughter of Fever, being purchased by Robert Butterfield, with a further 10 maidens selling for more than 900 gns.TOP PRICES: GNSLot 41 Saxelby Smurf Rosabel (Ex91-4yr & SP) JG & CA Bayley, Warwickshire 3000Lot 52 Saxelby Brady Amber (Ex91-4yr & SP) R & E Butterfield, Lancaster 3000Lot 109 Saxelby Extreme Salle (VG85-2yr) R & E Butterfield, Lancaster 2800Lot 42 Saxelby Smurf Salle (Ex90-4yr & SP) Lee Bro’s, N. Perhaps not the added numbers as expected, due to the weather difficulties from the week before. Nevertheless an absolutely blistering trade within the cull cow ring once again at Beeston. Plainer end still remain incredibly buoyant, with nothing in the shed selling for less than 82 pence, that includes plenty of very hard worked dairy cattle and Channel Island breeds. 25 BUTCHERS CATTLEAuctioneer: Jonathan Farrall 07796 952948

A respectable entry of cattle after last weeks’ wintery spell! Sadly one or two sellers tied up as a result of the draconian and frankly, unnecessary 6 day rule.

It was particularly nice to see one or two of those well finished, butchers type cattle amongst the ranks today. John Gate selling to 236p/kg and David Wilcock to 234p/kg, dairy bred Charolais x from Barry Williams selling to 200p/kg and an improved trade for Angus with “gentleman John” selling steers to 195p/kg and Geraint Evans not far behind with heifers to 194p/kg. Top headage went to Angus x steers at £1346 with the heifers topping at £1287 for a Lim from Messrs Wilcock.

The bull trade was brisk enough once again, best sorts selling to 227p/kg from Beeston regular, John Gate. Further bulls to 214p/kg from the same good home, Angus x to 179p/kg for David Bromilow and, Black & Whites to 169p/kg for Carol Addison.

Great to see new, and returning customers at Beeston, you can always be assured of a friendly welcome and a “try hard” attitude to selling your stock..... Don’t hesitate to get in touch to see how we might help, just give me a call 07796 952948.

388 REARING CALVES (Not for export) FRIDAYAuctioneer: Jonty Cliffe 07595 453306

Following the week of the Beast of the East, Beeston has certainly been the Beast of the North West! Calves have been a superb trade, one buyer was quoted saying ‘your calves have been £30-£50 dearer than anywhere else this week’. A few extra numbers about after last weeks ‘snow hit’ entry. I hope those vendors agree with me that those calves have benefitted from an extra week’s milk! A super show of quality and numbers in the dairy bulls. For any buyer thinking the dairy bulls consisted of a lot of spring cross breds… you would be wrong, only a handful! 140 in the Continentals section, terrific number forward!

64 Continental Bulls29 Blue bulls averaged £314 and 28 Simmental bulls averaged £298, need I say more? Top of the shop today was Clotton Hall Farm with Blues at £395, £392 and £385, who brought a superb batch of 14 Blues. PB&D Hockenhull also at £385. Simmentals to £390 for T Bell & Partners, £385 for W Hodgson & Sons and £380 for A&C Drinkall. Charolais to £322 for G Thomasson & Son and Limousin’s to £298 for TC BM & AT Williams. Best £350+, second quality £300-£340. Mediums £240-£290, young bulls £200+.

76 Continental Heifers The show was stolen by SAA&B Carden’s Blue’s which made £360, £300 and £285, a splendid show! Next was a Charolais at £255 for William D Jones. Simmentals to £250 for GE Oakley & Son and £242 for D Parry. Limousin’s traded to £250 for RI&AML Sidebottom and £235 for F&B Griffiths. Best Blues £280+ other breeds £240+. Mediums in high demand, nothing under £200, most £200-£240. Young heifers £140+.

48 Native Bulls A strong show of bulls, topping at £335 for D Parry’s Hereford, next up £295 for GET&PG Wright. A gap to the second quality at £200-£230, a good buy on the day. Angus to £255 for LE Weston & Sons, £250 for J Ravenscroft & Partners and £248 for KM Newton. Younger bulls £150-£180. Only few smalls £100+

41 Native Heifers A flying trade from start to finish for all shapes and sizes… the smallest probably the dearest! SAA&B Carden were at it again with Hereford’s to £225, TWICE. Next £196 for DC Nurse. Angus to £210 for DA Higginson, £180 for G Thomasson & Son, £165 for JR&FJ Hocknell. Mediums £130-£160. The smaller heifers £100-£130 all day long!!!

Top price today was £188 for G&RJ Perry, £160 for DA Higginson, £150 for CB Davies & Partners, £135 and £130 for W Hodgson & Sons, £130 for RJB Farming. Best were £120+, strong rearers £80-£110. 199 STORE CATTLEAuctioneer: Jonathan Farrall 07796 952948

JUST ONE MORE..... THAT’S ALL WE NEEDED!!!

A fantastic entry of cattle, just short of the magical 200 mark and proof beyond doubt of the value of a thriving weekly market with a ring full of buyers and someone for everything.

Trade remains strong in the main, one or two of the smaller cattle looked decent value, perhaps a casualty of the straw prices and the feeling that spring still feels a way off! Forward cattle were a pleasure to sell, all credit to the Beeston sellers for some super quality.

Top call went to Mr Lloyd with a tremendous steer at £1270 (16mo), Mr P Jones very close at £1220 and a good percentage of cattle over £1100 and the vast majority of steers over £1000. Trade for heifers was every bit as good! Mike Siddorn always pulls something out of the top drawer, and today was no exception. Top two heifers at £1190 and £1185, John Goodwin came very close at £1180 and there was no shortage of heifers over £1000.

Particularly of note today were the better end of the younger cattle, Messrs Darlington selling some super cattle which peaked at £1070 for 10mo steers, recording a top price of 258p/kg.

Thank you all for your continued support and if you have stores to sell, bring them where the buyers are; EVERY WEEK AT BEESTON, 23 recorded purchasers once again, many more unable to get started!

Don’t hesitate to call Jonathan for any advice on marketing store/beef cattle or better still try some next week.

Basic Payment Scheme 2018It’s the time of year again in which BPS claims need to be completed, please find below a summary of this year’s updates :-The RPA have undertaken proactive land change detection (PLCD) mapping updates which can lead to incorrect land data. Therefore it is extremely important to check your online maps and query and incorrect updates, these can include land cover changed, temporary electric fences mapped as permanent boundaries etcIs your land currently, or sometime doing the year going to be affected by transport or utility works? If such works last for over 28 days you must withdraw the land from your BPS application to prevent a penalty, compensation for the loss of BPS payment can be claimed for.Transferring land to a new owner or tenant can be completed online, if an error occurs during this process you must complete a paper RLE1 form to transfer/remove the affected parcel. We have now began the process of transferring entitlements, we expect further entitlements to come onto the market in the coming weeks therefore ensure that you have the current number of entitlements to match the eligible hectares in which you are claiming on. If they are not used, you will lose them! New greening rules, with key changes including ‘trees in a line’ under the EFA hedges option, the inclusion of field margins under the EFA buffer strip option and EFA fallow cover now converts to permanent grassland and the management rules have now changed. We are now taking instructions to undertake BPS claims for 2018, do not hesitate to contact Andrew, Jonty or Stephen if you would like to book an appointment or require further information.
