HOW IT WORKS:

Each of you has a different topic to focus on throughout the entire novel. Each time you see that questions are due, you are responsible for answering

the questions listed in this packet that are specific to your focus only. You will earn up to 10 points each day that questions are due:

o 5 points for completing the packet questions.o 5 points for explaining and teaching your information to the rest of

the class during discussion that day. Use the My Focus page to answer your questions; use the Notes page to jot

down information you learn from your peers about their topics. Overall, packet will be worth 25% of your final grade this semester! If you are absent, you will be responsible for any missing work on the day

22

Chapters 24-27 Social Structure and Social Interaction

1. Katniss is preoccupied with the cameras and audience throughout this book. Find several examples of this in chapters 24-27, and then discuss how realistic this is in real life. How often do we consider who’s watching us before behaving in a certain way?

Deviance and Social Control1. Katniss and Peeta commit a huge act of deviance against the Capitol at

the end of Games, though Katniss doesn’t originally realize it. Why is this act perceived as so deviant? Do you think the government is overreacting, or are they right to view this act as a threat?

Social Stratification1. Katniss feels a connection between herself and Thresh in these chapters,

and between herself and others from District 11 throughout the book. How does social class affect whether or not Katniss chooses to befriend a person? Do you feel this is realistic in real life? Do we, too, choose our alliances based on a common social stratification?

Sex and gender1. Cinna’s job is to present Katniss in the most positive light, and he focuses

on clothing. How does Cinna dress Katniss after the Games? Why? What feminine characteristics does he believe different types of clothing enhance throughout the novel?

Race and Ethnicity1. Katniss’s final act of friendship with Rue is continually brought up at the

end of the novel. Why is friendship between races a taboo in this book? Why would the government attempt to enforce this hatred between races? What do they gain?

Politics1. Why does the government react so strongly against Katniss and Peeta’s

finale at the end of Games? Why can’t they allow two winners or no winners? How might this affect their power? Do you think the government is overreacting, or are they right to view this act as a threat?
