AGRICULTURE

Little over 10% of the total land area is cultivated in Himachal.

86.4% small and marginal famers who have less than 2 hectare of land. Out of which

68.3% have below 1 hectare and 18.9% have 1-2 hectare land holding.

Cultivation is carried out right from 240 to 4250 m.

Agriculture Department: HQ Shimla.

It was merged with forest Department in 1950.

Thereafter agriculture department statred functioning independently. At that

time horticulture was also part of this department.

It is most important food crop of the state.

Himachal Pradesh ranks 5th in production of maize after U.P., Bihar ,Punjab and

and BL 78.

Wheat

HYV are RR-21 ,Kalyan Sona, Sonalika, HPW 155, HPW 251,Omkareshwear(for

Potato:

Commercial cultivation on modern scientific lines was initiated in 1977 in Solan.

introduction of Dutch technology in Mushroom production which became

operational in 1992.

Solan has been declared mushroom district of the state.

Mushroom is devoid of suger and starch.

extracted on the commerical basis.

So far 75%of the salt requirment of the country is met form Gujarat follwed by

12% supply from Rajasthan.

Slate (Derived from shale):It is found in Mandi, Chamba, Kangra and Sirmaur.The

largest mineral of the state on the basis of the values is slate.

Uranium

Found for the first time in 1789 by Martin Hein rich klaproth who named it after

the Uranus.

Its radioa tivd properties wede discovered in 1896 by Henri Becquerel.

Found in Hamirpur and in massive quantity near Chhinijara and Jari (Banjar) in

Parbati valley and near Dhela in Garsah vally in kullu district.

No tax transit duty was levied on the goods exported to or imported from Tibet according

to a treaty between Kehri singh Raja of Bushahr and Grajayadoke, the king of Tibet.

The commander of Tibet army at the time of treaty was Guldenchhen in Tibeto-Ladakhi

war in 1681-83 A.D.

The bridge at kandror is highest in Asia.

Bridges overSatluj River are:Kandror , Slapper, Tattapani , Lunri, Kharo , Moorang ,

Gymthing.

The bridge on Yamuna at Paonta is the largest bridge in Himachal Pradesh.

Hindustan-Tibet road

The Pandavas chose Kinnaur to spend their last year of exile across jangi,on the old

Hindustan-Tibet road at a Hamlet named Moorang, where three water channels meet.

CAREER POINT SHIMLA The Pandavas fort which supposed to have been built by them now houses "Orming

Devta" the reigning deity of the village.

A philologist Alexander Csoma De Koros, who is acknowledge as founder of Tibetogy,

he sailed to Turkey, Cyprus and Egypt before coming to Lahore in 1820.

On his way to Leh, he met Willuam Moorcraft a British officer who presented him a

copy of "Alphabetum Tibetanum" supposedly the first book on Tibet.

In 1825 the government of India granted him a modest monthly stipend of fifty rupees

and in return he promised to produce a dictionary, grammar and short accounts of

Tibetan literature and history.

He lived at village named kanum on Satluj in upper Bushahr from 11027-1830. It was

here; the first ever Trietan-English dictionary comprising over 30,000 words was

compiled by Alexander Csoma de Koros.

Lord Dalhousie introduced Indoa to first railway,lays out first telegraph line,established

postal system and starts the public works department. He was forces by climate induced

ill heath to move to camp in Chinni (present day kalpa in kinnaur).

Soon after this he ordered the construction of Indo-Tibetan road, through a region

dubbed as the valley of shadow of death.

Rudyard kipling in his "Turn of the century" novel described this valley as "at last world-

a velly of leagues where the high hills were fashioned of a mere rubble and off the knees

of the mountains. Surely the Gods live here!There is no place for men".

After the ceding of the states of Patiala, Baghat and Keonthal, the first leap of Hindustan-

Tibet road from Kalka to Shimla commenced in 1849.

The tribal areas of H. P form 42.6% of state's total area yet amazingly contain only 4.2 of

total population.

By the end of March there were 16,997 inhabited villages in H. P out of these in

1985,7083 had been connected by roads. Till 2011,9870 villages had been covered by

roads.

On 2nd Oct 1974, Himachal Govt Transport and Mandi-Kullu road Transport

Corporation were merged to form Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC)

Kalka Shimla-Narrow Gauge(96.54 Km)

Inaugurated on Nov 9, 1903 by Loed Curzon.

Solan's wine contractor Lala Ram Narayan was the first official passenger

Railway line reached Shimla for the first in 1906.

Initially there were 107 tunnels and in 1930 they were renumbered to 103.Today

they are 102 as Tunnel no. 46 which was at Solan brewery is no longer there.

It has 869 bridges & 919 curves.

Longest tunnel on the track is the Barog (1143m long).

When the digging of Barog tunnel was going on the English engineer Captain

Barog was not able to find the other end of the tunnel. Frustrated he ahot himself

and his dog dead.After his suicide it was Baba Bhalku Ram of Chail, who with

his supernatural powers surveyed the track with a atick that helped Britishers to

undertake the task and find the other end of the tunnel.

Mr. H. S Harrington was the chief engineer who supervised the construction of

this railway track.

It was included in UNESCO's word heritage list on Jul 3, 2008.

Also featured in the Guinness Book of world records as it rises from kalka at 640

m from seed level to shimla at 2130 m marking the steepest ascend for this

distance.

Pathankot-Joginder Nagar narrow gauge (113 km)

Construction waa started in 1926 AD and it was opened for traffic on April 1,

1929.

There are 993 bridges & only two tunnels.

bridge in india.

It was built by British for transporting raw material to the shanan power house at

joginder nagar in Mandi.

Kangra is leading in H.P in producing silk.

There are 9 silk yarn reeling unit 3 each in kangra & Bilaspur.One each in Mandi,Una

and Hamirpur.

Horticulture

At present the middle zone is (1200-2400m) most developed fruit zone of the state.

Nearly 70% of fruit area and its production are found in this zone, in Mandi, Kullu,

Lahaul Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur together contribute 82% of orchards area and fruit

production.

The minimum area under horticulture is in Lahaul Spiti.

Apple cultivation was started ny captain R C Lee in 19th century in Kullu & Alexander

couts in Shimla region.

There is a fruit research station, first of its kind also known as “couts garden” at

Mashobra.

But British varieties could not get much favor in India as well as in foreign.

So in 1918 Samuel Evan Stokes introduced delicious verities of U.S.A. He selected

Kotgarh area for apple production.

state between the height of 300 feet and 400 feet.

In 2014 apple cultivation was reported successful in Hamirpur.

Organic cure for apple

The organic formulation made from cow urine, old lassi and Neem oil has proved

effective in keeping away not only the marssonina fungus but also a host of other

disease. It was developed by a farmer Gopal Mehta of Kotgarh in 2011. It consists

200 liter of cow urine, one litre Neem oil and soap nut solutions.

Peach

The peach bowl od Asia is Rajgarh,Sirmaur. The credit for inception and

introduction of peaches in Rajgarh mainly goes to late Dr.Y.S.Parmar. The

experimental peach orchards were planted by dept. Of Horticulture in 1955.

Olive :The olive cultivation in H.P was started with the technical assistance of ltalian

govt. In 1984.

Saffron:In H.P saffron cultivation has been giving encouraging result in Kinnaur district

since 1985-86.Now the cultivation is also taking place at Tabo(Spiti).

Almond: Varities:Dheber Badam, Telangi Selection, Riba Selection.

Pistachio:Its cultivation was started in 1958 seeds from lran, then in 2001 from

California were introduced

Kiwi Varieties: Allison, Monty, Abbot, Hayward, Brug.

In 1850 tea plantation was started at Kangra,Palampur, Baijnath, Bir and Sindhwar on

experimental basis.

In 1852 superintendent of Botanical garden Dr. Jamson set up Delhi Tea Estate.Which

was renamed Nishan Tea Estate.In 1866 major straut purchased Delhi Tea estate.

In 1866 kangra tea got gold medal in a tea auction function in London.

It was Dr. William Jameson,who had introduced the Chinese Green tea, had brought the

seeding from the kumaun hills to Nagrota and Bhawarna first.

H.P Horticulture produces marketing and process corp. Ltd (HPMC) was set up in June

1974.

CAREER POINT SHIMLA Came into being in 1984.

The main objective of this organization was to provide a forum to artists of Handicrafts

and handloom as well as primary co.operative societies in the state.

Nearly 253 primary co-opwrative societies of the artisan craftsmen and weavers spread

across the state are its members.

As many as 89 of these are organized and managed by women.

These societies are engaged in manufacturing ladies and gents’ shawls

(Woolen,Angora,Pashminas),mufflers, stoles, jackets,long coat, pattu, classic Tibetan

carpets,leather sandals etc.

Himbunkar:facilitates the member societies by providing raw material improved designs,

modernized tools,appliances, technical know-how as well latest trends and techniques. It also

help in undertaking marketing of their handloom and handicrafts participating various state

and national level exhibitions and fairs
