Creating a Graph of CO 2 data from Mauna Loa, Hawaii using Excel: 1. Go to Physical Science page on hmtcascience.wikispaces.com 2. Creating a Graph of CO2 data from Mauna Loa, Hawaii using Excel:

1. Go to Physical Science page on hmtcascience.wikispaces.com

2. Scroll down to “Climate Change, Carbon Dioxide and Other Greenhouse Gases”

3. Download “Raw Monthly CO2 Data Mauna Loa” text file from hmtcascience.wikispaces.com. If file open in webpage, right click in page and select “save as”. Save file on desktop or flashdrive.

4. Open Excel.

5. In Excel, left click “Office Button” circle in top left corner

6. Click open. “Look in” should be the location you saved the file. Make sure “Files of Type” says Text File.

7. Open file.

8. Click on “Delimited”. Then Next

9. Check “Space”. Then Next

10. Make sure “General” is checked. Then Next

11. Delete Row 1 by putting arrow over “1” and left click. Then right click and hit delete

12. Delete columns E, F, and G the same way as above (put arrow over “E” and left click).

13. Re-label columns as shown below

14. Hit Ctrl-F together. This will find a word a number. Click on replace tab. Type “ -99.99” in Find what and leave Replace with blank.

15. Click on “Replace All”. This removes this number (missing data from lab). Now it will look like this:

Now we will begin constructing the graph:

16. Click on “Insert” tab at top, then pick “Scatter”, then “Scatter with straight lines”

17. Right click inside newly create graph area. Click on “Select Data…”

18. (If there is any data already there click “Remove” until everything is gone)

20. In “Series Name” type “Average Monthly CO2 Concentration”

21. Click in “Series X values”. Then left click and hold, dragging all the way down column C from first to last data point

22. Click in “Series Y values” and delete whatever is there. Then left click and hold, dragging all the way down column D from first to last data point

24. Click on Dates on x-axis, then right click. Click on “Format Axis”

25. Axis options should look like this:

26. Click on Numbers for y-axis and right click. Click on “Format Axis”. Axis options should look like this:

27. Use the “Layout” tab at the top to complete your graph with axis labels and a better title. Stretch out the graph to be a larger size. In the end it should look something like this:

28. Add your name somewhere and print the graph.
