Eco Educator
Part Time Contract
East Scarborough Storefront, a project of Tides Canada Initiatives, is a unique approach to community development; we leverage the power of collaboration to support people and build community. Storefront staff acts as a bridge, catalyst and facilitator between and among community members, services and resources.
The Position
To work with colleagues, partners, gardeners, resident leaders to help create awareness and develop plans that encourage Storefront staff and KGO residents to make responsible choices regarding environmental practices and responsibilities.
This position ensures East Scarborough Storefront has the knowledge and systems in place so that residents, partners and staff can work in as environmentally sustainable way as possible. Key focuses primarily on the knowledge and systems needed for the eco-food hub (commercial grade kitchen) and the Roots Of Scarborough East community garden
Responsibilities include:
Garden:
Work with gardeners to help develop garden plans for the season Order soil and other required materials for the season Organize garden meetings Develop a composting system and waste is composted regularly Use the composting system as a way to bring together the gardeners with
those working in the kitchen Develop processes and protocols for rainwater barrel use
Environmental Learning Opportunities:
Provide gardeners, residents, staff with appropriate educational materials about issues of conservation, preservation, and sustainability
Act as an advocate for residents in obtaining environmental goals Develop basic training modules for groups using Storefront facilities Work with staff incorporating green practices
Work with entrepreneurs incorporating green practices Keep accurate and comprehensive records of gardeners, training, statistics Provide written reports as required
Qualifications:
2 years’ experience working in a community and environmental justice setting Understanding environmental needs and issues in marginal communities A thorough understanding of community work, and a demonstrated ability to
apply an empathetic and holistic approach to assisting community members Able to create inclusive and non-judgmental environments Demonstrated ability to work with people from various backgrounds and in
various cultures and Ability to work independently and as a part of a team Comfort with group and workshop facilitation Excellent written and oral communication skills Strong computer proficiency; database skills are considered an asset A second language is considered an asset Flexibility to perform a wide variety of tasks

Part time contract 15 hours per week, April 2015 – Oct 2015, Monday to Friday, flexible schedule, occasional evening and weekend work required
