Did you experience any discomfort?

Confirmation Bias: I look for and find information that confirms what I already believe

Most people choose A and 4, because they can confirm the rule. However, it doesn’t really test the rule. What if the 7 has a vowel on the other side? Usually we look for things that confirm our beliefs rather than challenge our beliefs and see if we can disprove them.

Backfire Effect: Evidence against my belief makes me believe in it even more (not less)

Social Proof: I conform to the actions/beliefs of the majority, because they are probably right.

Fundamental Attribution Error: The mistakes of others show they are a bad person, but my

mistakes are understandable.

Rule of Six: To fight the F.A.E., I think of 6 possible explanations for a situation.

You’re driving to school and someone is tailgating (driving really close to) you.

1. How frustrating! What a jerk!

2. Maybe they have a new baby and it made them late to work.3. Maybe their uncle got into an accident and they are driving to the hospital.4. Maybe they haven’t noticed how close they are to you.5. Maybe they are a new driver and don’t know to give you more space.6. Maybe they are trying to read your awesome bumper sticker.

It doesn’t make tailgating ok, but it relieves my stress to remember that they are people just like me, and we all make

mistakes. Don’t take it personally!

You order a cheeseburger with no ketchup at McDonald’s. Your order arrives with lots of ketchup.

1. Idiots! They can’t even get one order right!

Work together to use the Rule of 6 for this situation!

Implicit Bias: I have a preference towards/against things without knowing I have it.
