As a highly creative person, Christy
Brain loves being able to chart her own
course. Realizing she wanted something
more meaningful than a retail “McJob,”
Christy began taking general studies
courses at Capilano University. When
she heard that the Bachelor of Arts in
Liberal Studies program allows students
to build their own degrees, she was sold.
“You get to come out with something
completely unique to you,” she says.
“The creativity that you’re allowed to
express in how you shape your degree is
amazing.” Christy followed her passion
for art history to create a final project
exploring the intersection of technology
with museum culture. Today, she is
working on an exhibit exploring Victorian
“Dandy” culture for the Roedde House
Museum in Vancouver’s West End,
timed to correspond with Pride Week.

LIBERAL STUDIES
2 | CAPILANO UNIVERSITY VIEWBOOK 2017-2018
How does the Liberal Studies program work?In the first two years, you take foundational courses in Arts and Sciences. In third and fourth year, you narrow your focus by exploring common themes—like community, power and sustainability —from multidisciplinary perspectives. You also begin one-on-one tutorials with faculty where you explore and refine a research question based on your educational interests and career aspirations. This question is the basis of your capstone project, an impressive portfolio piece to take with you when you graduate. capilanou.ca/lsba

Motion Picture Arts student Petie
Chalifoux is a born storyteller. A hoop
dancer since her teen years, the Woodland
Cree filmmaker says the progression
from telling stories through dance to
telling stories on screen was a natural
one. Petie entered Capilano University’s
Bachelor of Motion Picture Arts program
originally hoping the degree would help
her get work in on-set visual effects.
However, the screenwriting courses she
took grabbed her storyteller’s heart.
“With everything I’ve learned at Capilano,
I asked myself what I could do here,
today, that could make a shift in the
perception of Indigenous people,” Petie
says. Realizing she has important stories
to tell, Petie applied for and won Telefilm
Canada’s prestigious $120,000 Micro-
Budget Production Program grant to
make her first feature film, River of
Silence. Drawn from her own family’s
experience of losing her grandmother,
the film explores the difficult issue of
murdered and missing women in Canada.
Petie is also a graduate of Cap’s
Indigenous Independent Digital Film-
making diploma and certificate.

“Being part of the case competition

Saulo Ferreira came to Capilano University
from Brazil with a plan to earn a business
diploma in an English-speaking country.
However, after taking his first accounting
course, he fell in love with the subject
and decided to pursue a Bachelor of
Business Administration as the basis for
a CPA designation. Saulo was able to
apply his class learning in his role as
president of the Capilano U Marketing
Case Competition Association. He led
the senior team to victory at the 2016
Western Canadian Business Competition,
where he was named Best CEO and VP

Jennifer Ivings is passionate about
outdoor education for children. “I enjoy
the look on a child’s face when they
learn something,” Jennifer says. “When
they’re struggling to climb over a log,
they get a satisfied twinkle in their eyes
when they finally make it.” Starting out
in the diploma program, Jennifer has
continued into the Bachelor of Early
Childhood Care & Education. Her
practicum study took her to Scotland
to explore outdoor nature schools,
where she lived with the families of
children attending these adventure-
based schools. “When I look at my
future,” Jennifer says, “I feel Capilano
University has really set me up to be in
the field of education. I can see myself
being employed, being accepted to a PDP
program and being confident enough to
take on a master’s program.”

Jamie Ferguson has always been an
outdoor adventure enthusiast. So
enrolling in Capilano University’s
Outdoor Recreation Management
diploma straight out of high school
was a natural step. After completing
the diploma and working as a kayak
instructor, Jamie realized he wanted a
less seasonally-dependent career. He
returned to Capilano U, laddering his
diploma into the four-year Tourism
Management degree. During his first
year in the program, Jamie studied
abroad at the University of Hawai’i,
where a course in destination marketing
piqued his interest. “I really enjoy
promoting places that I love—like Victoria,
Vancouver, Whistler and Canada—to
the world,” Jamie says. “I realized I could
do this in B.C.” As part of the degree’s
hands-on learning focus, Jamie chose
a destination marketing mentor at
Tourism Vancouver. Today, Jamie
works in the travel trade department
of Tourism Victoria.

Success in university diploma, degree or post-graduate course work requires strong reading, writing, listening and speaking
skills, as well as excellent presentation skills, research and citing competency. Together these skills help students to participate
actively in class, work in teams and research, prepare and present excellent assignments. The English for Academic Purposes
(EAP) department offers multiple EAP levels and a selection of pathway or combined skills program options that transition
second language students to university with ease.
